Stormers must stand up
13 Apr 2006
Nick Mallett wants the Stormers “to show what they are made of” when they play the Chiefs in the Vodacom Super 14 on Saturday.
The WP director of rugby was a guest on New Zealand rugby show Re:Union and had to sit through the highlights of the Stormers’ defeat to the Blues in Auckland.
“Our individual skills and indiscipline let us down badly, and the guys were very disappointed,” said Mallett afterwards. “It wasn’t a great game of rugby, in fact it was probably our worst performance of the season. We conceded two soft tries at the end. De Wet Barry also knocked on when we could have counter-attacked, while we won a tighthead and then turned the ball over.”
Mallett said the yellow card picked up by Barry for a reckless shoulder charge was “inexcusable” and that he expected better from a captain.
He also lamented the fact that the Cape franchise had yet to field their best loose forwards at the same time.
“To lose Joe van Niekerk just before the Blues game was a big blow, as was Luke Watson’s [facial] injury. Our ideal loose trio would be Van Niekerk, Watson and Schalk Burger. Hopefully they’ll get to play together before the end of the season!”
The former Bok coach admitted that Saturday’s game against the Chiefs was a vital one for his side.
“It’s time for the guys to show what they are made of,” he said.

Keo,
I have to congradulate you on successfully distance Mallet from this failure, I wonder if the Stormers played much better this season if you still would have left Mallet out of that success story, no I think all the success would have gone to the saviour of WP rugby and the worldclass rugby guru Nick Mallet, and the current coach would probably be mentioned as a second thought.
Mallet is the big guy in WP and he is also responsible for this mess, show us you are fair, I am looking forward to that article, and please don’t come with the French non coaching clause nonsense, not even you believe that one seriously, something like that is on paper but in the real world it means nothing, Mallet is with the team all the time, he sees them daily.
This is the worst situation WP rugby has found it self in ever, at all levels of the game.
At least last year and before when Carel and Gert coached WP they played entertaining rugby, although very inconsistant, at least it was a shock when they lost against a side like Freestate, now its expected, how crazy is that.
There is more wrong with WP rugby than just the Stormers, but it seems you focus only on Kobus to take attention away from Mallet.

i think keo is doing mallet’s dirty work the way he’s criticising kobus. it was mallet’s decision to appoint kobus as w.p. coach, so surely mallet is also to blame.

R20 MILLION for this garbage! I say the players should have clauses in their contracts….lose 3 in a row and you forefeit a weeks wages…..these guys obviously need some incentive to win…pride and glory are just not enough of a motivation factor for their lazy arses!
14 Apr 2006, 04:06 am
Mallett must stand up and face da music.
14 Apr 2006, 06:00 am
Nick Mallet should make a RAP ALBUM…..

14 Apr 2006, 07:16 am
my advice to nick is to shut up and let your team do the talking on the pitch.
14 Apr 2006, 08:25 am
Stormers, listen carefully to what Nick said.
He said stand up.
Not bend over.
14 Apr 2006, 11:33 am

The big problem is no one know and no is prepared to tell us how involved Mallet is in this side, the job descirptions are just a load of ****.
THE WHOLE RUGBY SYSTEM IN THIS COUNTRY IS NOW IN CRISIS. Apart mabey from JW and what he manages to do. And its **** because it leaves you with zero confidence in the ability of the BOKKE
14 Apr 2006, 14:09 pm
cane there were as a kiwi league player called Jarrod McCracken
14 Apr 2006, 16:22 pm
When will they drop Steady Eddie then?
As long as the Stormers keep the dud in their front row, any talk about resurgence are just token
14 Apr 2006, 17:10 pm
It’s not JUST on top muppits, it’s inside.
14 Apr 2006, 18:11 pm
Nick Mallet is a waste of sperm.
14 Apr 2006, 19:58 pm
Hate to say it, but they need to do a little more than stand up. How about playing good rugga?! Theres a thought.
14 Apr 2006, 20:25 pm
Onlooker, probably as long as it will take White to drop a Tri Nations winner from his squad. Why not call for De Wet to be dropped, why do you always dofor the non-white. Racist.
14 Apr 2006, 21:51 pm
mikeybrass
Kindly note that De Wet Barry is ALSO a winner of the Tri Nations in 2004!
Barry does the dirty job necessary to keep fast, skilled backs at bay, Andrews only gets time and again a good look down his own shaft every single scrum and otherwise nothing
15 Apr 2006, 07:20 am
The Stormers are in big trouble (again). Weak defense in the back triangle will cost them dearly.
Mallet should take part of the blame. He is supposed to oversee coaching strategies. Kobus has blown his chances. He’ll be back in the Vodacom competition next year.
16 Apr 2006, 04:55 am
Now Nick Mallett KNOWS what the Stormers are made of.
Candy floss and rice-paper.
