Cool hand Louis’ comeback

Flyhalf Louis Strydom is one of seven changes to the Valke team to play the Vodacom Blue Bulls in Brakpan on Friday night.

Strydom was absent from the Valke’s last match against the Sharks after cutting his hand while washing dishes at home. His tactical awareness and educated boot were sorely missed as the Valke crashed to a 46-17 defeat.

“Louis makes a big difference to us,” coach John Williams told keo.co.za. “His return enables us to pick Riaan Viljoen at his more accustomed position of fullback.” Viljoen struggled at flyhalf in the last match.

Mpho Matsaung will play in the No 11 jersey after deputising for Viljoen at fullback two weeks ago. The other changes in the backline see Brendon April back at right wing, while Hanno Coetzee slots in at inside centre.

Up front Piet Grobler takes over at hooker from Frik Venter. Venter is relegated to the bench. Zane Kilian starts in the No 1 jersey with Gavin Whittingham also dropping to the reserves.

“It is great to welcome back Brendon April and Hanno Coetzee. The break came at just the right time for them. I think we are all feeling good after a nice rest.”

Williams is wary of the wounded Bulls, but prefers to focus on his own team and not on the opposition. “I’m looking forward to playing at home. We are fit and ready and I’m pleased with how the practices have gone this week. We have worked on a few things and I believe we have ironed out some of our problems.”

In the first round of the Absa Currie Cup the Valke came within a whisker of big upset, eventually going down 18-16 to the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld. On Friday it is doubtful they will come as close, but as the Lions showed again on the weekend, the Bulls are far from unbeatable.

Valke team to play the Blue Bulls: 15 Riaan Viljoen, 14 Brendan April, 13 Riaan Hefer, 12 Hanno Coetzee, 11 Mpho Matsaung, 10 Louis Strydom, 9 Sarel Pretorius; 8 Michael Vermaak, 7 Jacques Nieuwenhuis, 6 Piet Krause (captain), 5 Nico Luus, 4 Ryan Strudwick, 3 Philip Lemmer, 2 Piet Grobler, 1 Zane Kilian.
Replacements: 16 Frik Venter, 17 Attie Pienaar, 18 Gavin Whittingham, 19 Sean Plaatjies, 20 Morne Adams, 21 Bosman Grobler, 22 Dean Okkers.

    Thanks Andrew.

So he is not a youngster at all.

With Pedrie and Hougaard back, it will take an almighty effort by the Valke.

    But not impossible.

Lobberts and Trompie also pulled up with injuries, anyone have the latest on them?
