Valke prop speared by Saru
20 Sep 2006
Valke tighthead Philip Lemmer will take no further part in this year’s Absa Currie Cup after being found guilty of dangerous play.
The big No 3 was sent off in the match against Vodacom Western Province for a spear tackle on centre Corne Uys. A South African Rugby Union disciplinary committee has since handed him a three-match suspension as punishment.
This means that Lemmer will miss the Valke’s last two Currie Cup games against the Pumas and the Sharks, as well as the first match of next season.
Uys suffered an injury as a consequence of this tackle, but word from the WP camp is that he should be alright for the match against the Lions at Ellis Park this weekend.

a three match suspension for a spear tackle is rediculous. why not just make him sit in the corner for five minutes?
it pains me to say this: rugby should have a good look at the nrl’s disciplinary process.

What is the definition of a spear tackle, and when is it legal or not?
I have seen players put in tackles where the player tackled is lifted off his feet and falls to the ground with his feet and legs doing wheelspins to try regain balance. Play goes on as he was not driven into the ground. He still lands very awkwardly, either on back, shoulder or elbow. This seems to be allowed.
Only when the player is driven up and back and lands on his shoulder or neck area is this deemed dangerous or Spear.
Don’t tell me a tackler half way through a tackle decides it has become a spear and lets the other player down gently. When a tackled player is airbound, both the tackler and the tackled have very little control of how they land.
At school the refs are taught that it is not a spear tackle if the player is let down gently.
I have seen certain schools that target the spear tackle as a attacking weapon. the poor boys watching **** themselves that they will be next.
A good hard tackle is spectacular, especially against your opposition.

easy solution; don’t pick a player up in a tackle. you can still tackle a player back spectacularly without picking him up. the fact is once you pick up a player in a tackle, you don’t have much control any more.
again, this is where the nrl is way ahead of rugby; they classify it as a dangerous throw and then it is further classified in terms of danger.

nrl also stipulates clearly that if tackler lifts a player past the horizontal it is a speartackle. If he carries on and drive the guy into the ground he is gone for a loooong time.

it is up to the referee to determine what constitues a dangerous tackle
tackling aboce the shoulder is not allowed whether it is dangerous or not is irrelevent for punishnent and must be penalised
the referee can decide on the extent of the danger of a tackle and is not limited
on saturday barrit the sharks centre obtained concussion as a result of being hammered by his opponent without the ball
some touch judges are not doing enough to help the referee
some refs even allow slinging and the ref pus the player should be red carded
Have your say
