The Cats Vodacom Super 14 franchise will be known as the Lions from next season.
Of course, there’s a very good chance that the Lions franchise will have to wait until 2008 to make their Super 14 debut after the Spears were readmitted to the competition by the Cape High court.
In any event, the Lions’ Absa Currie Cup team will now be known as the GOLDEN Lions (the “Golden” was dropped by the union a few years ago) in order to distinguish it from the regional franchise that includes the Leopards and Pumas.
This follows the example set by three other South African regions: Bulls (Blue Bulls in the Currie Cup), Cheetahs (Free State Cheetahs) and Sharks (Natal Sharks).
The Lions plan to have a new logo for their Super 14 side and have asked the public to vote. Keo.co.za’s Muppits can vote on the site in the regular poll section.
