Injuries rock Cheetahs

The Cheetahs’ semi-final victory against the Sharks was marred by injuries to three key players.

Flyhalf Willem de Waal, centre JW Jonker and wing Gavin Passons all left the field injured and could miss the final against the Bulls.

“They all have a 50/50 chance of playing next weekend,” said coach Rassie Erasmus. “Losing them today disrupted our backline quite a lot and that’s probably why we had such a tough second half.”

Erasmus has able replacements in Meyer Bosman, Gaffie du Toit and Eddie Fredericks, but will be hoping for as little disruption as possible to his starting XV.

The Cheetahs will meet the Bulls in a Currie Cup final for the third consecutive season, and Erasmus is expecting another brutal clash.

“The Bulls are firing at the right time and we won’t be able to relax against them [like we did in the second half today],” he said. “We haven’t really thought about what surprises we’ll have in store for them – the preparation will only start tomorrow [Sunday].”

Cheetahs captain Ollie le Roux said home ground advantage would play a major role next weekend.

“We’ll have a sea of orange flags here for the final, which will give us a huge boost,” he said. “It’s great to be in the final and we’re 80 minutes away from another Currie Cup title. This is what you play for … the chance to showcase your talents in a big game in front of the whole country.”

Meanwhile, Sharks captain Warren Britz was at a loss to explain his side’s eighth consecutive defeat to the Cheetahs.

“If I knew what was wrong, then we wouldn’t have lost today,” he said. “The Cheetahs are a very good, structured side. We were half asleep in the first half and to trail 24-0 was devastating.”

Rassie is ‘n uitgeslape afrigter.

Whoopie! Made it again and at home this time. Well if it is the best two teams in the final, then the Bulls are the form team of the two.

But hey, you have to be in it to win it and at worst it is a 50/50 chance.

Go the Cheetahs and lets hope for a great final.

    Hmmm,
Must say that I wonder what would have happened in this match if it was played before the WP/Bulls match.
The way Fortuin blew the Sharks out of the match in the first half seems to reek somewhat of bitterness. After all, the Cheetahs are the rest of the countries ‘second team’ and guess that the WP match trio were not exceptions to this.
Listened on RSG and all the comentators could say was “Penalty Cheetahs” – no explanation given by Fortuin or anything that the commentators could add either. They were even dumbfounded at some of Fortuin’s decisions – and one knows who they were supporting!

Congrats to the Cheetahs for your win, not holding anything against you guys just do us proud.

Well done cheetahs, you played a much better game and never allowed the sharks any room.
But I must comment on the referee – it was at times appalling to watch and an embarrassment to SA. I just know that JC will never be able to referee an international match – he has to get past the international referee approval system and fortunately they do not make allowance for AA and below mediocre performance. SA needs to very cautious about how they run this program as it may end up affecting our game in the end.

However you cannot blame the cheetahs as they, like any team, will according to the way the referee blows on the day – unfortunately the sharks did not!

No more scheduled stops. 2 already. Kimi only 3 secs behind Button and fighting. 4th is the best he could do as the leading 3 are too far ahead.

Jinx hasn’t had a good weekend. I really can’t sympathise about Schumacher though! Alonso 10 points ahead and only one to go. All he needs to do is finish in a place.

    Hey David

How are my brother this morning?

I was thinking throughout the night, but we didn’t do the basics right…forward domination lacking, halfbacks very ordinary and Luke buckling under the responsibility of the captaincy….it seems.

I must say that I was dissapointed with the off the ball play by the Sharks. Expected a lot more!
