Injuries rock Cheetahs

The Cheetahs’ semi-final victory against the Sharks was marred by injuries to three key players.

Flyhalf Willem de Waal, centre JW Jonker and wing Gavin Passons all left the field injured and could miss the final against the Bulls.

“They all have a 50/50 chance of playing next weekend,” said coach Rassie Erasmus. “Losing them today disrupted our backline quite a lot and that’s probably why we had such a tough second half.”

Erasmus has able replacements in Meyer Bosman, Gaffie du Toit and Eddie Fredericks, but will be hoping for as little disruption as possible to his starting XV.

The Cheetahs will meet the Bulls in a Currie Cup final for the third consecutive season, and Erasmus is expecting another brutal clash.

“The Bulls are firing at the right time and we won’t be able to relax against them [like we did in the second half today],” he said. “We haven’t really thought about what surprises we’ll have in store for them – the preparation will only start tomorrow [Sunday].”

Cheetahs captain Ollie le Roux said home ground advantage would play a major role next weekend.

“We’ll have a sea of orange flags here for the final, which will give us a huge boost,” he said. “It’s great to be in the final and we’re 80 minutes away from another Currie Cup title. This is what you play for … the chance to showcase your talents in a big game in front of the whole country.”

Meanwhile, Sharks captain Warren Britz was at a loss to explain his side’s eighth consecutive defeat to the Cheetahs.

“If I knew what was wrong, then we wouldn’t have lost today,” he said. “The Cheetahs are a very good, structured side. We were half asleep in the first half and to trail 24-0 was devastating.”

If AJ doesn’t sign a new contract with the Sharks for the S14 I reckon they’re in major trouble. They are the one franchise who don’t have a smaller union partner to draw on. The Sharks CC squad is the same as the S14 one which is nowhere near S14 standard at the moment.
At least the Stormers can draw from Boland and even then they’re looking a bit vulnerable.

No doubt, the Cheetahs were playing out of their skin that first 30 minutes…Catfish said that their tight five were awesome and overwhelming during that spell, and the ref didn’t have much to do with it then.

    Piterman
It wasn’t just the Cheetahs tight five. Their loosies took the Sharks to the cleaners as well.
If they can play like that for 80 minutes an S14 home semi is a distinct possibility.

The ref had everything to do with it, he and that incompetant flag carrier patrolling the sidelines, we are talking CC 2006 right?

Yo Pieterman it must suck being in a country where rugby only raises peoples eyes in confusion. The Germans would make an awesome rugger team though if they tried, they big fellas, I am trying to imagine a Scandinavian rugby team would be a force to be reckined with…

One thing great to see is that 6 teams came to the Currie cup party, and rugby is looking strong in SA, the coasty teams are young and have a bright future, the Cheetahs and Bulls are still klapping it and the Lions followed by the upcoming Griquas was semi-promising…good CC this year :)

    Finmaster
I suppose I’d better confirm your worst fears.
It is a barely disguised secret in Pretoria that the Bulls paid Fortuin and the officials a massive amount of money to ensure the Sharks lost. They did this as they’re terrified of meeting the Sharks at Loftus due to their loss there earlier in the season.
The Bulls actually acknowledge that the Sharks are the best team in the country and will do anything to avoid playing them at Loftus.

Luke Watson should do the honourable thing and withdraw himself from competitive rugby… when he does so, he can thank Keo for keeping his dreams alive even in the face of such glaring deficiencies…
A bad attitude can only take you so far, Puke has reached his ceiling. If he wants to go any further, he’ll have to grow another 6 inches taller (to offer something in the lineouts), become a lot quicker (to arrive at the breakdowns before the locks), become tougher (to compete for the ball on the ground) and of course, he’ll need to lose that attitude

finm, ek was baie skrikkerig voor gister se game teen die Sharks en ja, die Bulle was gister weer goed gewees, MAAR twee dinge – hulle moet eers op Bloem kom wen EN tweedens – ‘n finaal is ‘n totaal ander game…

John, I’m not a Luke fan at all, but you have to give the guy some credit for his play. For a 22-year old he’s shown a lot of maturity and I wont complain if JW picks him in the nr.6 jersey for the Boks.

The amount of players Rassie removed and brought back during the game, I’m surprised he has any players left!

His games are getting a bit much now and he aint going to get away with it in the super 14. I mean at one stage it looked like Ryno van der Merwe was getting a ******* facial! All the medical official was doing was moving the sweat around his face and giving tactics!

  • 186.kevin w: Reply to this comment

John – it was a bad attitude that saw James Small be the only player to contain Lomu in ’95.

Attitude is good, Jake should leave his schoolteacher way of thinking behind. Luke is a quality player and i’ll thake the opinions of Stransky, Mallett, Mexted, Naas and the like over yours and Jakes!

I the Cheetah’s game again, and I must agree, that some of the decisions were not flash! Akkers shouldn’t have got a card, but the Sharks did shoot themselves in the “Fin” and I believe the Cheetah’s would have won the game anyway. They were more focussed on what they wanted to do, and their intensity in the first half was phenomenal

The Blue Bulls are already talking of a grudge match, which could backfire badly. The Cheetah’s discipline was good, and some BB players revenge means only one thing, try and maim your opponent

  • 197.Muskadel: Reply to this comment

    EvaC..

  • 199.farmer: Reply to this comment

The ref’s of both games were influenced by the home crowd’s.
They were not up to it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 200.evaCheetah: Reply to this comment
