Steyn poised for national selection

Luke Watson still won’t make the Springbok squad for the Ireland and English tests, but the national selectors will blood several in-form Currie Cup players.

The form of Pierre Spies gives White an escape not to pick Watson, although Spies has been devastating as a No 8 in the Absa Currie Cup and not as an open-side option. Watson, consistently, has been the best open-side flanker in the country, through the Super 14 and the Currie Cup. He was very good playing in a beaten pack in Western Province’s semi-final defeat and newspaper reports that played off his performance against that of Spies were outrageous. One played openside flank in a pack whose tight five got murdered. The other played No 8 in a pack that marched relentlessly to a final.

Most independent observers would laud the possibility of Watson playing as open-sider, Spies playing at No 8 and Juan Smith completing the loose-trio. For those who still argue that Watson misses out because there are better, don’t kid yourself. Watson misses out because White does not rate him and never will.

White this weekend told the Sunday newspapers, English and Afrikaans, that for the first time his focus was on winning the World Cup and not the next test. Let’s hope the national coach can maintain this supposed belief on tour. He mentioned a similar thing prior to the Tri Nations. Then the Boks got hammered by France and White feared for his job. His reaction was to stick with the same players who failed him the year before.

Injuries forced him to introduce younger players and Spies was one of those to benefit with two outstanding home tests against New Zealand and Australia. But before we get too carried away, look at the impact of Spies at No 8 in his test debut. Yeah, there was no impact because there was nothing happening among the tight five.

To beat Ireland and to get at least one win out of two against England will require a tight five that is dominant and not just competitive. The loosies in the northern hemisphere will only ever be as good as their tight five. And White and his selectors will have to think carefully about who goes and stays in that department.

Rudolf Straeuli also opted for a young tight five in 2002 to play France, Scotland and England. Deon Carstens, Bakkies Botha and Wessel Roux were all the stars of the domestic competition. They got smashed by teams, whose tight five were well versed in technique.

It will require a mix and match in selection if White is to succeed where all Bok teams have failed since 1997.

Taking younger loose-forwards and backs is to be applauded, but the wiser and more battle-hardened souls are the non negotiables among the pack.

Speculation, based on White having a banter with the Sunday newspapers, include the selection of Francois Steyn as a utility back, potentially Brad Barritt and Jaco Pretorius as a second string midfield combination and the injection of youth in Hilton Lobberts and Kabamba Floors. Chiliboy Ralepelle will again tour, despite the Bulls selectors rating him third, at best, in their current senior set-up – a rating I fully agree with when you consider the quality of Botha and replacement hooker Strauss.

White will not select overseas-based players like Cobus Visagie, although there is a very strong case to be made for Visagie, given he has given all the English props a torrid time in the last two seasons, while French-based Shaun Sowerby would be a ‘horses for courses’ selection.

White will continue to pick John Smit as his first choice hooker and captain, but Os du Randt and Percy Montgomery will be rested. There is also talk that White will ‘rest’ his best outside back in the last two tests in Breyton Paulse. Just why only the selectors would know because Paulse has played very few matches this year and has ended his overseas commitments with Clermont two months ago.

With Montgomery out, White can choose between Bevin Fortuin, JP Pietersen and Steyn, but it seems Johan Roets is very much in the Watson mould. Regardless of what he does, he won’t make the team.

Of the contracted Boks who SARU will be paying until the end of 2007, Hanyani Shimange, Eddie Andrews, Jaco van der Westhuyzen, Marius Joubert and De Wet Barry are unlikely to tour, while a decision has to be made on Jacques Cronje and Victor Matfield.

Joe van Niekerk, who has not had any rugby since the away leg of the Tri Nations, is also unclear about his tour involvement. Van Niekerk hurt his neck in August and it would be wiser to give him an additional month to make a complete recovery.

White’s biggest selection headache comes at lock. Matfield is the best contesting lineout in the world and Bakkies Botha is the best foil in a partnership to Matfield. Without Botha and Matfield, the likes of Johann Muller, Albert van den Berg and Danie Rossouw aren’t as imposing a prospect.

If you look at the two teams that will contest the Currie Cup final, the majority of the players are unlikely to feature in the touring squad. Of the Free Staters, Fortuin is the only probable backline inclusion, with Floors and Jannie du Plessis candidates among the pack. Among the Bulls, Ndungane and Wynand Olivier will probably tour, while Spies, Lobberts, Rossouw and Gary Botha should be in the national squad of 30. That’s less that 10 players out of the 30 coming from the two teams who have dominated the domestic competition.

The Bulls dont rate CR 3rd, they manage the youngster he is only 19 , very young for a frontrow.

Keo, get over your crush on Puke Watson. You watched a different game if you thought Luke was any good… he was poor, and not only because he was playing in a losing side. One of the primary reasons why WP lost can be found in the arrogant attitude of the short, slow watermelon farmer wearing the number 6. His captaincy is also poor. Stop punting Luke Watson as our saviour, the boy is (at best) our 4th choice opensider.

  • 7.Spies_Is_King: Reply to this comment

Out of 6 games, Spies has been man of the match 4 times. Only one of those he has played at no.8. So his form at no.6 has actually been more explosive than at no.8, no?

Why MUST the no.6 be a fetcher? New Zealand (the best team in the world) has a ball carrier no.6 (Jerry Collins) and a grand master fetcher at no.7 (Richie McCaw). Who ever said that the no.6 HAS to be a fetcher??? Spies can play no.6 as well (if not better) as no.8. So why is everyone calling for a fetcher no.6 when a fetcher no.7 does quite nicely for other quality sides? The rules of rugby state that no.1 – no.8 must be in the scrum. nowhere does it say that they have to play their designated positions. the loose trio can alternate scrum positions as often as they like! I say we keep Spies at no.6, Luke or someone at no.7, and Big Joe at no.8.

Floors, smaller than Watson, plays a much more gutsy, instinctive and quick game than Luke.

Luke Watson is rumour created by journalists who want to make themselves relevant to Jake.

  • 9.John: Reply to this comment

Keo, let go of your love affair with Luke, you are watching him as though he can do no wrong when in fact, he is not even close to ready for the big time.

Yesterday, he knocked on, missed tackles, made poor captaincy decisions and was beaten to the breakdown by a no.8. Also, even when the scrum swung his way, he was too slow off the mark to put any pressure of Heini Adams. Even on the ground, he lost out to the mongrel of Jaco Engels and Botha.

If anyone expects Jack White to change his “spots” , then keep on kidding yourself!!!The end of the year tour will be much the same we have come to expect of Jack White. He lacks the vision, innovation and lateral thinking to cure South African rugby from its chronic lethargy and stereotypical one-dimensional approach. He is a man in turmoil and is embroiled by his many insecurities. His script was only written for his first year. Not to pick Luke Watson is completely diabolical and it is only in South Africa where someone can get away with such a disservice to his nation!Does anyone doubt whether Luke Watson would make the All Black, Aussie or French team if he lived in those countries? Jack White is not kept accountable his actions. And we, the paying public, allow it!Welcome to South African rugby…so much potential but perpetual underachievers.

    Maak die Bulle almal Bokke!!!

  • 12.John: Reply to this comment

Luke makes many yards with ball in hand, but if you were to count the yards FORWARD, you’d see that he is not a ball carrier.

Luke also offers no options in the lineout. Yesterday we saw how Warren Britz did his duty as fetcher even when they were retreating. If Luke did even one thing well, I’d say we should give him a chance, but Floors is a better and quicker fetcher, Spies is a better ball carrier, Britz is better on the ground and even Wannenburg and Van Niekerk at least offer us something in the lineout. Get over it, Keo, you are alone in this little crusade.

  • 13.gothemullet: Reply to this comment

    Spies_is_king
The number on their back is irrelevant but you would certainly do better having your best fetcher on the openside of the scrum…which is 6 for SA and 7 for every other international team.

I agree tho that Spies is probably not a man I would sacrifice for a fetcher as he (so far in his short career) looks like your best ball carrier and line breaker for the future.

    Gambino,
Luke Watson would not make the 3rd team of Venezuela’s special needs league.

Do you seriously think he would lift George Smith and Richie McCaw? C’mon, not even the most die-hard watermelon farming, Province supporter would join you!

  • 15.John: Reply to this comment

Jake White may have made a few mistakes (like any other coach), but he is still the best we have and I grew in admiration when I saw how he refuses to allow a few ‘journalists’ to bully him into selecting their boy.

Kabamba is braver in the tackle.
Kabamba is smarter at the breakdown.
Kabamba is quicker off the mark
    Kabamba has superior distribution skills.
Kabamba has an eye for the gap.
Kabamba does not rate Brad Pitt as his favourite actor.
    Kabamba is a winner.
Kabamba does not cry about being ignored by Jake.
Kabamba takes his hits like a man.
Kabamba dishes out his hit like a man.
    Kabamba has mastered 7’s skills.
    Kabamda digs chicks.
Kabamba has not sucked up to Keo (hence no front cover appearance in Keo’s mag)
Kabamba does not drop the ball.
Kabamba has a CC gold medal.
Kabamba will win the CC again.
    Kabamba respects his dad.
Kabamba is a hero to millions of young kids.
Kabamba plays with a smile on his face, much the same as Ronaldihno.
Kabamba is not a disruption to his team.
    Kabamba respects his team mates.

Watson made WP lose. Don’t come to me with “he made a few tries” or “he stole a few balls”, because he literally did EVERYTHING. He does not give their potent backline a chance to run. How many times were their backline without momentum? Luke, YOUR A FETCHER.

He can learn from Kabamba and Ryno, who does what is required of them. Nothing more, nothing less.

Well sins i am in Harrismith i will have to support the Cheetha’s in the final. I think they are beter than the bulls this year. I believe they will beat the bulls at there own game.

Players that i would love to see in the EOYT is

    Floors
    Luke
    F Steyn
    G Botha
    B Barritt
    Spies will be there
    Bevin Fortuin

You might need to grow up a little – this whole sport (and blog for that matter) is about rugby and our opinions on the quality of the players!! Not the way a player looks or the distance he carries his arms from the side of his body.

My thoughts as well. Jake now says he’s concentrating on the WC and decides (if Keo’s correct) to waste time and money on youngsters who have, hopefully, no chance of playing in the WC.
Rather take players who are ready for selection and experienced.
Neither Barrit nor Steyn are genuine contenders until at least one or better 2 S14s.
Where’s Barend Pieterse, he’s one player who should be in the mix.

Talk about a misleading headline. The heads about Steyn but the article is about Luke with a passing reference to Steyn may go as a utility player.

Why Barrit should be preferred over Meyer Bosman is a bloody mystery. Bosman, at least, has the option of covering 10 as well as 12 and is a recognised kicker. Besides we have two 12s already unless Jake wants to experiment with JdeV at 10.

#80 macdaddy, good point about Province playing good rugby. If you speak to any Spanish football supporter, they’ll tell you they were more than happy to be knocked out of the World Cup whilst playing good football. They all say they’d rather play well and lose than play **** and win (like England in the group stages)

Your attitude makes the rest of the country who don’t support the Bulls shout even louder for the Cheetahs this weekend. You have no self respect. If you can’t be gracious in victory then you will be humbled in defeat this coming Saturday in Bloem. Sies jy’s vuil.

  • 103.macdaddy: Reply to this comment

sure thing andre but wp have the forwards to do the bizz.

brok(tighthead) is only 20,now if i recall a prop ONLY matures his playing pedigree in his late 20′s so give the youngster some time.

bolla….mmm abit of a hot head at times but you need that in a team.look at wp of 97 with small, the original hell raiser, probab the best wp side for many years, was were youth and experience was blended to form a solid unit.

wp’s playing style is high risk but the benefits far out weigh the negs bro.van der merwe at lock is a must for the future, would rather have partnered hi with gerrie in the engine room and given melck or the other van der merwe a start at flank but hey thats history.

kobus and the coaching staff will have to learn from there mistakes and luke aint in the boks for the touring party at year end….big wank!

who cares, the oke is the master of his own destiny and still at the age of only 22 has alot to learn.

the “youthfull exhuberance” has seemed more like a lack of direction and panic under pressure.
A team this young desperately needs an older, more experienced captain. One of the problems with youth is that it doesn’t know what it doesn’t know.
To rely on that direction from a precocious 22 year old is asking too much when pitted against genuine maturity and experience.

Very little happens unless Luke starts it. This doesn’t mean that I don’t rate Luke as an opensider. I think he’s the best we’ve got who’s role as captain is beginning to affect his game as a flanker and those around him.

I was going on personal observations not the press.
Have you noticed that Diacks game has deteriorated in direct proportion to Lukes expanded playmaker role over the last few games.
    I don’t think that’s a coincidence.

  • 157.PissAnt: Reply to this comment

    Luke will make the team.

Barrit and JP has shown absolutely nothing to suggest that they should be selected.

In Wynand and Jean (who had precious little game time this year through injury) we have enough cover at 12.

Preotius (Jaco) is a fair call to give MOssie a rest.

JP Pietersen has never impressed me – it is time to give Fortuin and Roets a go.

    Steyn…

Not too sure, seeing our depth at flyhalf I might consider him, but then again, Bosman is back (10 & 12 cover) and if you use consistency as a guideline, then De Waal and Hougaard (cant believe I said that) must surely be considered.

Hougaard is still very young, and has played well lately.

I am no big fan of De Waal, in fact, I still believe in some way he is only a good CC player.

But if you bring up a consistency argument to include the likes of Luke and Co, then surely Pietersen must be dropped and guys that have performed in the CC given a chance – and with that, not guys that ‘show promise’ but dont deliver.

On the by and by, congrats to the Bully boys, your team with that of the Cheetahs most definately looks a class above the rest, it will be a cracking final.

I’ve also wondered about that combination and it is a great option. If Schalks not fit it should be Floors/Watson. Both bring something different but wouldn’t upset the balance.
I’ve never been convinced about our loose trio combination. Even with Schalk they seemed to play more as 3 individuals than a unit.
Schalk was often criticised for isolating himself but where was his 7 or 8 support that should have been on his shoulder?

not sure steyn or barrit need selection, but jaco pretorius and johan roedts would be good selections.

bakkies will be missed more than matfield on the NH tour, but the most difficult to replace is Os. Agree that a hardy tight 5 is needed. I’d pick Ackerman and Rossouw for the 1st test with Muller as backup.

BJ Botha is a must at TH and will make a big difference to the bok scrum at twickenham. We need a grizzled prop to replace OS, but there are none, CJ should train at LH, his build and natural strength seem better suited to this position.

Finally if we are too test combinations, Gary Botha should be selected ahead of Smit who can be on the bench as cover for the frontrow.

    Tight 5 for EOY tour
    1. CJ 2. Botha 3. BJ
    4. Ackerman 5. Rossouw

    Bench: Muller, Smit

Philip Burger – Face it, even if he has an attitude he has electric pace, a good kicking boot and
he is not selfish. 14 tries in the CC and he has started in 4 games.

I did not say Barend should be ahead of Matfield, he must be his back-up.

AJ and Ryno – Both work like donkeys for their team and have leadership qualities. Discipline good.

ja might be spot on, was wondering the same thing, not the same player he was last year, Pieterse is perhaps the way forward, leading SA lineout oke in the S12/S14 for 2 successive seasons. Need some determined controlled aggro up there. Perhaps a Rossouw/Muller combo is ok?

  • 224.Simeon: Reply to this comment

I’m tired of people like Skim mking bullshit comments without backing them up. Here area few FACTS.

Barend Pieterse – leading lock for SA teams for 2 years in Super rugby.

Philip Burger – leading try scorer with 4 starts in the whole season.

Rayno vd Merwe – he puts his body on the line in every game for his province. None of Luke’s agro. We need more of his sort.

Go stick THAT up your arse.

226- in the super 14 when the bulls hammered the stormers jake asked where were luke and brits when the stormers really needed them. the springboks need guys who are goin to stand up and be counted against nz and france next year. not okes who can only put in big performances against the lesser teams like italy and canada

  • 232.sarky: Reply to this comment

Congratulations to the Bulls and Cheetahs.

Staying with the headline article, I would like to see Keo’s probable touring squad before next Wednesday.

On the assumption that not too many of the Bulls and Cheetahs members will get added to the Bok squad. Agreed, but then why should they be?

All we saw from the semis, was that Muir and van der Merwe are as unsettled in their selections and game plans as the Cheetahs and Bulls are committed to theirs. Muir, in particular, has flattered to deceive this year.

All of the 3 runners up, WP, Sharks and Lions can provide a strong ‘mid week’ squad that would contain most of the exciting youngsters as well as the ill used and under valued more experienced players. Unfortunately we still need that strong forward platform together with stable decision makers that can influence the game so the CC final and the Bok squads will provide these players from the Bulls and Cheetahs camps.

Mostly what can be learnt from this season is that strength versus strength is the only way to go. Outside of this, we will stay amongst the also rans of world rugby until we use squad capping and a draft system amongst the top eight teams.

  • 233.cab: Reply to this comment

yes sarky, agree with your assessment of the CC and strength-v-strength.

Muir’s youngsters have flattered to deceive a bit, but the side that has really come online is the Lions with: Ernst Joubert (Ig spot on here), Heinke Van der Merwe, Jaco Pretorius, and Ludik all looking good.

Derick Hougaart is as good as anyone of Francios Steyn , WdWaal… and has experience whats it with Jake to take greenhorns on nicely paid holidays?
Pedrie is another stalward who must prove himself over and over again, so is Wickus leave the youngsters to mature, they are not superhuman players, they dont run on air they are just unknown thats why they surprize the opponents for a while. The moment videos is studied by thier opponents they counter them with ease because of thier lack of experience.

    Look at our record
24 Oct 1999 Win: 44-21 Stade de France, Paris
17 Jun 2000 Win: 18-13 Loftus Versfeld, Pretoria
24 Jun 2000 Lose: 22-27 Free State Stadium,
    02 Dec 2000 Lose: 17-25 Twickenham, London
    24 Nov 2001 Lose: 9-29 Twickenham, London
    23 Nov 2002 Lose: 3-53 Twickenham, London
18 Oct 2003 Lose: 6-25 Subiaco Oval, Perth
    20 Nov 2004 Lose: 16-32 Twickenham, London

Lions: AP, JF, jaco P*, Ludick*, Ernst Joubert*, Heinke*, Baywatch*, Jano*
WP: Schalla, Schalk Brits*, Aplon*, Luke*, Diack*
Cheetahs: Juan, Os, Jannie dup*, kabamba*, Burger*, Barend Pieterse*,
Sharks: John Smit, BJ, Keegan Daniel*, Ruan Pienaar*, Johan Muller*

    * = Jong spelers/potensiaal wat binnekort ‘n kans sal kry. Moet hulself nog op ‘n hoer vlak bewys/ my nog nie oortuig nie.

This has absolutely nothing to do with this topic, but i have a question regarding Marius Jonker and the rules of Rugby.

Here goes: If a player goes down for an injury and is lying on the field, and play stops… Surely play cannot restart untill that player is attended to???
Adriaan Fondse was out cold before the Bulls scored yet another try. The conversion was successful by Liefling WHILE Adriaan Fondse was attended to by medical staff. Marius Jonker then let play RESTART while Fondse was still on the field being attended to by medical staff. This means the Bulls were 1 man down, and a try was scored against them by Bolla Conradie.

Do the rules not state that the injured player must be taken off or tended to, and that problem fixed, before play can be restarted???

This had no outcome on the result, but this was just one of the many errors I picked up on by Mr. Jonker while i was sitting in the comfort of the grandstand.

#267 As a neutral observer from New Zealand I have three observations. a) the refereeing was poor by international standards b) Luke Watson stood out and his slick skills and passing led to two of Provinces three tries and c) the atandard of rugby was rather poor. Although their were a couple of really good moves the error rate compared to the New Zealand semi-finals show that South African rugby is still lagging behind in skills

Personally, I do believe that the following combo, taking into account availability, quota and form, would be able to beat England two weekends in a row.

15 B. Fortuin/G. Aplon (depending on the weather conditions)
    14 P. Burger (what speed… i hate him though)
13 J. Fourie (comfortably our best 13 atm)
12 J. De Villiers (lets see how rusty he is)
11 B. Habana (work that step boy)
    10 A. Pretorious
    9 R. Pienaar
    8 P. Spies
    7 J. Smith
    6 K. Floors
5 V. Matfield (rest him alot though)
    4 D. Rossouw
    3 BJ. Botha
    2 J. Smit
    1 J. Engels

    16 C. Ralepelle
    17 J. Du Plessis
    18 B. Pieterse
    19 L. Watson
    20 F. Du Preez
    21 M. Bosman
    22 B. Paulse

23 O. Du Randt (for moral support)
    24 G. Botha
    25 J. Muller
    26 H. Lobberts
    27 H. Adams
    28 J. Pretorious
    29 F. Steyn
    30 G. Aplon/B. Fortuin

This is a potent team and no one can deny that fact. I’d like to see Jacques Fourie and Jean De Villiers continue to establish their midfield partnership, whilst Phillip Burger’s 14 tries mustbe rewarded. It must be noted how few people say he needs more experience before he is to be picked, whilst they say ‘they’ll reserve judgements on Aplon’ until the WP star plays in the annual S14. I believe Aplon and Fortuin are our best fullbacks at the moment, both combining safe hands with competent boots. Aplon also adds defensive solidity and blinding speed to the fray. On Pretorious at flyhalf, I still think he needs to work even more on his distribution and goal-kicking, as he seems to kill out of hand far too often. Ruan Pienaar should be encouraged to run off the ball as well, as his stepping and swerving have wreacked havoc at the highest level (think Brumbies 2005, Chiefs 2006). Pierre Spies, defensively, hasn’t quite lived up to the requirements for a superstar No. 8, but that is why I’m picking him there, because he is young and is more than capable of satisfying the role with experience. He needs to start specialising and I feel No. 8 is where he is best suited. Juan Smith is an automatic choice for blindside flank, but the same cannot be said of opensider Kabamba Floors. I’m concerned over whether Jake White would pick a forward under 100, let alone 90kg’s. Kabamba, at 175cm and 87kg ,is a good 19kg’s lighter than the second lightest forward in the pack (Spies). But I do believe what Floors adds is the game-breaking and fetching (not beer) ability. Imagine Spies and Floors, two looseforwards, linking up with natural flair players such as Pienaar, De Villiers, Burger and Aplon? This is an incredible combination! I’m too tired to talk about the tight 5, but I think these selections are more than justified!

Meyer Bosman on the bench… oh ya, well, I wanted a fly half come centre player, and Butch James doesnt do it for me. Meyer Bosman is also only 21, and I’m looking forward to watching him play against the Blue Bulls now that WDW is injured. His pass to put Jacques Fourie through against France last year was the best I’ve seen, and he did score the winner in the CC last year. He can be our flyhalf in 3 – 4 years time.

    WPW,

on saturday Luke knocked on (which led to a try), ran sideways (which allowed the defense to drift), offered no options in the lineout, was beaten to the breakdown by an 8th man and he did not even steal any quality ball for WP. This is a Luke’s usual standard, but somehow the media (read Keo), have latched on to him as the messiah of SA Rugby. Oh, and also Luke has a bad attitude, which is bound to cause problems with coaches and management in future (something which SA rugby should avoid at all cost)

    There’s a couple of things I noticed.

1.) The Bulls continously are offside in the backline.

Floors may be short, but he redeems himself by playing with suicidal guts. Luke has no redeeeming qualities as a player, he is short, slow, without the instinctive nous of great opensiders, without the strength to compete effectively on the ground…
Wannenburg may not be the greatest fetcher, but at least he offers something in the lineouts.
Van Niekerk may not be as strong as an ox, but at least he has pace and competes in lineouts.
Britz may be slow, but he puts himself in the right place at the right time.
Luke is, at best, our 5th choice opensider…

Its funny how , in the start of the CC everybody was mad about Watson. Now that Spies is there they hate him. You know why…because he is not a bull. To everybody that said Watson had a bad game, look at the game very closely:
Spies and Watson didn’t have many one on one confrontations but,
Spies bumped watson off once (1 point for him),
    Watson bumped spies off once,
TWICE watson stole the ball from spies, the one time he actually ripped the ball out of spies’ hands. The only critizism I have against him is that he tried to do too many on his own, but that usually happens when the rest of the team is not performing.

What is this obsession with Lineouts. There are what, 25-30 lineouts in a game? I’d expect my two locks to take 80% of those. and the rest between the 8th man at the back and maybe another loosie. So, why do you need a 120 lineout options? The New Zealanders have only a few options and keep it very simple and kick our asses every time.

Not only because he is a poor player, but also because he’d embarras us with the way he looks like he is suffering for some great cause everytime he (surprisingly) tackles someone. His body language reminds me of 9 year-olds who want to show the crowd how tough they are. We’l become the laughing stock of world rugby if Luke had to ever wear the green and gold.

Besides, he has already shown his disrespect for the culture and tradition of Bok rugby with that cover picture of him tearing the Province jersy to reveal a Bok jersey. Cheap publicity! When Bobby did that, he could at least rely on some substance. All Luke can rely on is Keo

although stats are all about individuals performance and don’t measure intangible benefits to your team,
like attitude or backing up, or being the dummy runner that made the gap that led to the try, or being the second guy at every tackle who slows the play down and prevents the opposition getting a break, etc…

  • 332.bluebarb: Reply to this comment

    RugbyStusent,
Lineouts provide the best first phase attacking options around, and the obsession as you call it is not based on winning your own lineouts. You are correct in saying that your locks should win them. But if you can steal or disrupt opposition lineouts, you create very dangerous attacking opportunities. that is where tall loosies in the AJ Venter and Spies mould come into their own and can swing matches. Look at what we did to the Auzzies in Oz last year. We took about 6 of their lineouts in a a row. It crushed their spirit, robbed them of posession and eventually lost them the game.

The obsession is not with Lineouts, its about posession.

And by the way, your petulance is kind of embarrassing.

Where have I heard this before? In SA’s obsession with having 5 lineout forwards, how many games have we won against the top opposition in the last 5 years? With these big okes, how many games have we won overseas?

  • 348.yoda: Reply to this comment

Francois Steyn is kak. What do you people see in the guy? He had ONE good game against wp in the rain. He was shocking on saturday. He couldnt handle the pressure. He should play ALOT more rugby before even considering the guy. If they want a guy who can kick the ball, pick de waal or derick. derick is also young(and already a bok, so he doesnt have to give out new caps), so if he is builing for the future, that doesnt qualify the guy over derick in any case. Jake goes on and on about not making the springbok jersey cheap, but then he gives it to undeserving guys, like bosman, tyibilika and now possibly steyn, while leaving guys like ettiene botha and watson in the dark. This doesnt make any sence…

Rugby Student, you are either illiterate or dumb or both…

We have gone through this already. why do you think Waugh says Watson is a good opensider? C’mon, think a bit, allow both brain cells to work together just for a second.

If we were to let Waugh pick our team for us, I hope they’ll allow John Smit to pick their team, C’mon, grow up. If Waugh’s comments is your reason for wanting to pick Watson, then I’ve had enough of arhuing with you… You have not provided any substance

  • 350.finmaster: Reply to this comment

Nobody is scared of the Bulls when an international referee handles the game. The Bulls’claim to fame is that they can beat SA opposition when SA refees are officiating. You only have to look at the past season of Super Rugby to realise this.
They won all their games against SA opposition and only 3/9 against international opposition. Surely this tells you something.? They are **** and SA referees feel they owe them something.

    Luke is a good player.
He looks very good at openside in SA but would stack up internationally.

SA doesn’t have a very good fetcher, but do you need one?

SA do have very good ball carriers, linebreakers and lineout players at #6,7 & 8… so why not play to your strengths and have 3 big tall linebreakers that support each other.
It worked in your last international game.

I agree with you about Botes and P3 (Botes is another player that can easily become a Bok).
They were brilliant in the S14. But Spies wasn’t that great in the S14. Maybe above average but thats it. He is a great player now though.
Oh, and of the players you mentioned, only 1 is a real fetcher.

Kobus this morning said that WP lacks in training skills and training facilities behind the Bulls , wie se skuld is dit.

and then please …. Povince played an inexperienced team 11 players first semi’s , well the Bulls had 9 first timers and a new coach.

I’m a little pissed off at the wp boys .. if they were not interested playing in the semies, they sould have stepped aside for the Lions. Some really pathetic ball handeling skills by province really made it allot easier for the bulls than it sould have been.

Well done to the bulls and cheetahs. It is a 50/50 final with the bulls going in as slight favourits I would say. I will however be supporting the cheetahs on the day.

    I know the Stormers won but Watson and Leo’o were fairly even;

    Leo’o 6 tackles, watson 10
    but Leo’o scored a try.

  • 364.bluebarb: Reply to this comment

again, I think we need a little balance here. Just because the Bulls won on Saturday does not mean that the Entire WP team was worthless. Luke is a great player. Is he as good as the hype surrounding him? i dont think anybody could be. Is he a great player who had an average game? Absolutely.

Even great teams lose games. Brilliant players have off days. And the next day the sun comes up anyway. If the Bulls lost the semi, would that make Spies a poephol? Clearly not.

WP had a great CC season and did very well. It bodes well for their S14 and CC next year. You chaps can keep your heads high, you never gave up and scored some sublime tries.

And so it continues. KEO are you not gettind a little obsessive? I I were Luke I would be getting a little nervous. What game were you watching on Saturday? Watson would make a pretty reasonable centre but that is where it stops. He made some silly mistakes with one resulting in a try for the Bulls. How can you beat a bulls pack if one of your players spends 80% of the time at outside centre? I stand to be corrected but he didnt turn over 1 ball and he did not put any pressure on Hougie. He doesnt do his job.
Congratulations Bulls and Cheetahs, you are the best two sides at present and deserve to contest the final. Beware the Sharks next year though.

Good Morning All – my head still hurts!!! It seems I swallow my words and predictions from Friday – got them both wrong!

Firstly – Well done to the Bulls and all their supporters on this site. It was a great win and no excuses from WP side. Bulls just did everything better on the day and deserve to be in the final.Province will be back next season no doubt.

Secondly – to all the bloggers who have nothing better than to trash Luke – shame on you – I always thought rugga was a 15 man game. Luke had an average game behind a pack that got mauled – why keep faulting his play – at least he keeps trying and introduces more creativity to the game than any other of the loosies out there at the moment. We should be encouraging creativity , not trashing it!

Thirdly – if WP were Kak, what the f… happened to the Sharks – they did not pitch for the game at all!! – very disappointing to say the least – It is a pity the Lions wre not playing instead – they would have done better I’m sure.

I really can’t see the Bulls taking this one.
Their great improvement is akin to the Boks “comeback” against 1 grossly over-rated team and another game against a team that couldn’t give a damn because they’d already won.
WP’s backline has too much firepower, and the Bulls will be starved for possession all day with Luke showing Spies how it’s done.

What I’m saying, Supa, is that they may thrill your socks off when playing an outfit like the (disinterested) Cheetahs, or the (blowing hot/cold) Sharks, but when they come up against a professional, world-class squad like WP, the illusion gets shattered.
No-one’s blaming them for being sub-standard, it’s just the harsh truth.

you are all full of **** dissing Watson in one breath saying he doesn’t add lineout options (why do you need 5 options anyway I don’t know?? FS didn’t lose out on the weekend with only 2!!!) and then punt Floors who is even smaller than Watson. We are really lucky in this country to have a load of loosie options but nobody does the work that Watson does in stealing and slowing ball.
    Loosie options for WC:
    - Spies
    - Watson
    - Burger (still need to see if he will be teh same player after the injury as he will never be able to fly in like he used to)
    - Smith
    - Big Joe

watson is the msot over rated player in south african rugby history
he is a good player, a very good player midn you. however he is not great. south africa is blessed with the amount of loose forwards we posses.
Floors is a far better option at 6. far better. watson thinks he is a distributing midfielder half the time…slotting into inside centre and trying to throw long passes or put people into gaps. he makes far less tackles, turns over far less ball, and covers far less metres around the paddock that kabamba.
    6. floors 7. smith 8. Spies
With burger to return to 6 when he is fully fit.
The best thing for south african rugby at the present time is to get over luke watson!! if jake picks him, great im sure he will do well…but i fully believe that their are much better flankers in the country!

I find it strange how no mention is made of Ryno vd Merwe. Week in week out the guy performs. He comes across as a hard grafter, doing the basics right and putting his body on the line every game. I’m not from the Free State, have always supported the Sharks (coz EP no longer feature!), but this guy does impress. He seems to actually play rugby with his head and has clearly learnt a lot under the guidance of Rassie.

Perhaps it’s because he doesn’t have much to say in the media, doesn’t highlight his hair, or doesn’t stick his tongue out to TV camera’s that he doesn’t make the grade and get more of a mention on rugby sites, but I do think he’d do extremely well in the bok mix. Imagine Spies, Burger, Smit etc being able to run wild, having a player like Ryno vd Merwe providing some control and rugby savvy from the base of the scrum.

Steyn is a much better fullback than JP…..

Reads the play better, faster, bigger, stronger, kicks much much better and has a better step….

The Sharks should really keep Steyn there…..and then Russell and Ndungane should complete the back 3…..

Sharks look 10 times better when Russell comes on to the field…..and that was evident in every game……however….**** seems to see him as only an impact player….

YES,THE BULLS ARE FINISHED,GONE,OUT,GOODBYE,THIS CC WILL SHOW,THEY ARE THE HAS BEENS OF S.A RUGBY..
    Comment by shark bok : July 24, 2006 @ 9:45 pm

I would just like to answer your question – with time all answers come.

Last year the bulls were finalists in al 5 divisions – amateur, women, 0/19, 0/21, senior. We won 3 out of 5 final.

This year we won the 0/18 craven week. Our women also have already won the cup. Our 0/19, 0/21, amateurs and senior team are in the finals again. Thus, 2 cups already and 4 finals to be played. So, to come back to your question, is the bulls era over?

Certainly not, the Bulls era – has just begun!

    Tony #391

Spot on… I think that combination has huge potential. I had my doubts with Sies at No 8, but he seems to have all the answers and could really develope into a really classical No 8, with the added bonus of speed. As Keo says ( I cant believe I am actually saying this), but provide a platform with a solid tight 5… and we may really have unrevelled a potent pack

On a separate note, I have really been unimpressed with the state of the CC this year, but I am not sure if I am the only one who picked this up, but the standard really moved up a notch this weekend

1 Free State were sublime, playing an expansive, attacking game with a really rampant pack. Why o why did it take them soooo long to adapt a game plan to the players they have at their disposal???

2 The Frikking Bulls even started thinking instead of playing theur usual “Moer en gaan duur/oor alles Stampcar” diatribe. I really think that Spies has a lot to do with their step up. A Bulls forward with a really good rugby brain… unexplored territory?? I just hope their new style of play doesnt confuse too much of their support!!

3 To me no disgrace in Province losing, based on the way they played, as well as how good the Bulls really were. 3 silly mistakes led to 3 tries… game over. I remain encouraged about the type of rugby they are trying to play and hope they build on the platform they have created

4 The Sharks… the only disappointment of the weekend. They were diabolical… nuff said

Maybe their is a glimmer of hope for the EOYT…

  • 478.Hmmm: Reply to this comment

Agreed 471…..WP scrummed the Bulls back in that scrum (so wp were going forward)…..Luke picked the ball up and the Spies tackled Watson and dislodged the ball…..JP ran through, picked the ball up and passed to Kuun for his second……

I really don’t think Luke had such a bad game. He stood out for WP, althought they played some ordinary rugby for 3/4 of the game. Luke is a good player. World class by any standard. He is a bit arrogant though, but he is definantly NOT a liability to any squad that utilises him. He is in the backline alot, yes, but he does good work when he is there. I mean, he set up two tries and almost scored one himself. Luke has stood out in just about every game he has played this season. People are just tired of hearing how good he really is.

  • 483.bluebarb: Reply to this comment

once again WP is let down by their refusal to face up to the fact that they HAVE to invest ina solid tight 5 and a decent Pivot. the last time WP featured in the CC was when they had a settled, decisive 10, and a strong, driving tight 5. their obsession with flashy rugby will cost them dearly if they dont have some decent backup.

its like having a car with huge KW but no torque.
it can do 300kph, but takes 25 min to get to 100kph…

BTW no matter how much talent young Steyn has, I dont see him having the correct temperament or decision making capabilities.

How many times did he kick possesion away when the SHarks were looking for tries?

Seems that this might be a prerequisite for Jake, if a guy kicks away possession he is in with a shot.

What i would like to hear is waht the selectors and Bok mangement plans are for this tour – are we growing our bok playing pool, are we going for a 3 out of three. Why not communicate the goals of the tour to the public……

And personally i don’t think Jake has the balls to think out of the box.

  • 491.finmaster: Reply to this comment

Lte’s assume that the two best teams in the competition made to the finals. (I still do not know how the Cheeters made it considering that their only asset is their coach))
If there is any justice and/or sanity left in this world Jonathan Kaplan should be officiating in the final. I can see Mondays headlines allready and it doesn’t look good to the Bulls.

Remember Schalks first year with about 50 yellow cards. Every one forgets that Spies has been involved in 2 years of S14/S12.

The whole WP wants Diack in the bok team, I say let him play S14 first ( he disapeared with “the Dentist” on saturday)

There is no point to pick a guy that has played 1 decent game for the Sharks against WP.( He was shocking against Bulls.)

    Congrats all Cheetahs fans!

I think we were pretty lucky not to concede more points against the Cheetahs…the way we played in the 1st half reminded me of a certain 63-6 drubbing by the Bulls in the early nineties… I wish the Boks could play like the Cheetahs – crisp, fast passing, good running on to the ball, very few handling errors, watertight defense & how refreshing to see a DISCIPLINED SA team for once! For the first time in my life I was embarrassed to be a Sharks fan with all the off-the-ball incidents. These guys are all pros & surely they know the consequence of their indisciplined actions??? I think it was a Cheetahs ploy to bait & wind-up the Sharks players, given their reputation. Very sneaky & ingenious, I must say…cause it certainly worked!

JC Fortuin was cr!p, but to place the blame on him for our defeat is taking it too far. His main problem seems to stem from his wanting to conduct the entire game – & his self-importance. This guy must never be allowed to referee international games, as he’s clearly not up to scratch. As for L. Manuels, he’s even more of an embarrassment. Clearly incompetent.

Looking ahead to the S14, I’m a little nervous for the Sharks. Yes we have the “ideal” draw, but if **** doesn’t sort the following out it could become the draw from hell:
    1) DISCIPLINE (has been shocking most of the season)
    2) Defense – esp in the backline. Sharks have leaked a number of soft tries…
    3) Handling (has not been up to scratch)
    4) Stop trying to mind games (this is for ****, cause he sucks at it!)

Also well done Blue Bulls on beating WP. Looking forward to watching the final as a neutral…

Francoise Steyn is an excellent prospect, as are Floors, Lobberts and Ralepelle. I’d give Steyn a run at flyhalf outside Pienaar. I’d also take Butch James to cover for flyhalf and inside centre. It’s pointless taking Paulse. Yes he did have an excellent game last time out, but was largely anonymous in the earlier games over the summer and is, quite frankly, too slow these days. Whatever happened to Shandre Frolick? He looked an absolute corker at full back until he got injured. If he’s fit, why not let him travel to acquaint himself with the squad…after all, in previous end-of-year tours there’s always been at least one fellow traveller.

AJ’s captaincy had a lot to do with the Sharks resurgence. calm, decisive leadership is what they need. they have hugely talented players, and a great coach. you have to accept that if you plsy high risk rugby that sometimes you will pay the price. I think they did great this season.

As did the Lions, it was a great CC and the top 5 teams can take huge pride in their efforts.

Quinny….but he did play better than JP in my opinion….

He read the play better (more in pos), he kicks loads better, he is faster, has a better step, etc…..

I think your back 3 should be Steyn, Odwa and Russell…..but if Butch is retiring then I would play Russell at 10 with Steyn as goal kicker fullback…..

Odwa, JP, Adi can then fight it out for the two wing pos……

But if Sharks start their S14 campain with a few home defeats (as could well be the case, seeing how they finished the season) they could struggle abroad. Winning in Australia/NZ will depend on them transferring some sort of home form over there, as well as momentum. Any sort of negativity & they will struggle.

Pretoria rugby fans who want to go to Bloemfontein for the Blue Bulls/Free State Cheetahs Currie Cup final on Saturday face disappointment. Only a small percentage of tickets have been allocated to the visiting team and its fans.

On top of that, hoteliers and guesthouse owners in the Free State capital say most accommodation has been booked already.

It’s the Bulls’ fifth consecutive Currie Cup final and rugby fever hit Pretoria hard at the weekend after the local team’s exciting 45-30 win over Western Province.

The championship match five days away has been billed as a grudge final – no one has forgotten that the Bulls agonisingly lost to the Cheetahs in 2005′s Cup final at Loftus Versfeld.

But Vodacom Park in Bloemfontein has a capacity of just 38 000
The atmosphere in town on Saturday night – in the pubs, in the streets, at the braais – was electric.

But Vodacom Park in Bloemfontein has a capacity of just 38 000 – much smaller than Loftus – making tickets difficult to come by.

Blue Bulls Rugby Union acting CEO Barend van Graan said local fans wanting to attend the final “should rather contact people they know in Bloemfontein and ask them to get tickets, than try and obtain tickets through us”.

“The Cheetahs will supply a small number of tickets to us, but these will be taken up by the families of the four teams playing there on the day, and by staff and clubs,” Van Graan said.

“We don’t know how many we will be given, but we would advise people to phone anyone you know in Bloemfontein to secure a ticket, as we are unlikely to have any for the public.”

‘We don’t know how many we will be given’
Bloemfontein guesthouse owner Johan de Waal said on Sunday night that requests for rooms have flooded in since Saturday.

“We’ve got problems; we don’t have enough rooms,” De Waal said. “We had people booked in for the game at the weekend and they immediately booked their rooms again for the coming weekend. We also had people after the game who came directly from the rugby to book rooms for next weekend.

“It’s the same everywhere… even people who come to Bloemfontein to visit family at the hospital, which is near us, are not finding accommodation.”

The Bulls will be sending a large contingent of players and officials to Bloemfontein as the province has no fewer than four teams contesting finals this weekend.

The women have already led the way in collecting the first silverware of the year by winning the national women’s rugby title – and the Blue Bulls Under-21 team will face the Lions in their age group final, while the Under-19 team face Western Province in their age-group final and the Bulls amateur side, who finished unbeaten in their pool games, face the Leopards.

All these games are also set to be played in the Free State capital, which faces an invasion of blue.

But the main focus is on the senior Bulls, who will be intent on setting the record straight against the Cheetahs.

On Sunday, Bulls coach Pote Human said: “I haven’t really had time to enjoy what we achieved on Saturday. I’m already worried about the final.

“We did very well but we haven’t won yet; we still have a very tough match on Saturday.

“If you think that five weeks ago we were almost out of the competition… now to be in a final; it’s wonderful and an indescribable feeling.”

The match is likely to capture the imagination of the entire country.

“We have accepted that the whole of Bloemfontein will be covered with orange and we will face not just the Cheetahs but the entire city.”

To all Bulls fans. I have cut this blog out to point out the mentallity of your supporters. This clearly illustrates the problem with all you DD. If someone has a personality, then suddenly he is kak? When will you guys get over the bright lights and big city syndrome. the world has changed, move with the times, their is another World outside of PTA. Seriously, you clowns need to get out more!!!

Keo Watson’s arrogance made him loose a lot of support including me, how many turnover did he make on Saturday , he’s playing way to loose thes days , he always standing at flyhalve , imagine having him and Victor together ???

No way WP can keep him, there are other loosies pushing as well Lobberts, Kabamba, Kuun their personalities are much better than Luke’s as well

    Quinny,

I only see positives coming out of Natal for the future! They are attracting a helluva lot of exciting youngsters just dying to get into the Sharks academy. My GLRU club side just lost our U19 Player of the year (17yr old Matric Prop/Hooker) to them and a Pirates U19 fly half that played for the regional side I am coaching has also been lured there. They are two of the most exciting youngsters I have seen for a while. There is great deal of Emphasis placed on developing young players in their academy and with the senior side already brimming with talented youngsters the incentive to play is great. I invisage the Sharks taking over from the Crusaders as the Super 14 power house for the next 5/6 years while the rest of the Unions are playing catch up with academies.
