Bulls butter-up Kaplan

The Vodacom Blue Bulls insist they have no problem with Jonathan Kaplan blowing the Absa Currie Cup final in Bloemfontein.

Kaplan was blamed by many in Bulls circles for costing them last year’s final at Loftus. While a number of his decisions were questioned after the game, it was his yellow card against Bryan Habana that received the most attention. The Cheetahs fought their way back into the game while the winger was off the field, going on to lift the trophy.

Predictably, however, the Bulls say they are pleased with Kaplan’s appointment for the rematch in Bloem.

Kaplan will be assisted along the touchlines by the two referees who handled the two semi-finals, Marius Jonker and JC Fortuin. Shaun Veldsman will be the TMO.

“Kaplan has been our referee only once this year [against the Pumas] and we spoke to him beforehand and have a good relationship with him,” Bulls coach Pote Human told the Pretoria News on Tuesday. “He is South Africa’s No 1 referee and we simply need to ensure our discipline is right on the day. After all, he can only ref what he sees on the field.”

Ek dink nie Kaplan gaan soveel voordeel blaas vir die Bloues soos Jonker laas week nie.

  • 6.ciccino: Reply to this comment

Kaplan was the third wors ref this season in front of Manuels and Roos. He was out of form and havily critisized though the whole S14, internationals and didn’t well in the CC. But his reputation won him final. In my view the best was that young ref if i’m correct his name was Jubert.

Naka played Kaplan like a violin. He’s biggest mistake last year was he should have sent off a Bull and a Cheetsa player early in the match.

He was inconsistent in sending off Habana but not the FS wing for the same offense.

He should stop Cheetsa’s from rotating props every ten minutes, like they did on Saturday again.

Kaplan was last years hero for Cheatahs. The cheatahs players kept telling kaplan what to do … he had no control over the game whatsoever and clearly was influenced by the cheatah players.

The bulls was on there way to another curriecup victory when sudenly kaplan started handing out yellow cards and penalties. Giving habana his first ever yellow card.

I hope Kaplan sorts out Jannie and Ollie – the 2 dirtiest players in SA rugby.

No doubt Ollie will be whinging about everything to Kaplan, pointing fingers all over the place. Rassie is very smart and has instructed his players to do that all the time, putting pressure on Kaplan to hand out yellow cards.

We will have to see if he falls for that again. Last year he did. This year I hope we can get a fair deal. A fair deal is all I am asking for.

  • 61.David: Reply to this comment

It’s rather sad that the only province that the rest of the country consistently complains about, regarding dirty play, is the one whose supporters consistently blame the ref for blowing them up.
To be honest, if the ref blew for every Bulls infringement for off the ball incidents the game would probably run another 40 mins overtime for stoppages.

  • 62.BlueBlood: Reply to this comment

The message SA Rugby is sending here is clear: the Cheetahs must win the CC again. It may be because they feel public interest will be lost if the Blue Bulls win the CC.

There is an even smaller chance of the Blue Bulls winning the CC now.

kaplan hates the Blue Bulls and he hates the Waratahs. Last year the Blue Bulls lost three games and all three were reffed by kaplan. What is the Waratahs record now ? 11 losses in 12 games reffed ?

kaplan was obviously bullied at school and he now sees the Blue Bulls as “bullies” and it is of course payback time. It is his way of getting revenge on the bullies who tormented him at school. It is a psycological problem and must be dealt with by a professional. These childhood issues must first be resolved before he can ref a game again.

Hopefully this year he will see the Cheetahs punching the Blue Bulls players from the first whistle, and not ignore it until a Blue Bull retaliates.

Hopefully this year he will take note of the oustretched arm of the linesman who saw jannie du plessis coming in from the side and punching a prone Blue Bull player. After a couple of minutes of being ignored by kaplan the linesman dropped his flag!

Hopefully this year a Blue Bulls player won’t get a yellow card for a legal tackle. I can just imagine kaplan thinking to himself “come on i’m itching to give a Blue Bulls player a yellow, wheres my chance? wheres my gap ? ahh theres Habana”

kaplan is 100% cheetah biased. Of this there is no doubt. Only if the Blue Bulls play their best game in the last 5 years could they win the CC, and even then it would take a lot of luck.

Bad news this for the BB.

I don’t think the complaint is so much about the odd retaliation, which shows a lack of discipline, but the cynical late tackles designed to inflict damage and the general foulplay around the rucks and mauls.
Delports pushing Aplons face hard into the ground could have resulted in a broken nose, and for what? Those are the things that sicken the other teams.
The best way to avoid the Cheetahs complaining to the ref is not to break the rules. If you do and get caught don’t blame the opposition and the ref.

I guess it is preference – personally I hate it when refs coach players.

Well I am not too worried about Kaplan this Saturday because I have been watching Gary Botha on the field. He communicates quite a lot with the ref and I don’t think he will be so nice just to stand back and take it. (If he is captain it has to be said).

What happened last year is history. The Currie Cup needs to be won again on Saturday. New year, new final and hopefully a new outcome!!!

  • 117.cane: Reply to this comment

    PA (post98).

“Kaplan is the best Ref in SA”

    correction.

He is the best in the World.

    -decisive.
    -lets game flow wherever possible.
    -Internationally, hugely admired.
-communicates with players concisely and clearly.
    -fit.
    -fair.
    -takes no nonsense.

    What more could you want?

  • 118.finmaster: Reply to this comment

As I have said even before knowing who’s going to handle the whistle, the Cheetahs, or any other SA team, haven’t got a chance unless we get international refs or Jonathan Kaplan.

It may make a couple of Bulls fans a bit hot under the collor, but the sad fact of the matter is that the SA refs are to scared to penalise the Bulls for the dirty mofo’s they are.

There is no need to explain this just go and watch ANY of their games (objectively) against all the bigger unions.

    *Punching
*Joining the ruck with a leading fist
*Joining the Ruck with a leading shoulder
    *Off the ball incidents:
-Watch their reactions after each and every Cheetah try 2 weeks ago
-Pushing players faces into the ground.
-Overrobust tackling after the ball has crossed the touchline…….
    The list goes on….

Having said that, I believe they can beat the Cheetahs, unfortunately Kaplan will have them playing with 14 men for large parts of the game.

I hope they clean up their act and keep it clean so I can waste my time with issues that really matter.

    Blouste,

Pleasure, but do not get too excited.

Pumas and Valke’s yellows are largely due to repeated infringements and slowing the ball down because they are outgunned so many times.

Sharks and the other big boys is more for professional fouls and off the ball stuff.

If it was not for JP Nel, the Bulls cards would have been 3…

talking about Gary ‘s captaincy I think he’s great. Who spotted that on Saturday when he got a penalty against them , he asked the ref, the ref said talk to your players , he then asked weather the ref will stop play while gary’s talking. ( learned from Boks vs Ir )

Spies kry bal waarmee pa wendrie druk
    Oct 09 2006 08:40:50:383PM – (SA)

    Morris Gilbert

For an entire year kaplan has been planning for this Saturday. He has concocted a masterplan to not only ensure a Blue Bulls loss, but also to be called a “legend” again afterwards.

The clueless wonder has already drawn up his blueprints for a blue defeat. This time next week he will be laughing somewhere in the bahamas about he has worked the “bullies” over again.

How did this happen ? How did it come about ? There must be things happening behind the curtain.
