Bulls butter-up Kaplan

The Vodacom Blue Bulls insist they have no problem with Jonathan Kaplan blowing the Absa Currie Cup final in Bloemfontein.

Kaplan was blamed by many in Bulls circles for costing them last year’s final at Loftus. While a number of his decisions were questioned after the game, it was his yellow card against Bryan Habana that received the most attention. The Cheetahs fought their way back into the game while the winger was off the field, going on to lift the trophy.

Predictably, however, the Bulls say they are pleased with Kaplan’s appointment for the rematch in Bloem.

Kaplan will be assisted along the touchlines by the two referees who handled the two semi-finals, Marius Jonker and JC Fortuin. Shaun Veldsman will be the TMO.

“Kaplan has been our referee only once this year [against the Pumas] and we spoke to him beforehand and have a good relationship with him,” Bulls coach Pote Human told the Pretoria News on Tuesday. “He is South Africa’s No 1 referee and we simply need to ensure our discipline is right on the day. After all, he can only ref what he sees on the field.”

i agree with you but……do you see all the other things going on….or is it that it has been said for so long that the bulls play dirty that no one sees what really is going on…….just do one thing for me..when you watch the final….keep an eye on the other players and not just the bulls and then we talk again…..keep a close eye on the blond number 8 of the cheetahs…and then we talk again on monday

ig- better than fortuin? no u can’t be serious! fortuin as a ref is like tiger woods as a golfer or roger federer as a tennis player. watching fortuin ref is like watching picasso painting or mozart on the piano

#105 kir – Johnny has just a bit more panache, hence he gets the nod ahead of JC.

PA , It all depends on “smaak” ,

I like a ref that communicates better than Kaplan. He sometimes would let players carry on and then award penalties without saying a thing .

Other refs would communicate -coach players all the time.

But maybe he’s right players should know the rules.

    CapeBull,

I guess it is preference – personally I hate it when refs coach players.

How many times do you need to tell a Richie McCaw: “hands off, hands off, ruck, hands off, han….”

  • 115. BlousteReply to this comment :

Lank laas in Bloem gaan rugby kyk.

Sê my ,kuier die ouens darem nog na die game as hulle so ‘n grote verloor het?

  • 116. FredReply to this comment :

Well I am not too worried about Kaplan this Saturday because I have been watching Gary Botha on the field. He communicates quite a lot with the ref and I don’t think he will be so nice just to stand back and take it. (If he is captain it has to be said).

What happened last year is history. The Currie Cup needs to be won again on Saturday. New year, new final and hopefully a new outcome!!!

  • 117. caneReply to this comment :

    PA (post98).

“Kaplan is the best Ref in SA”

    correction.

He is the best in the World.

    -decisive.
    -lets game flow wherever possible.
    -Internationally, hugely admired.
-communicates with players concisely and clearly.
    -fit.
    -fair.
    -takes no nonsense.

    What more could you want?

  • 118. finmasterReply to this comment :

As I have said even before knowing who’s going to handle the whistle, the Cheetahs, or any other SA team, haven’t got a chance unless we get international refs or Jonathan Kaplan.

It may make a couple of Bulls fans a bit hot under the collor, but the sad fact of the matter is that the SA refs are to scared to penalise the Bulls for the dirty mofo’s they are.

There is no need to explain this just go and watch ANY of their games (objectively) against all the bigger unions.

    *Punching
*Joining the ruck with a leading fist
*Joining the Ruck with a leading shoulder
    *Off the ball incidents:
-Watch their reactions after each and every Cheetah try 2 weeks ago
-Pushing players faces into the ground.
-Overrobust tackling after the ball has crossed the touchline…….
    The list goes on….

Having said that, I believe they can beat the Cheetahs, unfortunately Kaplan will have them playing with 14 men for large parts of the game.

I hope they clean up their act and keep it clean so I can waste my time with issues that really matter.

The yellow cards stats prove virtually nothing, all it proves is that the teams are as incompetant at hiding their foul play as they are at playing rugby.

Dis lekker om n bul te wees

  • 129. PissAntReply to this comment :

    Blouste,

Pleasure, but do not get too excited.

Pumas and Valke’s yellows are largely due to repeated infringements and slowing the ball down because they are outgunned so many times.

Sharks and the other big boys is more for professional fouls and off the ball stuff.

If it was not for JP Nel, the Bulls cards would have been 3…
