Bulls injury blues eased

Five injured Vodacom Bulls players are set to be fit for the Absa Currie Cup final against the Vodacom Cheetahs.
Lock, Adriaan Fondse’s knee injury has made unexpectedly good progress and he now looks likely to be available for selection along with Wynand Olivier, who was substituted in the final after a head collision with Werner Greeff, and Francois van Schouwenburg who is nursing a bruised rib.
Both players trained with the team yesterday, as did Pedrie Wannenburg and Frikkie Welsh, who both passed fitness tests.
The outstanding form of Olivier in particular will have Pote Human hoping the shaggy-haired blond will fully recover before the showpiece match. He carved the Sharks defence to pieces on his return from Springbok duty and has built on that performance as the competition has progressed.
“It certainly feels a whole lot better than at the weekend,” Olivier told the Pretoria News. “The swelling has receded and the knee feels good. I am hoping to be passed fit to play.”
Olivier and Fondse will undergo fitness tests tomorrow.
Wannenburg and Welsh were close to playing last weekend’s semi-final against Vodacom Western Province, but were omitted as a precautionary measure.
Human was guarded about the composition of the squad, which he is expected to announce on Thursday, but hinted that he would stick with the players who have brought him success thus far.
“Everyone wants to play. It makes it difficult, but we are not likely to make many changes.”
Welsh is most likely to start on the bench, while the form of Derick Kuün and Hilton Lobberts makes Wannenburg’s inclusion in the run-on team less clear cut than it seems.
The likelyhood is that the Bulls will go with the big, physical back row of Pierrre Spies (eighthman), Wannenburg (blindside flank) and Danie Rossouw (openside flank). Derick Kuün will be unfortunate to get dropped to the bench while Hilton Lobberts will drop out of the match-day 22 completely.

’n Rugbybal wat 31 jaar gelede ’n wendrie in die geskiedenis van Curriebeker-eindstryde verewig het, word Vrydagaand ’n erfenis vir Pierre Spies, skitterende jong Springbok-losvoorspeler van die Blou Bulle.
Sy pa, Pierre sr., het in die 1975-eindstryd, ook in Bloemfontein, met ’n skouspelagtige drie in beseringstyd die wenpunte vir Noord-Transvaal teen die Vrystaat behaal (12-6).
Dié bal waarmee Spies die wendrie en Keith Thorissen die daaropvolgende doelskop behaal het, is deur Joubert Strydom, een van die baljoggies, opgeraap en as ’n aandenking gehou.
Strydom, wat Noord-Transvaal, Transvaal en die Vrystaat op die krieketveld verteenwoordig het, is die seun van Steve, wat diep spore in Vrystaat-rugby getrap het en as skeidsregter eens die houer vir die meeste toetse en Curriebeker-eindstryde was. Nou het Strydom (Joubert) dit goed gedink om die bal Vrydagaand tydens ’n spesiale gelentheid aan Spies te oorhandig. Thys Lourens, die Bulle se kaptein in die 1975-eindstryd, sal dit bywoon.
Spies jr. sal dié gebaar hoog op prys stel omdat sy pa só ’n groot rol in sy rugbyloopbaan gespeel het. Hy is twee jaar gelede skielik aan ’n hartaanval oorlede.
Spies het die hele land aan die praat met sy skitterspel.
Hy is in die Bulle se laaste twee wedstryde (teen die Cheetahs en die Westelike Provinsie) as speler van die wedstryd aangewys. Heyneke Meyer, hoofafrigter van die Bulle, gee egter die versekering dat die 21-jarige Spies nie deur sy nuutverworwe roem oorweldig sal word nie.
“Ons doen van ons kant af alles om hom te help om die slaggate wat deel is van bekend wees, mis te trap.
“Gelukkig is hy self baie sterk in die kop en bied sy familie hom ’n sterk ondersteuningsbasis,†meen Meyer.

rossouw should move to lock. then the loosies would be wannenberg, spies, lobberts/kuun. with hottie dropping out of the 22, and fondse on the bench. that way one accomodates all your best players.
also frikkie should not be in the 22. you cant make your comeback in a final. but he will be, at the expence of basson probably! except if u drop powell, and leave basson as 9 replacement.
feel sorry for the likes of dries scholtz who played his hart out against the cheetahs(twice) this year. he was the one responsible for 3 or 4 tries in those games, so maybe he should be looked at once agin as that 10/12 channel defence of the cheetahs seem to be weak.

Ek weet jy probeer nou n hou na die bulle mik omdat die ou n bul trui aangehad het – maar dis nie iets om n punt te probeer bewys nie. ek is oortuig dat die meeste moordenaars nie eers rugby kyk nie…en ons weet ook nie wat daar gebeur het nie, al wat ons weet is dat dit verskriklik is. In n oogwink is daai ou se lewe verby.

Ek sal nie vir Russel op loskakel speel nie, hy het my nie laasjaar in Argentinie beindruk nie. Ek dink hy is n heelagter, wat op vleuls kan uithelp, maar moet aan die hoe bal vang ens werk. Ek voel op heelagter het hy die meeste ruimte op gaps te slaan – soos Aplon, of Basson bewys het in die ccup. Sy skopwerk is te swak om n loskakel te wees in my opinie.

hougaard (another small oke) got cut in half juring the world cup 2003 by brain “the chiropratcor” lima but he got up again and didnt do so bad after.
ive also seen andre have some rather poor games but class is permanent and form he temporary and both those ous have class in shed loads.

supa…im telling you! the kid is a monster,have seen him with my own eyes and juring the easter st johns fest one of the commentators(johan van rensburg) introduced him as a 153kg wonder kid.
the other commentator said he musnt speak twak on air and they did research and it was found out to be right. the interviewed his coach at paul roos and he said stephan doesnt practise with the other laaities,he just does cardio and a few running drills.
after one scrum juring the st johns fest his oppostie number refused to carry on with the game,how crazy is that?!
will find out what he benches but i believe it is just over 200kg at the moment and as a chom of mine at maties said…the real test comes when he plays koshuis rugby!

With his explosiveness and strength on his feet he should be devastating amongst the forwards…..
Just donno how well he would do with tackling the forwards though….

supa…i have to AGREE with you there.
look at hougaard and morner steyn.even jp pieterson and hottie louw was told by wp that he was surplus to requirements and then he scored a try against them last weeknd…ouch!
i remember hougaard at school(boland agric i think) he was spoken about in the same vein as gibbs when he was at school and in many respects gibbs was a far better rugby player than cricket player afterall he made sa colours in ALL 3 sproting codes(soccer,rugga and cricket) but chose cricket for its longevity,
to stand up from a MONSTER tackle like that and still play on(hougaard in 2003 rwc) shows the guy has character.
but yes supa,wp have had a habit of shooting themselves in the foot onver the years and i dont think its going to stop anytime soon.

The Boland deliver lots of players, which WP sometimes take credit for – like Hougie – from Boland Landbou. MJ etc also from Boland. If Boland were able to keep al their talent – theyd be great competition!

look at wp when james small and **** muir were here in 97.one of the best wp teams i have seen ever,following year,both of them were gone.
**** wanted to carry on as did small but were both shown the door..and this after they had both helped wp win the cc.i was there that night and when jan harme van wyk scored in the hoekie(right in front of me) i thuaght there was going to be anarchy!(amongst wp supposters ofcoarse)

Cooke was die jaar gekontrakteer by griekwas vanjaar, het net S14 saam met ander griekwa ouens by cheetahs gespeel. Was meeste van die seisoen beseer. Het aptekerswese by potch geswot. Ek het ook gehoor hy gaan miskien wp toe, maar sover def. nie cheetahs toe nie.

Cooke het sy rubgy by die Luiperds geleer soos Naas O, soos Willem De Waal soos Jaco Engels. Bevrees geen meer goeie spelers oor nie. G’n wonder Boland het met hulle gemors nie.

Please just teach Marius Delport of the Bulls to tackle. He is very tentative on defence and arrives way too late on the cross defence. We need someone that tackles ferociously against the Cheetahs come Saturday. I think Delport is highly overrated and needs to pull up his socks big time on Saturday.
If Frikkie Welsh plays he should also start putting up thedefensive effort of 2-3 years ago. This season has seen him miss way too many tackles – the one earlier in the season where the (Province?) wing ran around him was a classic example of how NOT to tackle.
The whole backline must tackle like Wynand and JP. The wings must come to the party on Saturday.
And another thing – leave Gary as captain. He has momentum and is in the engine room and fires up the whole pack.
