Keo, in his News24 column, reminds the Muppits that Saturday’s Currie Cup winner was identified some time ago.
This is what I wrote in my column on September 27:
‘One team of the top five is going to miss out and it is going to be the Lions. Brave and brilliant in the last seven matches, the Lions will curse their early season experiments that cost them easy points. Lesson learned by Eugene Eloff who will not easily again surrender league points to prove a point to his senior players.
‘The Cheetahs will lose in Pretoria on Saturday but still end top of the table, with the Bulls ending second on points difference from Western Province who’ll take the five league points at Newlands. The Sharks will hammer the Falcons to set up another trip to Bloemfontein and a semi-final exit from the competition.
‘The Sharks, my early season call to win the competition, have mixed and matched so much this season that they cost themselves a home semi-final and with that any chance of winning the competition. The Sharks can’t beat the Cheetahs at the moment. In the other semi-final match-up Western Province will travel to Loftus and this time there won’t be an ambush.
‘I’m tipping the Bulls to win on Saturday, win against Province the next week and then travel to Bloemfontein and set the record straight for last season’s defeat to the Cheetahs in the final.’
Are these words, written more than two weeks ago, to be viewed as some sort of prophecy? Absolutely not. Because I also wrote in May that the Waratahs would win the Super 14 and the Wallabies would triumph in the Tri Nations.
Domestically, though, it was always going to be the Bulls once the Sharks started fading through excessive experiment.
That’s why I could write with such conviction on September 27 as to how the Bulls march to the trophy would unfold. It is now October 11 and nothing in my view has changed. I am still backing the Bulls to go to Bloemfontein and win. Individually, they are a better unit and cohesively they have made as much impact as the Cheetahs in the last month.
Take nothing away from Ollie le Roux and Rassie Erasmus. The former, in his role as captain, has been inspirational. The latter is the most exciting thing to happen to the South African coaching scene. He is talented, innovative and definitely not a one season wonder. South Africa rugby is healthier in the coaching department because of Rassie’s emergence.
But if you want to know why the Cheetahs won’t win on Saturday, then you simply have to look at the tight five composition of the Bulls and the kicking game of Derick Hougaard at flyhalf. The tight five will set up the victory for the visitors and Hougaard’s boot will close the deal.
There won’t be much in the final, but all you need to win it is one point.
Statistics favour the Bulls. They’ve lost just one out of their last 10 against the Cheetahs, while winning the last four in Bloemfontein. The defeat happened to be in last year’s final and it took a miraculous comeback and the bounce of the oval ball to sink them.
The surprise element a year ago was with the Cheetahs, but this weekend there won’t be any such tricks in the party packs handed out during the final. The Bulls know exactly what to expect and they are in no doubt as to what they have to do to succeed. This is a victory that will be fashioned on preparation as much as execution and with Heyneke Meyer back from his overseas travels his input is crucial.
Pote Human has settled as Bulls coach, but Meyer’s technical and analytical contribution will be massive to the Bulls success. He remains the Director of Rugby at the Bulls and the man in charge.
The Bulls have been the form team in South African rugby in the last month. They’ve put 50 past the Sharks in Durban, given the Cheetahs 41 points in Pretoria and scored 45 comfortably against Western Province a week ago. They’re scoring tries with ease and Hougaard is kicking well.
Gary Botha’s captaincy has been outstanding and the tight five are fronting for each challenge. The Cheetahs, this season, have thrived on forward domination against most teams. The exception has been when playing the Bulls. That is why they lost in Bloemfontein earlier in the competition, got hammered in Pretoria and will again come second best on Saturday.
The path to the final was recorded here a fortnight ago. And nothing in the last fortnight convinces me to change the call that has the Bulls to win the Cup again.

i just wonder if the bulls really know what to expect. they all are of the opinion that they were robbed last year and then going on to beat the cheetahs three times after that….. now we know that the blue bulls and their supporters are not rocket scientists; they’ve already put the champagne on the ice.
the cheeaths on the other hand know exactly what to expect. i just wonder what their reaction to a more intense cheetah team will be? there might be just a wee little surprise waiting for them.

Bulls will have to go out and TAKE it, not wait for something divine to happen and for the Cheetahs to lie down and hand it to them.
They will have to defend much better out wide and play within the laws so as not to give Kaplan any opportunities to penalise them. We all know Kaplan is anti-Bulls (only he can set the record straight on Saturday).
The Bulls will also have to THINK better – both in preparing the strategy, and in executing it on the field.
Keo punting the Bulls has not helped the Bulls’ cause either.

GCC, you guys can relax because the last thing I will do is put champagne on ice before Saturday. There is no way in hell that I am even remotely confident about a Blue Bulls victory on Saturday.
Not with the Cheetahs best player, kaplan, there.
The Blue Bulls will have to play the PERFECT game, and I mean perfect to win the CC.
We will have to be 24 – 0 up in the first quarter and then continue on from there.
At least one Blue Bulls player will be carded. That is a given, and it will be controversial again like with Habana last year.
When the Cheethas team is announced you will immediately be able to see who the guys will be that have been tasked to play dirty.
And , of course, after every whistle a Cheetah player will go down “injured” so that Oily can read the lights.
Like I said, prepare for a final of at least 3 hours.

My head says the bulls .. but just
My heart is with the Cheetahs.
If the bulls actually showed up to play rugby last year in the final instead of trying to prove a point they would have won .. but they did not.
This years final will be allot closer, and may well be decided on one bounch of the ball again.
We all know how the bulls are going to play and what they are going to do .. if there are any surprises, it will come from the cheetahs side.

The team in last year’s final that didn’t pitch up to play rugby was the Cheetahs, not the Blue Bulls. I am assuming you were not at Loftus but at an anti-Bulls gathering of wp, sharks etc. supporters and therefore could not see what was happening.
If the Blue Bulls win on Saturday I will be pleasantly shocked.

#35 .. BB agree .. the cheetahs went to loftus last year with the idea of disrupting the bulls, .. they set them up before the game, and then during the game, and the bulls were dumb enogh to fall for it.
If the bulls actually concentrated on playing rugby last year instead of trying to prove how tough they were they would have won the game easily.
This year it is going to be different though, because I think both teams will actually show up to play rugby .. and it is really to close to call.

Jake White has really shot himself in the foot by handing out long-term contracts to players that are really unprofessional. Now he is stuck with them. And I think his attempt to make the provincial coaches look bad by them honouring that contract. I think that of Jake was feable and cowardly. It would be interesting to see Jake White’s elite play against the SA Currie Cup all-stars. I have a feeling the Elite would have their asses handed to them. My Currie Cup All Stars:

If you study almost every ruck and maul last week, you’ll see more times than not the Bulls fall off their feet and over the ball and sometimes even dive over the ball. They also take out players not bound to the ruck. Idiots like Marius Delport think its clever to Bully people. Around the fringes the Bulls are almost always off side. On the ground the first guy falls over the ball and the second guy steals it. Just watch Saturday. If you look at the Super 14, just see where we get killed, the rucks and loose play.

Geez talk about blowing your own trumpet. The prediction of the top 4 of the cc could have been made months ago and as for the eventual winners, that too has never really been in any doubt. Last seasons result was dependant upon the bounce of the ball and Bulls misfortune. This year the Bulls will steamroller the Cheetahs. The main issue here is that the Cheetahs are far and away the 2nd best side in the CC and the gulf between them and the Bulls is massive. WP, Sharks and the Lions are simply not consistently good enough and right now SA rugby is at its lowest ever ebb the quality has never been this scarce.
When players as inexperienced as Pierre Spies rejoin the CC and the quality levels shoot up immediately it doesn’t reflect well on our domestic competition. Has the CC been exciting this year? Definitely, probably the most exciting CC in years. Will the AB’s, France or the Aussies be worried by what they saw in this years CC? I very much doubt it!

68, I have noticed the diving over the ball for turn over. However, I will not give that as an excuse. We were outplayed in all departments. I think province played really well in the first 20 until Kuun’s second try, which broke us. And of course Melck’s unforgiveable mistake.
I don’t need to comment on Delport. Stupid fool. The wheel will turn. The bulls to take the cup though.

Anyway, she had plenty to say and asked me to pass on her thoughts about the Boks and the CC final. Nancy’s thoughts in a nutshell:
• The Bulls have destroyed SA rugby with their boring style of play and the Springbulls are next because they have been infected by too many Bulls players
• WP were done in by a cheating ref
• Werner Greef is clearly the best flyhalf in SA rugby
• The Cheetahs will loose on Saturday because the players are too stupid to think for themselves – they need a DJ to signal the way with lights

Keo, big matches are not won by individuals, they’re won by a cohesive team of expereinced players. Cheetahs have the edge on ‘cohesion’ and Bulls have the upper hand on ‘experience’.

I’m a Bull supporter but Delport was out of line, we play the game hard and physical but thats just not on. It’s like the boo-ing on loftus, it never used to happen, i hate it. leave the kicker and applaud when he is done.
But also bolla taunting fans after he scored a meaningless try is also stupid, but funny how no one mentions that any? And he taunts supporters sitting underneath the scoreboard, maybe he just can’t read.
The players should play the game, hard and ruthless sure, but not way off the ball behind everyones back, and not the supporters, leave them out of it.

Xhreni – i would actually put the Bulls as the favourites, the Cheetahs while defending champions, are running into a team that had peaked at the right time, got some serious fire power back in the form of uncontracted boks. It should be a great final and personally i think the right teams are there. I would like the States to win, mainly because they have won it so few times but i suspect Bulls by 12 or more !

But a rolling maul destroying the opposition is awesome, and a good constructed play leading to the oppo 22m and then some more is also fantastic. I must say, as much as I hated it, the passion the Bulls play with, is a joy to see.

Its teams like the Stormers, who can think creatively, that beat teams abroad. When at home, play the Springbulls. The set pieces will be a one team affair if the bulls are awake before the game.
The cheaters will be only in the game on the back of bulls mistakes.
The ruck and mauls – if the bulls gel then the cheaters will be in for a long day the bulls have spies he does play a better game than watson – it seems spies is a team player.
No team can afford an individual who plays in the scrum to do things on their own – I think watson tends to do this.

It is amazing how when people have this huge net to hide behind they not only forget their manners but totally lose respect for the people they are slagging as they do not have to face the consequences of what they say.
In my oppinion it is the same as terrorism, a cowardly act, and completely spineless. There is in my view, no point to engaging with these people, as, if you were standing in front of them they would not be saying the things they do, therefore, as a person they do not exist, ergo, should be ignored.

My associate from Pollsmore and I spent good time caining it in New Orleans (before great flood) and had many a sordid week in various blues and jazz bars making various deals. In actual fact Smith batted at a 30/40 higher s/r…
He just lost his wicket sooner and as you know highest scores always win over s/r…..
But he did bat well that game after a very slow start….
And he had a few good starts in this years domestic one days at a good pace…..never really capitalised though….
Now we just need him to take it into the odi’s….

If Gibbs goes cheaply its because he is trying to pick up the scoring pace that the players before him let get out of reach. Yes, he is a miracle maker. But it is unreasonable to expect him to do a ***** every game. Let that other whitey who cannot scrap together 3 runs – the youngster from the Pta who now opens (I forget his name) – move to 6 and make Gibbs open where he isn’t under pressure to undo all the bad work of the top order.

When I popped out to get lunch a few minutes ago, all the newspapers had this heading: “Robinson: Don’t Blame Me!”
McLaren is getting a lot of slack, which is correct as I forecasted a disaster with the dumb 3-5-2 formation. But surprise surprise, as per the World Cup, none of the players (bar Robinson) are really getting stick…
Robinson is also blaming the Croatian goalkeeper for messing up that area of the pitch in the 1st half with his goal kicks. Idiot! It certainly didn’t look as if the ball deflected off something – more like a clean miss as he lazily tried to hack the ball!
I enjoyed that though – lagged my *** off when it happened. Ain’t nothing better than England being beaten by a lesser favoured team!!!

i read that luke watson might not even play for the world 15 if he was selected because of the knocks and bruises he got from the cc and because it might disrupt his preparation for next season. if he doesnt think he will be physically ready for a match on the 2 Dec then how could he be ready to play for the boks on the 5 Nov? IMO he is afraid to play against the boks

Kyk stats is great as jy daarin glo! Saterdag gaan nie net oor hoe groot jou forwards is nie en hoe hulle oor die laaste paar games gevorder het nie, nee, Ek dink/glo die team wat die beste kop op die veld het gaan wen. Dis nie hoe groot die hond in die fight is nie, maar hoe groot die fight in die hond is. Die cheetahs is gatvol vir 2de plek. Hulle is in n goeie plek mentally. As die bulls se dinge dalk nie mooi uitwerk nie en hulle raak agter, sal hulle genoeg kop kan he om terug te kom? Ek weet een ding! En dit is as die mental side reg is gaan: 1) disipliene wat gaan lei tot beter konsentrasie 2) wie dit die meeste wil he sal dit ook kry! Amen

Hi Im Luke Watson. All this criticism about me seems a bit ruff. All Im doing week in and week out is playing my heart out for Province. I would love to play for the Boks and believe I will be an asset as I showed most of my opponents up during the CC. I rate Pierre Spies would be my ideal no.8 and Juan on the blindside. Pedrie and Jacques are good but both are morons. Pedrie along with Wynand are pretty boys and like to put on makeup before games. Gary Botha is a typical Pretoria Jock and it would be embarrassing for him to lead a press conference. Thats my view.

Well, her dad developed some heart condition – nothing too serious – but he was advised to stop drinking wine. So a bunch of us were all invited over to a bash at this mansion, with an open invitation to empty the cellar…in 1 night! Man, we were fussy. Refusing a 2nd glass of Kanonkop to rather open & try a Meerlust etc!!!

RedCard, the problem was a lack of accountability. Hansie was so revered and respected that to a certain extent he was coach, captain, manager and physio. that is why it is such a sad story. Perhaps Gibbs would have realised his potential had he not been mislead?

I guess South Africans like to claim that there is a global conspiracy against them, but i reckon much of the Bad Bulls TMO’s decisions was incompetence rather than collusion.
It is tough to bribe rugby players, apart from the goal kickers. such a team orientated game. every-one would have to be in on it, and if you arent fully psyched for rugby, you are going to get injured.

when we used to play two day cricket (two saturday’s constitute a game) in away games, if the other team were struggling, they would soak the pitch on the friday night claiming the sprinklers had leaked.

Spears, they also ended down the order in the CC, for 5 years running they did not even make the semi’s.
2002 CC was their turn around and then they went on to win against top of the Log Lions at Ellis Park.
Since then they ended in the top half of the S14 and made the semi’s in the last 2.
So who knows, maybe the same for the Lions.
They had one heck of a turn around, but just fell short of the semi’s. Were voted by many favourite if they make the semi’s. Lets see how they perform in the S14.
They already did better this year winning 2 matches and drawing one. They only won one and drew one last year.
