Eddie’s red-faced (again)

Eddie Jones’s ragged Reds were given a beating by the Blues in a pre-season Vodacom Super 14 friendly.

Jones’s Brumbies and Wallabies teams rarely enjoyed visiting New Zealand and nothing has changed for the likeable Aussie coach. As always Eddie found the good in a 38-9 whipping against a Blues side that was true to pre-season form.

The Blues, in the last few years, have smashed teams in the warm-ups, only to be smashed by the same teams in the tournament proper.

Jones was quick to point out that the match reflection was what happened in the first 40 minutes. His team trailed 10-9 and he said that’s what had given him hope. The second half was one in which both teams ran mass substitutions and the match turned into a contact session. By all accounts the Reds did the defending and the Blues had the ball.

The hosts scored five tries to nil and new Reds rugby league recruit Clinton Schifcofske kicked two penalties.

The Blues were without most of their leading All Blacks.

Scorers
Blues
Tries – Daniel Braid 2, Onosa’i Tololima Auva’a, Rudi Wulf, Isaia Toeava
Convs – David Holwell, Isia Toeava
Pens – Holwell (2) Toeava

Reds
Pens – Clinton Schifcofske (2)
D/goal – Berrick Barnes

Well done Auckland Blues it was a good win and yes it maybe different the next time they meet but I dont think so because they will be playing in Auckland,Eden Park and the Reds will still lose because Eddie Jones has to realise that Rugby is played for 80 mins not 40 mins and they need to be more consistant away from home..good luck to the Reds because I live in Brissie and I hope the Blues make the final because this is where I was born…..

I do not think that Eddie can build a team. Thoughout his coaching career he has only being able to take established teams built by better coaches and basically keep the engine running until it broke down.

Teams will enjoy playing against Eddie’s wooden spoon candidates.

Eddie must have the biggest mouth downunder..always yapping but without the results to back it up.

actually this was a case of the former student beating the master. dave nucifora (blues HC) was eddie’s assistant at the brumbies.

if eddie could develop his forward coaching skills, he could still achieve a lot of success. forward play (especially scrums and mauling) are his weak area.

I like the Reds.Although results lack they have a nice brand of rugby which involves a lot of running with the ball.
But i don`t see any improvement on the results 2007 because Eddie Moans is their coach.

lots of running with the ball? hell only latham runs…

the rest is all gritty, but uneffective off the ball tactics. probably the most boring team in the S14, and the maroon jersey doesnt help them either…

not sure what you mean by the comment about eddie’s brumbies teams rarely enjoyed travel to NZ. topped the log in 2000 and 2001 including a win at jade not many coaches have done that.

the reds have played conservative rugby over the past 11 years

As usual, Jones talks a great game after having ‘coached’ a side to another big loss. Jones coaching tenure of the Wallabies produced one half decent victory – the RWC 03 semi vs All Blacks. The Wallabies were (and remain) a national embarrassment thanks to Jones. I foresee a long S14 season for Reds fans. We the paying public will no doubt have to endure endless moaning from Jones about how they matched them for 60mins, bum Ref calls, dodgy facilities and unruly media types. Can’t wait for the Reds vs Tahs clash this year. My tip is Jones will be in the press more than the players!!
