End of the World

Australia shattered the Proteas’ World Cup dreams with a crushing seven-wicket victory in St Lucia.

This was a truly abysmal performance from a South African side that spoke a great game beforehand. Unfortunately, when it came time to actually deliver the goods on the field, they froze like a deer in the headlights.

The Proteas were guilty of overconfidence following their victory against England — a side ranked seventh in the world. All of a sudden they believed they could beat Australia (based on what?) and told anyone who cared to listen that they had a great shot. Like during their last tour Down Under, when Graeme Smith had so much to say, that bravado backfired badly.

When Smith won the toss on Wednesday and decided to bat first, he knew the pitch would offer the bowlers something early on. The captain must have regretted his decision the moment he was castled by Nathan Bracken for 2, playing an overly aggressive shot.

Having watched his captain throw his wicket away, key batsman Jacques Kallis went in similar fashion to Glenn McGrath for 5. AB de Villiers and Herschelle Gibbs played sensibly, before the opener, on 15, edged a Shaun Tait delivery to Adam Gilchrist.

It soon got a lot worse.

Ashwell Prince had a brain explosion when he chased a wide delivery from McGrath and edged it to the ‘keeper. Mark Boucher then nicked the first ball he faced to Matthew Hayden at first slip to leave the Proteas’ innings in tatters at 27-5.

Gibbs and Justin Kemp temporarily halted the carnage, adding 60 runs for the sixth wicket, before Tait had Gibbs (39) and Andrew Hall (3) caught behind. Shaun Pollock then gave Brad Hogg a simple return catch and the Proteas were 103-8.

Andre Nel, to his credit, managed to stick around for a lot longer than most of the established batsmen. However, the tailender stupidly chose to exchange words with Shane Watson, which is acceptable if your team’s on top, but only makes you look like an idiot when you’re in major trouble. In any event, Nel scratched his way to 8 off 41 balls, before lobbing an easy catch to Micheal Clarke off Tait.

Having made virtually no impact during the World Cup either with bat or ball, Kemp kept going at the other end. He was given a life on 48 when Tait dropped a sitter on the boundary, only to be prevented from reaching fifty when Watson bowled Charl Langeveldt to close the innings at 149.

South Africa needed early wickets to fight their way back into the game, and they struck early when Langeveldt bowled Gilchrist. Australia should have been 6-2 when Prince dropped Ponting, who raced to 22 before having his stumps rearranged by Nel.

A 66-run partnership between Hayden and Michael Clarke settled any nerves Australia may have had, before Hayden mistimed a drive off Pollock and was caught by Smith for 41.

Clarke (60*) and Andrew Symonds (18*) then finished the job with 111 balls remaining.

South Africa 149 (43.5 overs)
Justin Kemp 49*, Herschelle Gibbs 39, Shaun Tait 4-39, Glenn McGrath 3-18
Australia 153-3 (31.3 overs)
Michael Clarke 60*, Matthew Hayden 41, Shaun Pollock 1-16
Australia won by 7 wickets

In RWC 95, the All Blacks destroyed all comers. In the opinion of many they were the best team of the tourny. That said, on the day of the final, passion and guts prevailed. May it once again be repeated today.

A South African was sitting with an Aussie and an Englishman in Saudi Arabia, sharing a smuggled barrel of beer, when all of a sudden the police entered and arrested them. They were initially given the death sentence but contested this and were finally imprisoned for life. But as it
was a national holiday, the Sheikh decided they should be released after each receiving 20 lashes of the whip.

As they were preparing for their punishment, the Sheikh suddenly said: “It’s my first wife’s birthday today and she asked me to allow
each of you one wish before your whipping, but you can not wish to not be whipped!”

The Englishman thought for a second then said: “Please tie a pillow to my back before whipping.” This was done but the pillow only lasted 10
lashes before the whip went through. The Englishman cried in pain.

The Aussie saw this and said: “Please tie 2 pillows to my back before whipping.” This was done and lasted for the whole 20 lashes.
    The Aussie stood up smiling.

The South African saw this but before he could make his wish, the Sheikh said: “As you are from South Africa with all that crime, a cricket team who is always losing in a final and a rugby team who can’t win anything, you are permitted to have two wishes!”

The South African thought for a second, then said: “Thank you most Royal and Merciful Highness. My first wish is to receive a hundred
lashes with the strongest, toughest whip available.”

“If you so desire,” the Sheikh replies with a questioning look on his face, “and your second wish?”

“Tie the Aussie to my back”

  • 156.shooter: Reply to this comment

    k’mon boykies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why did we choose to bat first?

Haven’t these pitches helped the bowlers early on?

And since when do we have the balls to bat aggressively without the “freedom” of chasing a monstrous total?

This makes me sick, who cares if we were number 1 for a while, who cares about the score we chased down in Jo’burg over a year ago. Teams are judged on World Cup’s, and we have won none, heck we have’nt even made the finals. SA have no excuse for this, they won the toss so they controlled their fate there and none of the dismisals have being down to poor umpiring – just poor batting!!!!!!!

“We know two good performances can make us world champions”. – Smith

“We want them to play as well as they can, and then beat them,” he said, adding, “They will know they’ve been in a match.” -Smith

“They must know we will give nothing less than 100%,” – Kallis

“We want our supporters to be proud of us. That is why we are as ready as can be for this match. We have also had messages from the Bulls and Sharks rugby teams to wish us well. We know what it means to the people back home and we can assure them we will do anything to ensure they will be proud of us.” – Mickey

You gotta get your prvious coach back. To beat the windies soundly is awesome but then the team got back to SA and for the first time ever a player selected a coach and SA slid down the rankings in the tests.

Gibbs is playing well a competitive score rests on his shoulders.

I just returned from Dresden back to Leipzig. I thought I would be back in time for the start of the match. Well, my train was delayed.

This is the first time I have a chance to look at the scoreboard.

Now I always thought that I did not have a hearing or seeing problem, but with the score at 55/5 I am convinced I need help….

The difference between SA selection and Australia is that if you don’t perform you get dropped.
In SA you have to be on the wrong end of the race/province (hell that fits well) stick to get dropped.
Look at Pieter Kirsten 18 months of **** and he had to drop himself. Say a lot for Pitere, always knew his limitations/form. Pitty that the selectors don’t have the same foresight/fortitude/facing of reality.

The problem is that the captain is not part of the selection process like in the days of Hansie.
Now he is not held responsible. the coach is also not held accountable. There is no one who is at fault and no one is crapped out.

Who was the temporary coach? the one just before Arthur. Now he sorted the players like Boucher out. And we turned from pathetic with Simons to a fighting crowd.

Now we are a bunch of wets and nobody does anything about it. Time to change the coach and the system. The captain must pick his team.

    What do you say?

Every loosing team at a World Cup invariably looses their Captain as he has not done his job.

THe players, I feel, do not play for Smith. He has stabbed Polly in the back once before, and I think that there are better players who should still be there, but are not becuase of differences with Smithy!

    Impala #501,

Non of the ‘old guard’ thought Smith was good enough and their comments are being amplified today.
Since ‘readmission’ the SA top order have been dominated by WP players (at least 60%). If you believe that in 15 years the batting has been properly dominated by one province then statistics will prove you totally wrong. SA’s previous performances in one day matches has been dominated by the lower order – in bowling and in batting. The ‘facts’ are there if you care to take a look.
Smith is not good enough. The comentators that I listen too are very negative as regards Smith’s cptaincy.
He isn’t good enough. Full stop. Any worthwhile selectors (including the captain) would not have the team as it is.
It’s about time all SA times are picked on merit, black or white, WP or otherwise.

What I am saying is that whoever the captain is he should be held accountable for the performance of his team. For him to be held accountable he needs to be 100% happy with who is playing for him. If anyone feels they don’t need to listen to him he can leave them out of the team. It will give him player loyalty.

If the team does poorly now you axe the captain. The next captain plays to the same rules. Coach and captain move together.

I don’t think Smith is the right guy. someone said it earlier. He is to windgat and cannot perform on the field. He might do as a batsman though.

Sure….I believe that, in any sporting code, you select your captain after you have announced your starting team.

The captain can never reside in an ivory tower of sport. He should not be treated special when it comes to selection.

We can then proceed to loose the 2011 WC as well, which will further conceal the value and talent that we have in our team, and cause other teams to underestimate us.

“I feel sorry for Australia. No one underestimates them anymore, and after this WC peformance, they have no more room for improvement. They have nothing to aspire to now, nothing to look forward to, and in each match from now on they will be under the weight of so much expectation…

I honestly think that the Australians are going to lose. They are going to get nervous when they realise they’re chasing such a small total, and they are going to completely collapse. The Australians only know how to score a lot of runs. They don’t know how to score a small amount of runs.

Breaking news: LOL suckers South Africa!

The popula television program, Laugh Out Loud, have pulled off their biggest prank yet. They have suckered the whole South African public into watching an underperforming South African cricket team bow out of the World Cup.

    Smith after the game:

“Man, you guys completely fell for it. We nailed you good and proper. I can’t believe you guys actually thought we were going to try to win the World Cup. You should have known that South African teams historically try to underperform during the WC. This competition is a non-event, really.”

    710. Truth is stranger than propaganda? Mao said that he who controls propaganda controls the world. But first power comes from the barrel of a gun. Obviously he had never met Rupert Murdoch. His concubine is so hot.

Great revolutionary but hopeless ruler.. He smoked cigarettes that cost 200 rmb a packet. In Shaghai cigarettes cost from 1.3 RMB for 20RMB. Mine cost 7.5 RMB. $1 USD is 7.8RMB and falling.

The average income in China is about $1,000 a year and 3.3 times the country wage in the city. As 2/3 live in the country this is hard for most.

Being a prof I can cheat like hell, according to western ethics, but nor ours, and I make more that $3,000,000 USD a year from dodgey (western thinking) ventures. I don’t accept bribes, only commissions and directors fees.

PS An American film on DVD costs $0.40 here. A blank disk costs more.

MS Office costs 5 RMB or $0.40 USD. Beats paying $1,500 AUD doesn’t it?

I think the best strategy to win is to lull them into a false sense of security by letting them score their first 100 runs in ten overs. Then they’ll panic when they see that they don’t have much runs left to score. They’ll choke – guaranteed.

There are others who will say that to defend 149 you just have to play extremely well and be extremely lucky, and that strategy is largely irrelevant. Don’t believe them. They’re a bunch of retards.

SA will pull off a Jamaica-green inspired wonderstroke. Graeme Smith will open the bowling and the entire umpire’s box of replacement balls will be hit into the ocean in the first six overs.

The game will be declared a technical draw and replayed tomorrow.

    Phew!

I sometimes have NZ rack of lamb, which costs about $20 USD but it is often from Mongolia and not so tasty. NZ lamb is almost as good as Argentinian beef but NZ honey is the bees knees.

You must try da bin jia niu rou which is better than lebanese version. A bit like Peking duck but with beef.

Our problem is we fawn over our sportspeople like superior beings, but the ANZACS are wedded to the “tall poppy” syndrome and keep them cut down to being human.

As much as I couldn’t bear to live in a Nanny State like Ozzie, they’re dead right in that aspect.

Graeme Smith needs to be fired as captain and a velskoen suppository Frans Steyn drop-kicked up his 0.

His Mickey Mouse winkie-wipe must go too, and a no-nonsense coach must be brought in to teach our little Protea darlings all about “pressure”.

Graeme Smith was in a reflective mood during the post-match press conference:

“The fact is we were well beaten. Australia had our number from beginning to end.”

Smith finally admitted, “we were beaten fair and square by an inferior team on the day.

“There won’t be any whining and complaining. We just didn’t play well enough. Australia really strutted their stuff, and sometimes it doesn’t matter how inferior you are, you are going to win if you play better than your opponents.

“We definitely had the players to win today,” continued Smith. “But I’m not going to say what if this person didn’t underperform and that person didn’t underperform. I’m just going to accept the fact that we were beaten fair and square by an inferior team.”

Smith continued by saying he expected his team to retain the top spot on the ICC rankings “with ease.”

    801. Actually I think my Kiwi professor friend met Francois three years ago. He lives in Shenzhen, which is a long way from here and he is from the RSA.

Francois has not written back to him since he suggested the Springbok captain lacked skills and ethics and could eventually take Eddies job as chief whinger of Australia. I remember it so well. Francois got annoyed when the Prof suggested that the RSA team was going ok except for passing catching, tackling, running, kicking, and playing fairly.

At the post-match press conference, Graeme Smith was defiant.

“Today we have absolutely demolished the chokers tag. I have strong message to the rest of my team mates, our choking days are over. I am very much tired of the choking, and from this day forward, we will always play to our potential.

“In this particular tournament we had lapses against teams like the West Indies and England. But from this day forward, we will over-perform again.

“Today we have set the standard. We have set the bar low, and we don’t ever intend on falling above that level.”

“I’m just so proud of they guys for their gutsy effort today. There was just so much skill and brillian stroke play. And that wicket from Nel, did you see THAT wicket. It was truly a masterpiece. I must say I was very impressed.”

Smith said that a lot of hard work lay ahead for the team after being knocked out of the world cup, but that right now he was just focusing on the parade.

“We really need to get ready for that. There will be a lot of people that want to welcome us home, and celebrate with us after, what I think, was a special WC performance.”

The problem is that we set ourselves up to fail through our selection policy. We get excited when we win a few consecutive matches, yet we never know whether it’s our strongest team. It’s alien to Australia to lose a few matches, but we expect to lose a few now and again. At least the two best teams are in the final. For us it’s another 4 more years and another coach and selector.

    Some observations:

Graeme Smith must first learn to walk the walk before he talks the talk. He made a lot of brave noises prior to the game, none of which came to fruition. So much for claiming no longer to be chokers because they thrashed England. By highlighting this, you actually admit more than you dismiss!

SA took the wrong approach to the game. They tried to play us at our own game and failed miserably. Had they played their own game, instead of trying to take us on at our game, I suspect the game may have been a real contest.

Smith has no idea how to be innovative in the field. He is obviously not a thinking captain as he didn’t try anything innovative on the field.

SA has to develop a world class spinner. You cannot go into big games like this with little variety in your bowling attack.

SA need to develop a stronger mindset. Part of this means not trying to play like your opponent, but learning to play your own game. For example, what was Kallis thinking?

Don’t get into a verbal war if you can’t back it up on the field. It only entrenches the perceptions you are trying to avoid!

More consistency is needed-especially in the lesser games.

As I said in a previous post, Aus had to have an off day for SA to win-that was never going to happen, not on ANZAC day!

Finally, tough luck guys. There’s always 2011.

  • 1023.SjamBok: Reply to this comment

Gotta admit the one thing that did stand out from this tournament was that our captain leaves a lot to be desired. He was out-thought by Fleming and the Black Caps, made really stupid decisions all the way through the tourney, and JUST managed to scrape through into the semi’s, more by luck than planning.

Against the Aussies, and if we are to ever have a REAL shot at being the best in the world, we need a captain who has a thought process and bothers to plan, not just the man with the biggest mouth and false bravado who can present a face of defiance to the world. When Hansie was captain, you really got a sense that they had done their homework, and that they knew how to approach each game, and how to change their play when and if circumstances dictated it.
Hansie was no angle, but he did know his cricket, and he did do his homework.

Maybe less time in pub, and more time poring over the oppositions strengths and weaknesses, and expected field conditions, and planning?

It is time for Smith to go (as captain anyway). Maybe if his captaincy is taken away, he will return to his double century form?

Graeme and Mickey must do the honourable thing and fall on their swords now. Graeme has a future still as a batsman but his captaincy is poison. Mickey can re-invent himself as Straueli is doing.

Kallis for captain, he showed enough as a stand-in for the injured Graeme, and Ray Jennings or Omar Henry for coach.

Fair enough, at least you seem realistic about various country’s strengths, etc. And I am fully aware that today we weren’t only beaten by a better team team on the day but a better team full stop. Still smarts though.

  • 1038.Ian: Reply to this comment

    esp,

No, I’m not trying to rub it in. Right near the end of the game, I actually felt sorry for Smith, if only fleetingly. However, if SA want to win a WC, and there’s no reason why they can’t, they need to take a long deep look at themselves and make some changes.

For example, when we lost the Ashes in 05, we did some soul searching and the results since then speak for themselves.

If SA have the courage to acknowledge some of the issues, and seek to put structures in place to address them, then they can win a WC. But if it’s head in the sand, then there’s not too much hope.

then go support your local netball team. We need people who have something constructive to say. But I suspect that this is a painful verbal backlash from you for a totally dire performance today and on some other occasions during this world cup. Most of us feel your pain – don’t give up hope! I Don’t think you’d be here if you didn’t care.

  • 1041.citizenc: Reply to this comment

    Why myself Robo #1032?

I learnt long ago that other people’s advice – or mistakes – are there to learn from, my life is too short to repeat that pain.

But as a proud saffa who has visited and enjoyed ozzie/nz several times, but would never want to live there, I get frustrated at the uninformed arrogance that keeps our teams from the top podium.

Ian, well said and agreed, Like I said earlier in this thread it’s those little thing that killed us. (See 938)

  • 1043.petoors: Reply to this comment

You can only get so much milage from a freakich 400+ run chase and a theoretical #1 ranking, before you have to wake up and realise your shortcomings. How thick must Smith be to shoot his mouth of all the time only to have eat humble pie afterwards?

  • 1044.Ian: Reply to this comment

    Robo,

I really do feel for all the SA supporters-they deserve better. They promise so much, then fail to deliver. However, I have a feeling that SA will contest the rugby WC final with France!

’99 was though and it didn’t seem right for a team to be eliminated because of a draw. The game should have been replayed.

I hadn’t seen your post (#938). You make good points.

The other thing that Aus does slightly differently is that we have more straight out bowlers. I noticed that only Langeveldt and Nel were out and out bowlers, whereas for us, McGrath, Bracken, Tait & Hogg are bowlers. It does weaken out batting depth, but give the attack more firepower than having batting all rounders who bowl (e.g. Hall, Kemp & Kallis).

“I know there will be a lot of disappointed people at home, but I hope that in four years’ time we can pay them back for their support.” Graeme Smith.

Is this all we can do these days – hope. Hope we make it in 4yrs, hope the AB’s implode at the WC. Can we not rather do something to effect these things rather than hoping for some kind of devine intervention?

  • 1050.citizenc: Reply to this comment

Smith and Mickey are too busy busy fetching beers for themselves right now – no doubt they’re paying for their own drinks tonight.

Now if someone smart (and sober) will just hire them a pedalo and point them in the general direction of SA at 4am tomorrow morning…

    Pollock
    Kallis (MIGHT be around )
    Boucher (Isnt AB a wicketkeeper?)
    Kemp
    …..
time to get FRESH blood in there now, who’r the guys we have coming up … is there any so called ‘black’ talent ..

I have much more hope for our rugby boks in September, Barring injuries to key players such as Schalk, AP, Frans Steyn, Fourie du Preez, Matfield etc., we’re in witha great chance.

At least Jake does learn from his errors, albeit slowly and reluctantly. Just wish he’d get over his Smittie obsession, though I suppose it’s too late now for this WC.

So embarrassing when Bismarck comes on for Smittie and adds so much value.

Good morning and congratulations to Australia.

Well called, Ian, and enjoy the moment, best wishes for the final.

At least this time rund, there can be no arguing and gnashing of teeth, with neither rain nor a brain explosion leading to our exit.

This time, the harsh reality is that we were comprehensively beaten by a considerably better side.

One side walked the talk, the other continued talking, froze in the advancing headlights.

Again, our inconsistency was a feature.

    Ah well, enjoy yourselves, Australia.

Fellow saffas, while it’s no time for recriminations, if anything good is to come from this, we need to learn the harsh lessons.

We need to pick genuine one-day sides, we need to find variety in our attack, we need a spinner of some note, and we need a decent coach if we’re to persist with a greenhorn captain.

Anyone placed the call to Duncan Fletcher yet?

    No?

    Why am I not surprised?

    Cheers

  • 1067.Ian: Reply to this comment

Thanks Joe, tough luck. I suspect our roles will be reversed come the rugby WC :)

What makes SA’s situation even more difficult is that they cannot pick their best team due to AA.

They need a captain in the mould of Hansie (except for his betting). Graeme Smith does not cut it. He has a lot to say before games, but does not consistently back it up on the field. Until he can, he should learn to keep his mouth shut.

There must be a better coach than Arthur?

Graeme Smith not a bad player but bad captain we need someone more humble not quite sure who though!

  • 1074.citizenc: Reply to this comment

    Morning Ian

The irony is that an exceptional young black spinner, Thandi Tshabalala, and an experienced and useful “black” batsman, JP Duminy, were left at home (as were Johan van der Wath, Lance Klusener etc).

Also Omar Henry, the first “black” spinner to play for SA and a disciplinarian coach (and ex-selector)could justifiably coach the team.

But I suspect SA cricket politics is complex and these personalities/players aren’t currently “in” with the powers that be.

Africa is a continent with a history of rule through patronage, and I gather that our SA cricket is no different, which obviously keeps our best side from ever being assembled. Young Graeme seems to have inordinate influence – but don’t ask me why!?

  • 1075.Ian: Reply to this comment

    citizenc,

It seems crazy to leave behind an exceptional young spinner-as the saying goes, “if he’s good enough, he’s old enough.” Petersen was never going to cut it. They should have gambled as we did with Tait.

  • 1076.citizenc: Reply to this comment

Tshabalala will probably walk into the SA pro20 squad for that “World Cup” later this year, based on his performances through the season. Rather sad he wasn’t given the opportunity earlier. Peterson is brave but just isn’t up to it (like a million amateurs like me :-) )

Tait was magnificent to watch – what a replacement for McGrath!

Sri Lanka are going down big time

SAussie it is indeed very good news about the Reds. If it came to a choice I would rather Horwill than Mcmenimem, I think the latter is just too injury prone to produce any kind of consistent excellence, but Horwill has the potential to be world class.

Re the cricket, Aus confidence is sky high and that will set them well if things get tight/start of wrong in the final. I look forward to reading the surge of joy from all you lovers of Australian cricket on this site should we win.

  • 1106.viewer: Reply to this comment

    morning all.
this is the first 1000+ thread in months. look, the proteas were shocking. they tried to emulate the aussie gameplan from the round-robin match where the aussies targeted the new ball bowlers esp. shaun pollock. but this was a different type of pithc and a different occasion. it called for circumspection. the stage was too big to be charging the new ball. what it called for was for the batsmen to play themselves in as we saw with the innings from clarke, hayden and kemp.
the captain graeme smiff set a bad example. a really wild shot that started the rot. and as for jacques kallis, this is a low in his career. the media has “got” him. the incessant criticism has caused him to crack and play a game that he is not accustomed to. it all started in that match against australia earlier in the WC. since then all his dismissals and actual style of play have been out of character.
there are a few options. accelerate the exit of the over 30 club (pollock, kallis, boucher, gibbs), or hire a new coach amongst other options. smith is not a great leader. look at past WC winning captains-they were all tough ******** e.g imran khan, steve waugh, ranatunga, the WI guy (clive something). compared to these guys, grame smith is a schoolboy.
mickey arthur has hit his ceiling.
we need some out and out quicks and 15 years after re-admission we still haven’t produced a world-class spinner. and transformation has faltered as evidenced by the fact that makhaya ntini was the only black african member of the squad.

there’s plenty of work to be done. panicking won’t help.
the real problem is that a lot of the aussie greats are about to retire. so aus will be forced to field the next generation. the q. for us is who are the next generation of proteas. i bet the aussies have identified their new players. and we haven’t.

For the first time ever I will blame Smith! Has he not seen that allmost everytime he fails – the team fail! The shot he played when he lost his wicket was, given the circumstances, the worst shot I have ever seen played in a cricket match.

I think it is save to say that the Proteas are CHOKERS!

Also don’t see SL beat the Aussies in the final. The Aussies have being playing fantastic cricket and deserve to win the WC.
