Lions revert to strength
26 Sep 2007
Loffie Eloff has unsheathed the big guns for Saturday’s vital clash in Kimberley.
The Golden Lions punished the Valke with a largely second-string outfit, but the importance of this fixture against Griquas sees the best available players named in the starting line-up. Louis Ludik returns to fullback while Louis Strydom, Jano Vermaak and Ryno Benjamin will also run out at Absa Park. Cobus Grobbelaar and Anton van Zyl bulk up the pack in terms of experience, and an entirely new front row in Heinke van der Merwe, Willie Wepener and Lawrence Sephaka are favoured to start.
Eloff has also brought in Walter Venter at inside centre, with Doppies la Grange still struggling with a hamstring injury.
A victory for the Lions all but sees them secure a spot in the semi-finals. They do have one more game next week against Boland, but at Ellis PArk they would be expected to win this comfortably.
Lions – 15 Louis Ludik, 14 Jannie Boshoff, 13 Jaco Pretorius, 12 Walter Venter,11 Ryno Benjamin, 10 Louis Strydom, 9 Jano Vermaak, 8 Jacques Cronjé, 7 Ernst Joubert (c), 6 Cobus Grobbelaar, 5 Franco van der Merwe, 4 Anton van Zyl, 3 Lawrence Sephaka, 2 Willie Wepener, 1 Heinke van der Merwe.
Subs: 16 Ethienne Reynecke, 17 JC van Rensburg, 18 Cobus Grobler, 19 Wilhelm Koch, 20 Straatkat van Zyl, 21 Earl Rose, 22 Wylie Human.
