Steyn stars in Kiwi clobbering

Dale Steyn claimed 5-59 to power South Africa a 358-run win and a one nil series lead against New Zealand.

The Black Caps simply had no answer to the pace of Steyn, who finished with his best Test figures of 10-93.

Steyn picked up two of the three wickets to fall last night and continued the carnage on a pitch that held together beautifully, claiming the wicket of Scott Styris early in the day.

He peppered Brendon McCullum with short pitched deliveries before the plucky right hander eventually succumbed, guiding a half tracker to gully.

Steyn was ably supported by Andre Nel, Jacques Kallis and Paul Harris, the spinner dismissing a determined Jacob Oram.

Oram and skipper Daniel Vettori showed some resolve with a 45-run partnership, the latter showing scant regard for the match situation in smashing anything up to the bat to finish unbeaten on 46 off 58 balls.

But New Zealand’s resistance crumbled with Oram’s demise , Steyn striking the decisive blow in shattering Chris Martin’s stumps. The victory places the Proteas in a good position going into the second Test which starts in Centurion on Friday.

South Africa 1st innings: 226 all out in 74.3 overs
Herschelle Gibbs 63, Mark Boucher 43, Shane Bond 4-73, Chris Martin 3-67.
New Zealand 1st innings: 118 all out in 41.3 overs
Stephen Fleming 40, Dale Steyn 5-34, Makhaya Ntini 3-46, Jaqcues Kallis 2-11
South Africa 2nd innings: 422-3 declared in 126 overs
Jacques Kallis 186, Hashim Amla 176*
New Zealand 2nd innings: 172 all out in 51 overs
Daniel Vettori 46*, Jacob Oram 40, Dale Steyn 5-59

Ja cricket is excellent! skopskiet kinda pissed me off last night that’s why kept having a go at him.

Steyn’s 5-59 kind of reminds me of a Springbok vs England rugby game.LOL!

Test cricket has always and will always be my favourite form of the game followed by ODI’s.
No time for sissies in a test, just ask Brendan McCullum!

NZ are in serious trouble if Oram isn’t fit for the 2nd test. Kyle Mills replacing Bond won’t help the Kiwi’s much either. I’m sure he chucks it now and again!

Anyone read in today’s paper(Rapport) about Justin Kemp not wanting to play for SA anymore?

  • 55.Hooker: Reply to this comment

Greame Smith comments regarding the pitch:

“It was never going to be easy on a wicket like that,” he told a news conference. “You had to get the basics in place, and I think we did that.

“Wickets around the country are becoming poorer. In the last two years it’s become more difficult to find decent test wickets in South Africa.

“If we’re going to take our game forward we need to take note of those things.”

For fark sakes stop F@%$&^^& moaning you twit. You scored 1 and 9.Even Amla scored a ton on it so it coldn’t have been that bad.Maybe you should ask the groundsmen in SA to use drop-in pitches. They can take a strip off the N1 and then maybe you’ll be happy!

Ask Kallis for some tips on how to bat you fool!
Jeez you really know how to piss me off!!

I read abou kemp leaving us, another one gone. Altouph kemp was out of form quite a while he still had a bat from hell on a good day! What do you think hook?

  • 57.Cricketlover: Reply to this comment

André Nel ticks me off. He can’t bowl- took 2 wickets, but polly can do that too- polly can bat and polly isn’t a freakshow. Why do these unmentionables keep selecting him ahead of polly? How stupid can you be? And sure we won without polly, but you can’t expect to win against oz with such a looong tail! I don’t know if I’m the only one but I want polly in nel’s place.

  • 58.wpforever: Reply to this comment

    Nel is a dork !

Nel is one of Smiths pals

#57 – Am also really pissed that Polly wasn’t selected, and the cheek of only informing him that he wasn’t going to be playing THE DAY BEFORE THE TEST….(Apparently if there had been more grass on the wicket, he would have played…..Farrking hell) These clowns are treating one of our icons like ****….Polly would have been a far better selction than Nel – end of. Yip, Kemp has had enough.

  • 61.Hooker: Reply to this comment

Apparently he has retired because he is tired of being critizied and feels there’s sword over his head every time he walks onto the field.
Shame he’s obviously a delicate little flower!
He’s apparently been offered a big Kolpak contract at Kent.
I don’t think it’s such a big loss. Albie Morkel looks set to take over Lance Klusener’s old role and he bowls a lot better than Kemp. Not really a trainsmash imo!!

  • 62.ruck: Reply to this comment

#61 – Probably not a train wreck – but once more, an unhappy player – thats the worrying thing…

    Hooker,

So what was that about Amla and quota’s …

“12 Agreed. AMLA HAS TO BE DROPPED! McKenzie got 182 against NZ in the SA A game.

As far as I’m concerned he should have been dropped for this game. Kallis could have batted 3 and Polly could have been put in the side.

    Quota’s however stopped this!!

A question to you. who will you select, a bowler with a strike rate of 90 or a bowler with a strike rate of 60?

  • 65.Cricketlover: Reply to this comment

Hooker I was thinking exactly what you said! I like it when you say it like it is. Polly should give them the finger and go play rebel. They’ll never give him a job as a coach- look at donald. He’ll make more money and he’ll not be humiliated by these clowns.

As the saying goes: One swallow doesn’t make a summer!
If he can continue, great and I’ll be the first to admit I was wrong but I really don’t think he is up to it. You’re quick to use my post against me but remember he should have been out when he had 2. Then what would you have said.

Quota’s have kept him in the side,IMO,because he hasn’t performed consistently. In Pakistan he made one score and then failed every other innings.

As for McKenzie,I’m a huge fan even though he got a duck today!

  • 67.Cricketlover: Reply to this comment

Maybe we should buy the clowns a book that explains the rules of cricket. Goodnight guys!

What is it with these hectic tummy bugs? The English rugby team knocked out cold on tour here, and now the kiwis suffering? Are they just not used to the particular bugs around this part of the world, is it something to do with hygiene standards, or are they just not washing their hands? We will start getting a reputation like Delhi if we are not careful… (e.g. “Delhi Belly”).

  • 71.Hooker: Reply to this comment

  • 72.Cricketlover: Reply to this comment

Wp, whatever man! Pollock is the man! The so-called hasbeen scored 90 the other day, can’t remember when the others scored that many. Nel is a neverwas.

My issue is how quick the word “quota” is used against non-white players. Its pretty convenient to term a debateable non-white selection as “quota” rather than management selection.

  • 74.dWeePer: Reply to this comment

That 90 was scored against a bowling attack consisting of two spinners and two medium pacers. In that type of scenarios he will score runs. Pollock cannot play really fast bowlers like Brett Lee etc.

  • 75.Hooker: Reply to this comment

Batting avg’s for tests this year are:

    Smith 39.61 (713 runs in 18 innings)
Gibbs 27.64(387 runs in 15 innings)
Amla 31.3(538 runs in 18 innings)
(Would be 20.22 if he was caught on 2)
    Kallis 79.50 (1033 runs in 16 innings)
AB 21(314 runs in 17 innings)
    Boucher 32.4 (389 runs in 13 innings)
Polly 29.56(266 runs in 9 innings)

Except for Kallis, and maybe Boucher and Polly, these stats are shocking!!

Gibbs and Smith in 33 innings have scored 67 more runs than Kallis has in 16 innings.

  • 76.Hooker: Reply to this comment

farjan would Amla be batting at No 3 for any other test country(excl. Bangladesh and Zim) with the above mentioned stats?

I’ve also mentioned on previous threads that AB deserves to be dropped.
I’m sorry if it came across that I’m having a go at him just because he is non-white,I promise you I’m not,but I do feel that he would have been dropped had it have been a white player.Just look at Jacques Rudolph as an example.
The only reason ,IMO, why AB hasn’t been dropped yet is because he is the yo-yo guy in the side. Then he opens then he bats 5,then 6 then he opens agin etc.

  • 77.dWeePer: Reply to this comment

Pollock was selected as a bowler in the first place. In the last 4-5 years he required about 90 balls to take a wicket. Dale Steyn is currently on 42. Ntini, for the same period as Pollock, required about 39 deliveries.

One thing for sure, Ntini is NO quota, he compares well with top bowlers in the world. Pollock is what you expects from a quota.

  • 78.Hooker: Reply to this comment

Agreed that over the last few years Polly’s bowling has been sub-standard (in test cricket) but in the last 2 series at home(India & Pak)he really bowled well. I still feel he should have played against NZ in Nel’s place.
Regarding Ntini, nobody ever said he was a quota player. I think with him,Steyn and Morkel we’re going to have a serious bowling attack in a couple of years time.

  • 79.Staalburger: Reply to this comment

Smith has to get back his balance at the crease and still has a tendency to fall over on the crease and get bowled off the inside edge or LBW.

  • 80.Cricketlover: Reply to this comment

Polly is still beter than andré nel. Nobody regards ntini as a qp, we never said that. Hooker while the where playing the nz test the showed a list of top run scorers of all nations in ’07. Kallis was nr1 and graeme smith no.5 nobody really performed in tests this year except kallis. The guy just tends to keep his bat a little straight, that can be sorted with practice and concentration. Kallis didn’t have great shape in mid last year.

I notice the racists are still around

    Hooker
What is that point about if Amla was caught on 2?
Dropped catches is part of the game.
How many times was Kallis dropped in both innings?
Amla’s record is not much worse then that of AB De Villiers (a white boy).
AB’s played 31 tests and still average in the 30′s.

  • 82.Saturday: Reply to this comment

Just on Nel, I’m not a huge fan but I honestly thought he helped support Steyn well and set up some wickets by bowling with good pace and bounce. His big frame allows this. I think if anything Ntini looked a bit below par for him.

I’m an Aussie so I can say it – maybe a heresy but I thought the attack looked the most venomous it has for a while without Pollock who’s only ‘weapon’ if we can call it a weapon is line and length. But the good players are now taking a risk even with that because he’s lost pace and penetration. I think his batting adds a lot because of your current tail but the usual rule is that when you examine specialist positions such as bowling, you have to go with the best fit. When Morne Morkel returns you can add batting depth without compromising the bowling.

Just on those batting numbers, they don’t look pretty Kallis apart. Nonethless most of your tests during that time were played in SA which is the only place left where the pitches really assist the bowler so even us Aussies admit your averages will be lower for your batsmen. And while Kallis’s stats are great, he does bat at #4. He’s clearly better equipped than any of Smith, Gibbs or Amla to handle the new ball in a technical sense, yet they have to face the music on fiery decks. Kallis steadfastly refuses to bat at #3, much like Steve Waugh refused to move up the order because of his addiction to his average. So bear this in mind when making judgements. Kallis’s technique is close to perfect though.

  • 83.Saturday: Reply to this comment

Oh and while Kemp might be lost to the Kolpak system I read elsewhere that Vaughn van Jaarsveld may be having second thoughts and may return to the SA system.

And the other reason of course that Nel has to be retained is Smith’s ‘***’ love of him!!!!

  • 84.Hooker: Reply to this comment

CL – Kallis had a “bad year” last year. He only avg 48. Including 2 100′s and a 50 not out against Aus.

I agree with Staalburger, Smith’s balance is his problem at the moment. Watch how he was bowled in the 2nd innings to see how he is falling over.

He should rather sort that out than ***** about the state of the pitches in SA!

  • 85.Saturday: Reply to this comment

BTW Steyn’s exploits have attracted the attention of scribes here. What is impressive about him apart from his pace and swing, is that he seems to like the hostility business and has pride in his performance. He’s become more frugal too.

  • 86.Saturday: Reply to this comment

Just on the MOTM award, I think they got it right. Had NZ made runs in the first dig the match could have been shaped differently. But Steyn blew them away. And then after the batsmen started to prosper, he cleaned them up again!

  • 87.Hooker: Reply to this comment

#81 If your referring to me you can go and F### yourself!!

If you had read further than you nose you would have seen that I said AB and Andre Nel deserve to be dropped too.(both white boys as you put it)

Amla didn’t deserve his spot in the side either and if you go look at his stats you’ll see that in just about every test series he makes one score and then fails in all the others.
You obviously haven’t done so because then you would have seen what I was talking about twit!

Ntini hasn’t been bowling well of late but have I said anything about him?
No cause we all know how good he is.
If you can accept that our test number 3 averages in the 20′s then your head needs to be read!
If I’m a racist because I want our NATIONAL side to have the best players in it then I’m guilty.
As soon as a non-white is criticized you decide to use the R word, How mature of you,you idiot!

As soon as you’re prepared to take off your blinkers and see that us “white boys” don’t care who plays for SA as long as they’re the best in their position.

Saturday your side, esp Brett “the jet” Lee blew the Sri Lankans away this morning. I was a little worried when I saw the cloud cover but thankfully the rain didn’t spoil the game. I’m still trying to get over McGill’s delivery that bowled Vandort! Absolutely awesome delivery! Warnie would have been proud of it! Well done!!

So you beat NZ.Hooray! Smith and Arthurs are still ****.South African cricket is still **** as was conclusively proven in the WI. Thje day you beat Australia- even in South Africa – that’s the day I will recognize SA as a cricketing power.Start selecting teams on merit and you might get there!

An extract from an interview with Mickey Mouse:

Proteas coach Mickey Arthur believes South African cricket is in good hands, with younger players standing up to be counted and the team as a whole showing maturity and a sense of responsibility.

We’re in GREAT shape Mickey. We have one batsman who is consistent. We must really be giving the Aussies sleepless nights!!

  • 91.Saturday: Reply to this comment

Agree Hooker, the batting is a worry though the bowling has possibly more promising young quicks than us.

Amla is no #3 and our batting is much stronger. In fairness to your batsmen though, most of them have higher averages outside of SA and look at how well the other countries perform when they visit you. The Pakistani and Indian so-called greats looked quite ordinary on your strips last year and NZ looks downright club standard batting on them, even against your ‘A’ side.

MacGill’s delivery was very special and unlucky for the plucky Vandort.

  • 92.Cricketlover: Reply to this comment

What is wrong with you???You can’t read the half of someone’s comment and then take out what you want and accuse someone of racism!!! This is a democratic country, hooker never used offensive or obscene language towards Amla. You can’t accuse people of something because you feel like it.
I think Amla earned another chance with his performance last week. If he can find some shape, Gibbs also should become consitent, and Smith should go work on some technical difficulties. Ashwell has the talent it just needs to be enforced and AB weeellll…
We really need concistency otherwise we’re not going to even give oz a go.

OZ played real good, you must be proud saturday!
That ball sure was a beauty! It seems Murali isn’t going to break that record afterall…

  • 93.Saturday: Reply to this comment

I guess I’m proud Cricketlover but it becomes a tad boring winning so easily. I love watching competitive cricket and I’d love us to be tested. It’s one of the reasons I enjoy cricket between other nations though you pulverised the Kiwis.

I think your mate Smith needs to go back to Western Province to sort out his technique.
