Meyer’s consolation prize
9 Jan 2008
Saru president Regan Hoskins says Heyneke Meyer will not be lost to South African rugby.
Meyer, with a Super 14 and four Currie Cup titles to his name, was by far the most qualified candidate to replace Jake White. Hoskins admitted that the appointment of Peter de Villiers was not made on rugby criteria alone and that transformation played a part.
The president said he hoped Meyer, who resigned as Bulls coach last year, could be kept in the South African rugby system.
“The President’s Council spent a lot of time in the meeting today discussing Heyneke,” Hoskins said. “We don’t want to lose his experience and want to keep him involved.
“One possibility, and I must stress it’s just a possibility, is for Heyneke to become SA Rugby’s Director of High Performance. There’s been a call in the past for a [director of rugby-type] position to be created that will benefit all SA Rugby coaches [including the Bok coach].”
Meyer could also replace Gert Smal as the Bok forwards coach if he’s willing to work with De Villiers. Meyer was last involved with the national side when Nick Mallett was head coach.

Please, get over yourselves! De Villiers has led junior Springbok teams to victory and this is the natural next step up.
Meyer has won a few Currie Cups and a Super 14 – perhaps he needs to get involved in a few U19 or U21 Springbok teams first and work his way up.
Jake started at those levels and won SA the World Cup in 2007! The winning recipe was that he had worked with the boys as juniors so taking the position as Springbok coach was made easier by the faact that he knew most of the young guys and brought them through the system. De Villiers will do the same.
