Meyer’s consolation prize
9 Jan 2008
Saru president Regan Hoskins says Heyneke Meyer will not be lost to South African rugby.
Meyer, with a Super 14 and four Currie Cup titles to his name, was by far the most qualified candidate to replace Jake White. Hoskins admitted that the appointment of Peter de Villiers was not made on rugby criteria alone and that transformation played a part.
The president said he hoped Meyer, who resigned as Bulls coach last year, could be kept in the South African rugby system.
“The President’s Council spent a lot of time in the meeting today discussing Heyneke,” Hoskins said. “We don’t want to lose his experience and want to keep him involved.
“One possibility, and I must stress it’s just a possibility, is for Heyneke to become SA Rugby’s Director of High Performance. There’s been a call in the past for a [director of rugby-type] position to be created that will benefit all SA Rugby coaches [including the Bok coach].”
Meyer could also replace Gert Smal as the Bok forwards coach if he’s willing to work with De Villiers. Meyer was last involved with the national side when Nick Mallett was head coach.

Hi guys
Just wondering about the whole comparison about PdV vs Jake 4 years ago. People are saying that PdV is a better coach now than what Jake was 4 years ago and that he was also U/21 winning coach etc. What people tend to forget is that Jake already had a good taste of the senior international arena when he was technical advisor for the Boks team that equalised some world record of consecutive test wins. PdV, as far as my knowledge goes, does not have international exposure on senior level which is quite a step up from U/21 level. Am I making a thunderstorm of a normal ****?

If Meyer as used as director if high performance, that would be ideal – he has shown that he is capable of putting in structures at the Bulls that link the various age groups, and keep the bulls school-to-club-to-province feeder system going. Imagine if he could do that for all the provinces? Awesome!! We would have the best feeder system in the world, and our youngsters would dominate from day one, and keep it going into the senior side!!
PLEASE, PLEASE MEYER – accept a position like this!! Its not about ego – we all know that you were the most eminently qualified coach, so there is no shame in the appointment of PdV- you have always claimed to be humble and a servant of the game, now show us that it is so…

Heyneke must not get disillusioned now.
He must reposition himself as he will be the logical successor if Peter fails.
It was the same when Carel duP was preferred to Nick Mallet. Mallet was devastated but bounced back later to become one of our all time best.
He also assembled a team consisting of White, Meyer and De Villiers of course. So in a sense, we are still feeling the Mallet legacy.
Take the Director’s post to just stay in the mix.
My gut feel however tells me De Villiers will surprise most.
He will be keen to see a smooth transition and will therefore not fix which aint broken.
This was always the danger with Heyneke that he might have tried to hard to put the “Heyneke stamp†on the Bok team.
PdV played it smartly as he wants to build on what’s already there.
So what must he do?
1. Confront the fears of the players, analyse and set the parameters immediately
2. Settle on a skipper and senior players
3. Continue with White’s traditions (respect for jersey, ex players)
4. Find a Yster No 3 tight head
5. Settle the new new boys (Heinke, Wian and Ryan ASAP)
6. Settle the fly half (start with Andre P with Peter G as understudy if Butchie is unavailable)
7. Remove the likes of Ashwin, Wynand, Wayne J and Ricky J.
8. Settle Ruan as a No 9 as understudy to Fourie
9. Groom Frans and Connie Jantjes to take over from Percy
10. Stay close to White who will be keen to see his legacy live on
11. Establish a new goal or vision – Trinations 08 then Lions 2009; that will secure another 2 years and going to RWC 2011
