Ikeys channel venue anguish
3 Apr 2008
Losing the right to host the Varsity Cup final will further inspire the Ikeys to win the inaugural title.
UCT finished top of the Varsity Cup log, only losing one league fixture. They edged Pukke on the hooter at the semi-final on Monday, a feat that should have secured a home final. However, it has been confirmed the final will be staged at the Danie Craven Stadium next Monday at 6.45pm. The fact that UCT’s floodlights are not strong enough for television coverage has cost them the right to play this game at home.
“I know there was a significant student uproar over the decision, but it has been confirmed we will play in Stellenbosch,” team manager Steve Butt told keo.co.za. “We had around 8000 people here for the semi-final and it would have been great to play this match at home.”
Butt said UCT would not let this matter detract from what they need to do in Stellenbosch. Maties are the national club champs and have had the better of UCT at the Danie Craven Stadium in recent times, and it will take a special effort to beat them at home.
“We are helluva disappointed, but we won’t lose focus. If anything this will fire the guys up even more.
“We’ve had to battle throughout this competition so it won’t be anything new.”

Dragons in the dust

so, nothings changed. in the days of doc craven maties always got their own way, especially in the intervarsities – part time students, the lot.
hope this gives the ikeys extra incentive.
go boys.
3 Apr 2008, 10:48 am
And there I was, going to take a lazy ride over to UCT for the final, now will have to brave the bluddy rush-hour traffic to get to Stellenbosch, and then find parking a kilometer away at Stellenbosch Hoerskool, if I’m lucky
3 Apr 2008, 10:49 am
May as well watch on TV
3 Apr 2008, 10:50 am
Hey Charo
I saw UCT win there in the 80′s, once, I think, maybe…
3 Apr 2008, 11:22 am
they won there in 2004 also under Dobson and then lost by 2 points in the last two years so they do not have that much to fear. Will be a great occasion at DC with a massive crowd and all sorts of enetertainment. I will leave CT at 6 which should miss the n2 traffic
3 Apr 2008, 11:36 am
6, pearly
N2 will be choking where the 3 lanes become the 2 narrow lanes after ~ passing under the N7.
N1 is a nightmare because of the M5 intersection
I suppose you’re going to arrive afetr the whistle – you’ll still have quite a walk to the stadium, as the area around DC becomes immovably slow with cars
3 Apr 2008, 11:37 am
what a load of bollocks!
3 Apr 2008, 11:43 am
Why can the game not be played at that white elephant called Newlands? In the 70′s the entire stadium was full and the old railway stand was equally split between the 2 uni’s who sang at each other and the atmosphere was incredible!
3 Apr 2008, 11:51 am
Maybe Newlands costs too much for the sponsors?
It will fill up tho, and the amosphere will be great, a prelude to the Stormers return
3 Apr 2008, 12:10 pm
Pity.
I just love the view of CT from the Ikey pitch!
One of the most scenic fields in the world.
3 Apr 2008, 12:37 pm
What a disgrace! Where in the world in any rugby competition does the side that finishes 2nd get a home final? Can you see the Crusaders agreeing to play at Loftus if Canterbury finished top and the Bulls 2nd?Dont think so…Agreed that the lights are not up to scratch at Varsity but surely if they can host a successful semi at 14h30 on Monday then surely they can host a final at the same time?
Just shows that the Dutchmen still control rugby in this country.Such apity-as it would be interesting to see how Stellenbosch would react if the shoe was on the other foot….
3 Apr 2008, 12:43 pm
#9 Grantr – weren’t those days just wonderful .you forget to mention when the miniskirted voluptuous rag queens switched sides to ” greet” the opposing cheerleaders and got one enormous deep throated kiss in front of a roaring crowd ! Oh boy – take me back to those days – even if the ikeys were losing !!!!!!!!

The 1st semi was played in daylight from ~ 1600, and the second followed it by DC stadium lights. The reason for the night slot must surely be about TV viewership – more people at home by 1900 than by 1700
Its bux not Dutchmen
3 Apr 2008, 12:56 pm
superba,
yeah, and mcculley workshop on the ikey half playing rock n roll and some sakkie-sakkie outfit on the other side.
3 Apr 2008, 13:15 pm
What is it with our rugby people and that stupid word ‘helluva’. Annoys me no end.
3 Apr 2008, 13:16 pm
Ikeys deserve this cup – its a travesty that they are conspired to get robbed like this
3 Apr 2008, 13:33 pm
Stop blaming us Maties for all this. Thanks to the bad reputation that Ikeys bring with them we will now not allowed to be sold alcohol in the stadium or bring in our own. This was the main reason why this series got such huge crowds here in Stellenbosch and now they take it away. Since Ikeys yearly causes R 30 000 in damages when their fans visit here.We maties would also have like the game at Newlands or Ikeys if we would have been allowed to drink. So all I’m saying i was Superspot and FNB that decdided to play the game here not us Matie.s So stop blaming .us
3 Apr 2008, 13:36 pm
This proves that money is more important than the beautiful game itself. Were will the students celebrate afterwards knowing that the Stellenbosch cops has got it in for them.
3 Apr 2008, 13:48 pm

Stop blaming the Ikeys for your drinking problems. Maties are well-known boozers. Just go to Springbok pub and watch the game from there. Thats why the town is level, so you guys can get to bed safely at 2o’clock in the morning
3 Apr 2008, 13:49 pm
And you’ll not be celebrating anything anyway, just the usual Monday night afetr the weekend booze
3 Apr 2008, 13:57 pm

If you dont think the broderbond still runs the show then you have had the wool pulled over your eyes.I agree that the lights arent up to scratch-point taken.I dont buy your argument re TV.They can just broadcast it late as they did on Monday. Look ,if you get 7000 people at 14h30 on a Monday then imagine how many you will get at 16h00???The simple fact that on the VC commitee their is not one english speaking or Ikey present, thus naturally with one representitive present from Maties he is of course going to forward Maties case?No brainer-make sense. I agree that the facilities are better at Coetzenburg but jeez boet-it is sad that Stellenbosch always get their way.Imagine if you were an Ikey player-you would feel aggrieved as a home ground advantage is massive-no one can deny that.
3 Apr 2008, 14:06 pm
At least Ikeys now have an excuse for losing… your guys did well, though.
3 Apr 2008, 14:33 pm
YOU ALL MISS THE POINT.
HOW CAN YOU PLAY THE GAME ON A MICKEY MOUSE FACILITY LIKE GROOTE SCHUUR. Most school fields that are better than that dump.
It’s not only the lights but also there are no capacity!
7000 my….To get 2000 into there is allready a stretch.
To blame Stellenbosch for this is ludicrous. They got off their arses years ago and built a decent facility.
Play it at Newlands why dont you. It was UCT’S Intervarsity headquarters years ago anyway.
3 Apr 2008, 14:35 pm
22, Points taken Highlander
The DC facilities are way better than the UCT facilities – no flow in any direction on or off the Groote Schuur field, not even from the sports centre or their club/pub.
I would feel gutted as a UCT player – win the log win the semi and then no home final. But they battle lank internal prejudice against rugby also, unlike the Maties where its a weekday religion.
3 Apr 2008, 14:43 pm
Gaan die Ikeys nou weer klipgooi soos in die ou dae?
3 Apr 2008, 14:48 pm
And really: comparing the DUMP with LOFTUS. Try the other one!
3 Apr 2008, 15:08 pm
Charo # 15
You churning up memories of Inter-Varsity at Newlands with McCulley Workshop playing for the UCT supporters.
Bru, that was 1971!!!! I was in Standerd 6. It’s SOOOOOO crystal clear in my memmories. George Harrison had that triple album…”All Things Must Pass”, with the classic hit “My Sweet Lord”… and also the song, “What is Life”.
McCulleys did covers of those two Harrison songs. It was a blast.
Of course and the Buccaneer sang with a nasal twang!!
37 years ago!!!! F#cken Maties won that day. But UCT had the best party.
3 Apr 2008, 15:10 pm
Standard not standERD. Getting so excited my fingers are gooiing an Alonso or Kimi.
3 Apr 2008, 15:23 pm
Mmmmm…even better.
I prefer to win it with odds against us.
And a win in Maties back yard? Thats just sweet.
Besides I reside in this beautiful town, so no traffic worries.
Now to find myself a UCT tee, mine doesnt fit anymore!
3 Apr 2008, 16:12 pm
Its a disgrace to not have it at UCT, so what our lights aren’t good, delay the game (they did on monday) this shambles has left a sour taste in our mouths
3 Apr 2008, 16:15 pm
Highlander, you are damn right the Dutchmen control SA rugby. I heard Markgraaff is living in Stellenbosch and is still calling the shots, like he always did.
3 Apr 2008, 17:02 pm
what a joke….stellenbosch should not have the right to take the game to such low levels just to win a game.. If to think that the maties have nothing to do with this is naive.. just look at the province make up and the majority are from stellies well other players get turned the cold shoulder… rugby will never evolve if those morons maintain the power they have
3 Apr 2008, 17:09 pm
Maybe this will get UCT to finally upgrade their sports facilities,
for one of the top varsitys they are an absolute joke!
it is bull to be playing in stellies though.
why not make kickoff at 5 30 sun only dips behind the mountain around 6 anyways
3 Apr 2008, 17:18 pm
Its dark there already ~ 1715 now
Devil’s Peak gets between the sun and UCT, whereas the sun shines on Stellies all the time. Even their web-address is http://www.sun.ac.za
3 Apr 2008, 17:22 pm
Both teams can count themselves lucky to be in the final after very dubious penalties saving their asses in the last minute of both games.
3 Apr 2008, 17:24 pm
Have they sorted out their taal question yet at Maties – judging by comments some feel that the Broederbond HQ is still alive and kicking at Stellenbosch.
3 Apr 2008, 17:59 pm
lmfao @ Dust #20, that “town is level” line killed me.
i love this matie-ikeys banter. silly that they dont have the game at newlands, but on the upside i can walk to danie craven from my place.
wish i was still a student though, monday night drinking isn’t a good way to start a working week off.
heard lots of stories from my uct buddies about what they got up to during intervarsity in stellies, got my own stories too but from the matie side.
many many of my uct buddies have got stranded in stellenbosch after the game, babelaas, no money, can’t speak afrikaans and trying to get back to cape town on a sunday after sleeping on grass somewhere. it will at least be easier on a tuesday…
3 Apr 2008, 18:09 pm
An early kick off or newlands would clearly be better alternatives. just shows that the administrators are able to ruin the game no matter at what level the game is played. go ikeys!
3 Apr 2008, 18:19 pm
The Ikeys had a great series and it is a pity that they lost out on staging the final due to their bad facilities.
Having said that I think they have now reach the end of the road and Monday night’s match will be just one step too many for them. The Maties have a history of playing the matches that really count quite well.
3 Apr 2008, 19:21 pm
Ikeys must never forget that FNB and Steinhoff is controlled by ex maties .Have it at newlands. The last time it was there Ikeys got a big hiding.Actually when was the last time ikeys won intervarsity. The funny thing is that uct love to compare its self to Stellies but Stellies students could not give a hoot about UCT.Also stellenbosch is hardly that Afrikaans as it is made out to be.Stellembosch does not drop standards unlike the rumours out there about uct and thats why its campus is in better condition. There are loads of english speaking people in stellenbosch and the majority is bilingual.UCT have this mentality that irritates stellenbosch students as they come to the town and always want to cause trouble
3 Apr 2008, 21:11 pm
If anyone had any stupid notions of the Broederbond not being alive and in great health then it has rudely been dispelled by this insane decision. It has been and is right there in Matieland and the Varsity Cup Comm. and you can start with Fransie Pienaar(that is why he became ‘Bok captain like many others of his ilk). If the so-called principled UCT community had any self-respect they should protest this diabolical injustice by not playing this bastardised “Final” and not give the Maties the potential to be the champs and no-one will call them such.
#12 Please do not confuse Afrikaans speaking whites with the Dutch. Dutch people are liberal and fair minded but this bunch are as verkrampt now as they were 15 or more years ago and will still be verkrampt 50 years from now.
I will definitely not attend this game as it is a bastardised Cup Final.
Rugby, the code. is the loser and actions like these explain why Mallett was overlooked so often even during his playing days and today.
3 Apr 2008, 21:28 pm
what the hell. hope we (ikeys) give them a hiding. the only way to sort this out.
3 Apr 2008, 21:51 pm
#42 ET,
Why this hatred? You are allowing your hatred (most likely as the result of a deep inferiority complex against Afrikaans people)to influence your potential to think rationally.
But anyway,no one will miss you if you do not attend the finals. So please stay at home and sulk.
3 Apr 2008, 22:31 pm
Most normal rational people will read the above comment(#42) as putting the diabolical decision into historical perspective, but I guess you do not have the capacity to do so. Acordingly you see hatred behind every bush, reminiscent of reactions of many decades duration.
All that is being commented on is the continueity of such actions and where it emanates from.
Reveal the apparent hatred as to me protesting a game is principled and not an expression of hatred. If Western countries protest the impending Olympics is that an expression of hatred? They have a right to do so,don’t you think?
And who ever feels inferior to, as you claim, Afrikaans people? Certainly not me, not before not now and not ever.People are not better or worse than others they are just different because they have had less or more oppotunities, rightly or wrongly,in their experiences.
3 Apr 2008, 23:36 pm
ET,
Do you really believe that the decision to move the final to Stellenbosch is because the Afrikaners are running rugby in this country (#42? Do you also really believe that Francois Pienaar and many before him became Springbok captains because they were Afrikaners?
Have you ever heard of economics (in this case I am talking about maximal TV exposure for sponsors) and merit (Francois Pienaar did after all win a world cup as Springbok captain)and dont you think that these issues played a role in the decision (s) taken.
Open your eyes and stop being so scared of the Afrikaners and Broederbond.
4 Apr 2008, 00:17 am
uct and wp wanted the game live at newlands…. so why were they overridden and moved to Stellenosch, Robzim?
4 Apr 2008, 00:22 am
Your whole ‘economics’ argument falls absolutely flat when you consider that the Ikeys asked for Newlands to be the venue as their rightful home base. How, just how, would any contributer lose out economically if the ‘Final’ was played at night at Newlands.
BTW many white sportswriters have historically made all the points I have penned espcially the captains from Stel.,U. Pre., etc., so why not question their bona fides.
As for your demented claim of ‘being so scared of the Afrikaners and Broederbond’ you are arrogantly delusional, which I can accept is due to your questionable upbringing of questionable superiority.
I think that probably you are still hurt at historical events past and present in Zims. but that is not my problem because I am not a citizen of that country.
4 Apr 2008, 09:00 am
42-Isn’t it ironic that you resort to stereotypes and conspiracy theories? Always amazes me how the high-minded liberals aren’t so high-minded after all. I reckon your hysterical rantings about the Broederbond and the absolutely ridiculous comment re Francois Pienaar smacks of hatred and intolerance. I wonder if you have the guts to tell FP that he didn’t deserve his place in the WC team? Didn’t think so mate.
4 Apr 2008, 10:02 am
Sooooooo much bleating!!!!
Firstly: the final venues were set before the games actually even started! Even if stellenbosch didnt make it to the final and uct did it would have been at the DC Stadium anyway. Steinhoff wanted the final to be on campus and identified three seperate venues on Campus’s that had the right lights for a TV broadcast. Tukkies, Maties and Pukke. If either of those teams were to be in the final it would have been played there. So UCT knew from the start that they would NOT get the final at UCT, they were fine about it then, stupid to bleat about it now that they have ended up on top.
Secondly, Newlands cannot be the stadium for the final as it is waaaay too big. There is no way this match will be able to fill the stadium and a half empty stadium looking a bit like Ellispark when the First for Women Lions play there, would have killed the spirit of the game, which will have better spirit in a smaller stadium. It is a varsity game and as such would be better played at a varsity, nevermind this “Spiritual home” bull. My spiritual home is Mavericks VIP lounge but i still dont spend my time there.
If UCT wants the game to be at their home in the future they just have to win.. maybe they can use a bit of the R500k they will win, if they win, to upgrade their primary school standard field.
4 Apr 2008, 10:04 am
and watching a delayed game is a bit like kissing your sister/cousin… You get a bit of tongue, but you never get as excited as you should be. While this is something the UCT fans might be ok with, but personally, i am not!
