Bobes takes WP reins
2 Jul 2008
Gcobani Bobo has been awarded the Western Province captaincy for the remainder of the domestic season.
Ross Skeate led WP in their first two matches, but coach Allister Coetzee made it clear at the start of the season no final call on the captaincy had been made. Bobo returned to WP last week after training with the Springboks, and after one Absa Currie Cup game Coetzee has opted to give him the job.
“Ross is the now the vice-captain of the side,” Coetzee told keo.co.za. “I feel he has led the side with distinction in the last two games, but it was always planned that Gcobani would captain the side.
“Gcobani was captain of WP Schools, so in a sense him captaining the Currie Cup side now sees him coming full circle.”
Schalk Brits has captained WP before, but given that Peter de Villiers rates him as the third-best hooker in South Africa, Brits is effectively on standby should incumbent Bok hookers John Smit and Bismarck du Plessis break down with injury.
Bobo, who was also surplus to Bok requirement, said he was thrilled with the opportunity.
“It’s an honour and a privilege, but I’m just a facilitator,” he said. “Having guys like Ross, AJ Venter and Schalk Brits in the team will make my job easier.”
Only one change is made to the side that beat the Blue Bulls last Saturday with prop Wicus Blaauw getting his first start in the front row. Blaauw will front up to Free State’s Kobus Calldo in a crucial scrum-time battle.
“We’ve gone for a horse for courses approach,” said Coetzee, who’s expecting a physical onslaught this Saturday. “Wicus did well coming on last week and I feel he will lend more stability in the scrum first up.
“I’m not saying Schalk Ferreira is a poor scrummer, but I think he will be better utilised off the bench.”
There was an injury concern with flyhalf Willem de Waal leaving the training field early on Wednesday. Coetzee believes it is not serious and the former Free Stater should be fit to meet his old team-mates at Newlands.
WP – 15 Gio Aplon, 14 Tonderai Chavhanga, 13 Dylan Des Fountain, 12 Gcobani Bobo (c), 11 Wylie Human, 10 Willem de Waal, 9 Alastair Siegelaar, 8 AJ Venter, 7 Francois Louw, 6 Pieter Myburgh, 5 Ross Skeate, 4 Adriaan Fondse, 3 Brok Harris, Schalk Brits, 1 Wicus Blaauw.
Subs: Deon Fourie, Schalk Ferreira, Francois van der Merwe, Justin Melck, Paul Delport, Isma-eel Dollie, Morgan Newman.

#2 pinkfloyd:
that hop step pass of his needs to go, putting dewaal and backline under huge pressure…
2 Jul 2008, 12:25 pm
What’s the criteria this time Allister, Rastafarian background?
2 Jul 2008, 12:30 pm
#6 Sheriff: i think its leadership qualities
2 Jul 2008, 12:35 pm
#6 Sheriff: I personally think it’s because Bobo is so freegin fast…….. hehehe
2 Jul 2008, 12:36 pm
#2 pinkfloyd: You could be right there. I thought he was very impressive on Saturday.
2 Jul 2008, 12:37 pm
Did not see that one coming , If I recall Bobo was widely touted as a future WP and Bok capt at junior level where he Capt the side from the flanker position.
2 Jul 2008, 12:40 pm
#5 Gaz: Very much agree with that. The backs looked a lot better with Delport on the park!
AS is to slow, and that puts huge presure on the already slow De Waal!
2 Jul 2008, 12:40 pm
One thing this means is that its looks like it was communicated to Allistar that he wont be part of the bokke plans. Also great to see Blaauw starting , he looked the part on Saturday , well CC level anyway.

2 Jul 2008, 12:41 pm
why so many WP stories??
2 Jul 2008, 12:41 pm
Siegelaar, Delport…blah, blah, blah
When Conrad Hoffman returns from injury theabove mentioned will both be bench warming
2 Jul 2008, 12:46 pm
#15 The Insider:
Yes Conrad Hoffman = No 1
Alastair at 9 ; where did Allister Coetzee play in his rugby playing days?
The lad has a crisp pass tho in his defence.
2 Jul 2008, 12:46 pm
#7 mr_ruga_luva:
You may have a point there. Pls elaborate.
2 Jul 2008, 12:48 pm
#8 grootblousmile:
Look Bobo has reinvented himself in the Province setup, no doubt there, but to I think skipper is perhaps a season too early.
2 Jul 2008, 12:48 pm
#13 Pietman:

2 Jul 2008, 12:55 pm
#18 Sheriff: Bobo has done well this season…. have to admit that……………. if only he had more speed……. and his handling skills need to still improve a bit….
2 Jul 2008, 12:55 pm
seems to be lack of transformation in the forwards…the backline seems fit to represent the Flats.
no complaints from a sharks fan…
2 Jul 2008, 12:56 pm
#21 grootblousmile: If only he had more speed and better handling skills…. WOW, and this is for a centre!
yip…..give me anadda chance
2 Jul 2008, 13:00 pm
#21 grootblousmile:
Correct. His ball retention a bit better but distribution needs to be worked on.
It’s not that hard to address. Pass to the left 1000 times per day and then to the right.
2 Jul 2008, 13:00 pm
#14 greatest13gerber:
Ja, why no Valke stories?
I think Valke are going to show the Lions on Friday night…battle of East v West…and for once the East will win…
2 Jul 2008, 13:01 pm
#21 grootblousmile: i think its worse than saying if only a scrumhalf had a better pass or slightly quicker service, or a flyhalf having a relieving boot and fullback being comfortable under the high ball…
what you metioned needs improvement are vital primary fundamental skills for centres.
2 Jul 2008, 13:02 pm
#14 greatest13gerber:
By the way, rumour has it you are a “Senior Surveillance Officer”. Is that like the okes at the Lakeside Mall who loer into the women’s bathrooms? Cos that would be schweet, china.
2 Jul 2008, 13:02 pm
#26 Seven:
Thanks Seven. What are some of the other fundamental skills of 12 & 13?
Is there really a difference between 12 and 13 play?
2 Jul 2008, 13:03 pm
#21 grootblousmile:
2 Jul 2008, 13:04 pm
#25 Valkman: nooit my bru…earl rose on the wing, the biggest match winner ever…arguably the most talented footballer to turn out in the number 10 jersey every. The change will be made easily for him….whats the try scoring record? expect that to fall….
i think early might have to come back to province and make provisions for transformation
2 Jul 2008, 13:04 pm
Young Wikus Blaauw is one hell of a more promising prospect than Schalk Ferreira.
I really think Rassie and co. should lure Pat Barnard back to the Cape from overseas. There was talk of him potentially looking to play for England, but he hasn’t made their new squad.
Barnard would be the ideal purchase.
Moller and Mujati to start with Blaauw and Barnard in reserve. Far better than the props WP are currently fielding.
2 Jul 2008, 13:06 pm
#29 Vlakman: Hey……… forkkk u
2 Jul 2008, 13:06 pm
#28 Sheriff: you really want your 12 and 13 to have similiar skills….ideally you want the the 12 o have slightly better decision making while having swift distribution nd vision. outside should have pace and be able to have the vision to see the space and exploit it, ie being able to run the right lines. i believe 13 is also more difficult to defend.
am i wrong?
2 Jul 2008, 13:07 pm
#30 Seven: earl is needed as a fetcher in the province pack,
2 Jul 2008, 13:07 pm
#31 puff:
Ja, I think Pat Barnard is still waiting to qualify for England team, think that’s only next year.
2 Jul 2008, 13:09 pm
#32 grootblousmile:
Haha…chill boet, jy’s mos ‘n Brakpanner! Jy ken mos!
2 Jul 2008, 13:11 pm
Well done Bobo.
2 Jul 2008, 13:11 pm
#28 Sheriff: what sheriff all quiet on the western front?
2 Jul 2008, 13:12 pm
#37 King Shark: do you know if bobo still has his band?
used to play very ‘chilled’ out music
2 Jul 2008, 13:14 pm
#33 Seven:
What makes you think I know?
12 is also known as 2nd five-eight. 2nd fly half so that’s why 10 can play 12 but not always the other way around.
But yes 12 & 13 must have vision and distribution skills.
In other words, NZ playing Nono® at 12 is a slight deviation from normal players like Carter and Mauger. And even Bateman the new 12 at Crusaders.
2 Jul 2008, 13:17 pm
Stormers and Province captains make for an interesting combo:
Jean for Stormers
Bobo for Province
or BOBO for Province and JEAN for Stormers = Bobojean®
2 Jul 2008, 13:19 pm
#40 Sheriff: your question to me really was asking for answer as if i didnt know.
By the way, the basis of that is taken from th province rugby union where i have done my level 1 and 2 coaching exams.
i agree with you that 10 and 12 should be interchageable….FRANS STEYN!
also agree with nonu, i think his favourite option is the run, and relies more on off loads and breaking tackles than swift distribution.
Conrad Smith, Kahui, Ice are all excellent runners off the balls, and getting there angles right…perhaps with carter there thats why they can do it.
also forgetting brett, who is no slouch…
but i agree with the thinkning, think were on similar pages
2 Jul 2008, 13:20 pm
#20 grootblousmile: mmmm, diep.
2 Jul 2008, 13:21 pm
#41 Sheriff: nice…but if u were formaulating a wold/all star backline i think my 12 will be pretty decent at playing 10. Nonu couldnt play 10 unless it was for a bulls barbarians team that refused to kick the ball
2 Jul 2008, 13:21 pm
ok sorry, that type of team would never happen….bulls have to kick
2 Jul 2008, 13:23 pm
#43 Johnny T: Maar ek’s mos ‘n diepseun !
2 Jul 2008, 13:24 pm
2 Jul 2008, 13:25 pm
#41 Sheriff:
Now they just need to play Conrad Jantjes on the wing for the Stormers outside Gcobani Bobo…then the teamsheet will read BoboJantjes!
2 Jul 2008, 13:27 pm
#47 Johnny T:
2 Jul 2008, 13:28 pm
#31 puff: Ek stem saam oor Pat Barnard. Kom Rassie, haal uit daai tjekboek
2 Jul 2008, 13:29 pm
that happend when they played for the lions valkman
2 Jul 2008, 13:30 pm
#49 Valkman: Hulle is mos almal reeds swanger, so what’s the problem !
2 Jul 2008, 13:30 pm

2 Jul 2008, 13:45 pm
#4 st.a.t.w: Yes, I would still like Newman at 12, Bobo 13 and Fountain 11
2 Jul 2008, 13:47 pm
Tweede helfte gaan pure exhibition rugby wees.
2 Jul 2008, 13:51 pm
#67 katman: Ek wonder of Vlakman se Vlakke teen julle gespuis speel op Bosman-stadion ?
2 Jul 2008, 13:52 pm
#67 katman:
2 Jul 2008, 13:54 pm
#69 Valkman: So jy koop “wax” so in 5L kanne !!
2 Jul 2008, 13:55 pm

2 Jul 2008, 14:05 pm
Congratulations! I still think he can count himself unlucky to not have made the Springbok touring squad.
He was great in the second half of the S14 and he had a huge game against the Bulls on Saturday.

2 Jul 2008, 14:14 pm
#70 Andre_WP: Ek dink Des Fountain verdien nog ‘n kans of twee.

#131 grootblousmile: boeremusiek is great if it`s in the correct environment. i was at calvinia`s vleisfees in `97 and klipwerf was playing, the brannewyn was dirt cheap and it was a festive occasion with the enitire population of the hantam district windmeuling around the dancefloor.

2 Jul 2008, 15:50 pm
#142 sondebok: Did he expose his fuzz to the Fuzz ?
2 Jul 2008, 15:51 pm
#136 BuckT: Well, knowing Wilko aint no alko, maybe he`s got some other poison we don`t know about. Maybe his chemist is dallaglio, who has a history of peddling narcotics before his rugby day`s.
2 Jul 2008, 15:53 pm
……I don’t have any Benoni Country Maplotter music either……… can’t stand the **** !
2 Jul 2008, 15:53 pm

2 Jul 2008, 15:59 pm
#154 BuckT: I get back on the second weekend of august. I`m gonna play at Simola when we pass through Knysna.
#153 Valkman: Definitely not a laxative, judging by the kicking style.
2 Jul 2008, 16:03 pm
#157 sondebok: enjoy, it’s a great course…what about pinnacle point or the other courses in the area?
2 Jul 2008, 16:05 pm
Bobes?
Jeez, I hope none of his mates call him that.
Would someone PLEASE ask all coaches and “journos” to stop killing this wildly overused “horses for courses” cliché ****?
2 Jul 2008, 16:05 pm
#158 BuckT: It would be nice to play pinnacle point as well, but I suppose I need to spend some quality time with the wife too
Knysna is the place where it all started for us, and where we got engaged.
2 Jul 2008, 16:06 pm
2 Jul 2008, 16:09 pm
#159 thefeather:
Ja, seems like they’re always trying to either add an “o” or an “s” for then nickname, i.e. “Smitto”, “Skeato”, “Bobes”, “Juano” etc.
Just call me Valko.
2 Jul 2008, 16:10 pm
#163 Valkman: Rock me Amadeus!
2 Jul 2008, 16:12 pm
#163 Valkman: without the V. Alko.
2 Jul 2008, 16:12 pm
#163 Valkman: It seems to work in a sick it-just-sounds-right kinda way with the Ozzies, but Juano (isn’t that a bird dropping?), Smitto, Butcho, Beasto just don’t seem to go down that well.
What shall we call Watermelon Watson then?
Aaah, I know… Useless!
2 Jul 2008, 16:12 pm
#162 grootblousmile: Living from hand to beer to mouth, I see. Mooi so!
2 Jul 2008, 16:14 pm
So does that mean Aplon’s first name is actually Gi?
2 Jul 2008, 16:18 pm
#166 thefeather:
Hey, leave Luke alone – he looks just like an oke I gym with!
2 Jul 2008, 16:20 pm
#169 Valkman: Does your oke also walk too far away from his arms and hang around the back of rucks looking frightened?
2 Jul 2008, 16:22 pm
#168 thefeather: Will Kank be playing this weekend? lol
#163 Valkman: And what about Os, or is he the man without a name??
2 Jul 2008, 16:23 pm
Force Valk Five, out!
2 Jul 2008, 16:25 pm
#171 KingPaul: Ha ha ha, nice one.
Os qualifies cos he has an O and an S. Legendary stuff. The commentators would have to go silent for a split second just before they say his surname every time.
2 Jul 2008, 16:28 pm
#163 Valkman: Only guy who can get away with that is Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem) in No Country for Old Men. When he calls you friendo you meekly pee down your leg and think of all the things you never got round to doing.
2 Jul 2008, 16:39 pm
#166 thefeather: We can call Twatson “Melanoma”………. it’s mos a type of cancer……..
2 Jul 2008, 18:08 pm
#166 thefeather:
It’s actually Butchie! And Watson is just “that arrogant Tool”
2 Jul 2008, 20:18 pm
#176 Butch James 4 president: love the name….
and arrogant tool is pretty close….he must have a little bit of self loving sessions as well, so i’d be inclined to throw in wanker!
3 Jul 2008, 12:00 pm
This is BRILLIANT news. Couldnt of happened to a nicer guy. Gcobani is playing the best rugby of his career, and is very unlucky not to have gone to NZ with the Boks for the Tri-Nations.
A great choice for WP Captain.
4 Jul 2008, 05:56 am
Go Bobo.He has come a long way since leading WP in the Craven Week as Flanker. He wont let provice down!
Have your say
