South Africa slumped to their third consecutive defeat as England took an unassailable 3-0 lead to clinch the ODI series.
Stand in skipper Jacques Kallis won the toss and elected to field. Openers Ian Bell and Matt Prior got off to a flying start for England as they brought up the 100 partnership in just 96 balls before Prior finally fell for 33.
South Africa then started to come back into the contest around the half way mark in the innings taking three quick wickets including danger man Kevin Pietersen.
But with Pietersen gone, Andrew Flintoff took on the added responsibility as he played brilliantly for his 78*, while Samit Patel chipped in with a solid 31 to help lead England to 296-7 off their 50 overs.
In response the Proteas got off to a slow start and were pegged back early when Herschelle Gibbs fell in the sixth over for just 12. Hashim Amla played steadily, but when he fell for 46 the writing was on the wall.
Kallis was once again off the pace as he went for just nine and no one was able to muster any sort of resistance as the wickets continued to fall at regular intervals.
In the end England were a far superior outfit, wrapping up the game with some fine bowling including a brilliant personal performance for Patal, picking up 5-41.
England – 296-7.

South Africa -170 all out.
Hashim Amla 46, Samit Patel 5-41, Andrew Flintoff 2-33.

Sorry to sound negative but with all 4 of the england seamers well quicker than Steyn & Morkel, I doubt that we’ll come close…really hope I am wrong!

20 dorff – Steyn has been struggling to hit the 90mph mark throughout the tour, which Flintoff & Harmisson have been able to bowl at will during the tests and well beyond during the ODI’s. Morkel is slightly quicker that Steyn but not as quick as Broad has been in the ODI’s. I was under the impression that Steyn & Morkel are 2 genuine pace bowlers on the international front but the english bowlers are a step ahead, at least in the pace dept. In saying that, if the poms keep this lineup going, they would have the strongest pace attack in world cricket for the next few years.

kerneels, morkel might have had 1 ball at 93mph, but on average well below the pace of Harmisson & Flintoff…same as Steyn in the previous 2 ODI’s…

Don’t you guys think we are really missing Pollock? Even though he lost pace he tied up one end which meant the batsment had to attack the other and had more chance of losing a wicket. With this attack the batsmen just score at will.
I also cant remember when last our tail was so blady long, Boucher batting at 6?
Mckenzie needs to be in this ODI side in place of Gibbs and to captain. He is solid and that is what we need now.

I think that you guys lost it in the first 15 overs with Ntini bowling his usual garbage. He’s been a good servant but time he went. On the pace issue, I think that Morkel has slowed his down because of the side strain but Morkel and Steyn are great prospects. Remember they’re both much younger than Harmison and Flintoff while Broad looked ordinary in the tests.
Also if Kallis could hit it off the square, Broad’s figures would have been a lot worse as he bowled a lot of rubbish outside of off-stump which Kallis left. Kallis’s one day days look gone to me.

Steyn, Ntini and Morkel! Whats the difference? We needed someone like Polly who manages the economy rate well under 4.
It seems the lost of Ryan McLaren will be a major blow!

I still feel that Steyn should be kept ONLY for tests and he can bowl full and take wickets in tests but in ODI he would go for plenty!

The Proteas cannot ‘multi-task’.If they a good 5 day team,one day
performances suffer and vice versa.Why are only the Aussies able to
do both equally well?

The Aussies are both mentally and physically very fit! Also they have only 1 aim – to win the game! They would go to any extent to win it…South Africans wont play dirty games to do it…
Also the current SAF team or upcoming SAF players can never match the fitness levels of Late Hansie’s team, i.e., Hansie, ‘FIT’ Kallis, Klusener, Symcox, Rhodes. They were the army trained athletes!
We seriously need to improve our fitnesses or else be prepared for serious downfall.
