Bok heavies ruled out
17 Nov 2008
Bismarck du Plessis and Gurthro Steenkamp have failed to recover from their respective injuries and will miss Saturday’s Test at Twickenham.
The news was confirmed on Monday by Springbok coach Peter de Villiers. Du Plessis sustained a grade two hamstring tear early in Saturday’s game against Scotland while Steenkamp limped off with a sprained ankle in the second half. Both players will head back to South Africa prompting a reworking of South Africa’s front row dynamics.
Captain John Smit will revert to hooker and at this stage it looks like Jannie du Plessis is the prime candidate for the starting tighthead position. The Sharks No 3 is already in London and looks set to leapfrog Brian Mujati who is nursing a bruised shoulder. Chiliboy Ralepelle will cover Smit off the wood, and De Villiers is confident Mujati will be ready to wrestle the Poms, if not in a starting capacity, then as an impact player from the bench.
England produced a shaky showing against the Wallabies at Twickenham, but De Villiers is adamant the home pack will provide a challenge this Saturday.
“I thought England dominated the collisions against Australia and I was not surprised to see the Aussie scrum doing so well,” said the Bok coach. “England didn’t bind well at the scrum initially, but after that, they were good.
“On the game this week, every team becomes more motivated because they want to beat the No 1.”
Fourie du Preez was a late withdrawal from last week’s match in Edinburgh, but De Villiers confirmed he is responding to treatment and will be reassessed later in the week. Du Preez has been doing some light cycling to rehabilitate his injured quad, and the Boks are hopeful that their star scrumhalf will be fit to face England.

#98 capebull: I like my 7 for that… but I get your point. Our 7 is your 6

#90 RugbyRulz:
Frans is starting to play much better rugby than he was a year ago and although he does some real STUPPEED things on the field, you always get the feeling he is under control and is prepared to give it 100%.
We could have :
15 – Frans/Conrad
14 – Speis/Brian
13 – JF/Adi
12 – JDV/steyn
11 – JPP
10 – Ruan/Butch/Grant
9 – FDP/ruan/Ricky

Agred, we are merely speculating with accommodating spies and kanko in the same starting 15. would have to prove himself at the S14
17 Nov 2008, 16:58 pm
#92 Kerneels: You certainly need experience to play 8th man. That was the problem with Spies a while ago and thats what makes Kanko good. If you are SURE he hasn’t played there I might rethink. But if he has had ANY game time there, I’d think about the move to #8.

Funny that not many have got time for Botes and Deysel (or Daniel), particularly as the Sharkies dominated the CC with these players and Kanko. But in fact I think all the players mentioned are good enough with the right super coaching and understanding of how they must remain glued together in the tighter exchanges.
One of the Bok strengths is their cover defence, led by Schulk. Quite a few times in the last 2 games it looked like a Scotty or Welshman was through only to be dragged down by some desperate covering.

Juan played 8 in 2003 WC , he has no hands behind the scrum, thats why you hardly ever see him pass. Big joke was the best in that department , but he did not like to hit rucks 10 times per game.
Intersting facts S14 final 2007
Rucks Turnovers
Kanko 4 2
Spies 9 4

As a Sharks supporter, I would venture to say that International level is one step to much for botes but for Deysel…it’s a sure thing. The boykie is awesome and is the immidiate replacement for Juan smith imo

This is actually not such a bad thing, the doctor is a good TH and smit should play at 2 if at all. front row looks balanced, fdp back means we can leave out jauarie from the bench and have sh cover in pienaar with steyn going to 10 if we need cause of injury. otherwise pienaar plays the whole game as does fdp, and we bring on steyn and jacobs/fourie when and where we need to.
1 – beast
2 – smit
3 – jannie
4 – bakkies
5 – matfield
6 – schalk
7 – juan
8 – spies
9 – fdp
10 – pienaar
11 – habana
12 – jdv
13 – fourie/adi
14 – jpp
15 – jantjies.
16 – mujati
17 – chilli
18 – bekker
19 – kanko
20 – danie
21 – steyn
22 – adi/fourie
if the matchday is very different to that I am going to be angry.

Where are the S14 squads for next season for the SA side.
17 Nov 2008, 17:13 pm
#113 Inevitable: Fear? No. School boys fear NOTHING. You get typical HARD SA school boys. I am closer to school than some of you older guys. When I was there there was no FEAR.
But thats not the point. Its PHYSICS. 105kg Spies running at the pace of a wing at a 80kg (or less) wing. Small step, and the tackler is off balance. That IS going to SUCK talking him. And if WILL hurt the smaller guy.

Mujati Chilli Bekker – sounds like a McDonalds ‘over-size me’ meal.
38-18 England.
BTW, only 6 Wp on tour and they’ve been included every match. Time to give others a chance?
17 Nov 2008, 17:43 pm
#28 capebull: Jy ken die storie agter stats ne? Spies het sy eerste half goeue game van die jaar gehad, nou loop jy weer met ‘n semi rond. Hy is nie yster wat julle almal dink hy is nie. My fok man, hy maak dan sy oe toe as hy iemand moet tackle.
17 Nov 2008, 17:44 pm
#28 capebull:
In NH conditions it wouldn’t be wise to accommodate Spies and Kanko in the same team, even with a specialist fetcher.
I know its inexperienced but I still reckon a trio of Deysel, Kanko and Brussouw would be BRILLIANT! Providing Kanko was prepared to play slightly tighter.
There would be plenty of hunger in that loose trio!
17 Nov 2008, 17:52 pm
Bekker is ‘n windgat passassier !
Hoop Fourie du Preez is reg om te speel !

#126 grootblousmile:
One was always taught to tackle the legs and with Bekker you simply can’t miss
The bigger they are the harder they fall too.
Agree that Bekker is a passenger. Last week he made one ‘steal’ on a line out but zip else. Certainly no replacement for Bakkies. Mind you bakkies seems to be packing a bit around his butt these days. Quite shocked on Saturday. Maybe the ‘English Breakfast’ is to his liking? – cant be the excuse for hamburgers or hot dogs there.
17 Nov 2008, 18:35 pm
#127 OCO: Bekker is muck. ALways has been, he’s soft and gets selected for odd reasons…
17 Nov 2008, 18:45 pm
Play Kankowski against England and that will be the end of the saga, you want to go backwards and slip tackles worse than against Scotland and Wales, play Flash Gordon at No.8
17 Nov 2008, 18:48 pm
#129 tjokvol: There are far more serious issues than personal choices for Kanko or not don’t you think?
17 Nov 2008, 19:03 pm
#28 capebull: tackles made?
17 Nov 2008, 19:27 pm
#131 SodaJoe: Hi SodaJoe. Not so good with the rugga on Sat. The guys look tired. Lots of injuries now too. Not sure if we can beat England this weekend if we played like last Sat. Also hope we have a better ref. If only we could have a SH ref. Ab’s been lucky they have had Saffa refs and again this Sat they have Kaplan.
17 Nov 2008, 19:40 pm
“Beat the No.1″? What are you talking about PdV, I presume it was a slip up and you mean to say “Beat the world cup holders”. We are certainly not number one, and on current and Tri Nations display’s don’t deserve to be No.2 either.
17 Nov 2008, 22:00 pm
Bring in CJ..
18 Nov 2008, 01:43 am
Go the Boks, World Champs!! gona demolish england. Chokers going to choke against wales. CHOKERS CHOKERS CHOKERS!! HAHA
18 Nov 2008, 04:29 am
I hope you guys can beat the Poms too, I know the Wallabies are not the most popular team for many Saffas but I will still support a SH team over the north any day of the week. good luck guys
