PdV: Boks can be better

Peter de Villiers was pleased with the Springboks 3-0 result in the UK but admitted improvements can be made ahead of the British & Irish Lions series.

The Boks failed to impress against Wales or Scotland recording narrow victories in each Test, but the game at Twickenham was a one-sided affair with South Africa running out 42-6 victors. What the scoreline failed to reflect was the opportunities coughed up by England given they dominated possession and disrupted the Boks at the set-phases.

De Villiers commended South Africa’s defence, but admitted they could have been more accurate on attack.

“It’s always tough to come over here, and they did put us under a lot of pressure. But I think we could have scored more tries,” he said.

“There are seven pillars that we build our game around. At Twickenham, two of those pillars were brilliant. We were brilliant with ball in hand and we were brilliant without ball in hand.”

De Villiers still believes the Boks are some way from realising the objective of playing total rugby. One thing’s for certain, they’ll need to be far better in the tight exchanges when they square up to the Lions pack next June.

“We didn’t control everything today. That’s the next challenge for us.

“I suppose when you look at the five tries, we’ll take it. I still think we could have constructed a few more tries by playing direct and then taking it wide, but we’ll take this result.”

    Other than that i think PDV is a stright up person,says what he thinks which can get him in trouble.
