Gits keen on French fling
27 Nov 2008
Wallabies playmaker Matt Giteau is looking to be released from his national contract and hopes to be playing club rugby in France before 2011.
According to French newspaper Midi Olympique, Giteau wants a short-term release to experience the competitions in Europe. Thereafter he hopes to return to the Wallabies squad as they build towards the 2011 World Cup.
“After the tour, I am going to discuss with the federation to see if it will authourise me to get some experience in France like what the NZRU did with Dan Carter,” Giteau said. “It would be fantastic. I adore your country [France], your way of life, your food, the croissants at breakfast.”
Giteau did not specify which year he would play abroad, but is currently contracted by the Australian Rugby Union up until and including the World Cup.
Whether coach Robbie Deans is willing to part with his star player is another story, as the Wallabies have made great strides in 2008 since losing George Gregan and Stephen Larkham at the end of 2007.

Not sure if Giteau’s style is best suited for the French scene.

#9 King Shark: Have some sympathy for the poor Ozzies. They did not have Gregan, Larkham, Latham or Rathbone availble this year.
Those are some big shoes to fill. The Ozzies did reasonably well considering but did not have the backline power of previous years.
BTW I can not see Habana, De Villiers or Steyn still playing in SA when the next WC comes.
Have your say
