MCG motivates Proteas

Graeme Smith says his side can’t wait to play in front of a capacity crowd on the opening day of the second Test in Melbourne on Friday.

The MCG ranks alongside Lord’s and Eden Gardens as one of the dream venues to play a Test. However, the Proteas have never won a Test in Melbourne and will need to make history again if they hope to wrap up the series with a match remaining.

“We have had three of the toughest tours this year with India, England and now here,” said Smith. “We drew in India, we won in England and, if we can close off this series here in Australia, it will be an incredible performance for this team and probably the most successful season ever for South African cricket. That is what we have the chance to achieve and to beat Australia in Australia is something everybody would like to have in their career.

“As a sportsman, a Boxing Day Test is one of those great occasions. We will obviously discuss a few things and be as well prepared as we can from that side but on the day it is a motivation to perform well. There is no greater occasion to perform well.”

The South African captain said it was also a chance to reflect on his own life and career and the changes he had gone through since his last tour to Australia in 2005.

“It is nice to come back here and see how far I have progressed in my life and my career and how things have changed,” said Smith, who is playing with a chronic elbow injury.

“Mentally you look forward to coping with it as best you can. Fortunately I have been batting well through it and I have been able to adapt my game quite well. But it is something that we need to deal with in the longer run because I can’t keep treating it like this over a long period of time, so we need to plan the way forward. At the moment our focus is purely on this Test match and we don’t want anything to get in the way of that.”

Smith also commented on the pressure the Australian team has been subjected to since Perth.

“I was surprised at some of the media reports and statements after the test match. It wasn’t something I expected. Having played against Australia for some time they are always composed and well directed, so it did come as a surprise. But it does not affect our preparation or the way we think. They have picked a formidable team for this test match and they will come out to play an aggressive game and take the game to us, so we will have to be focused and ready.

“We put our peg in the ground at Perth and we have made them respect us a huge amount as we do respect them. But from a psychological aspect we know we have got a lot more petrol in our tank. It took something special to win the test match and I expect much the same again with a pretty even contest.”

– Ashwell Prince, South Africa’s other casualty with a cracked thumb, had a try out in the nets on Wednesday and a decision on his availability will be taken after Christmas Day’s practice.

    I remember 2005.

Australia were 254/9 in the first innings. Hussey on about 40. Went on to share a 101 run 10th wicket partnership with the ‘ultimate bunny’ McGrath after Kallis dropped a sitter with the score on about 261.

We dominated day 1 in every test match that tour.

I doubt it – Biff has instilled mental fortitude and determination in the team that will be hard to shake, and he and Arthur have been at pain to encourage humility after Perth. Having said that, the Oz have had the wood over us for so long that, as a supporter I’m perpetually afraid that the next wicket will trigger one of those collapses we’re so famous for.

Mitchel Johnson will be receiving a bill for under-garment wear and tear directly.

Actually there was a shortlist which included Gandhi, Buddha, Mandela, Trevor Quirk, amongst others, which I whittled down by eliminating those that were too cheesy, obvious or prone to derision. To be honest – it was coin toss between my current nic and Trevor Quirk.

I would suggest a similar scientific approach.

The curator at the MCG has already declared that the pitch will offer more to the seamers than the tweakers. Considering the talk about the lack of a holding bowler to be the foil to Lee’s strike bowling, I’d guess it’s probably going to be Hauritz (who is a holding spinner) for the dropped Krezja, and Hilfenhaus (swing bowler) for Siddle. Watson for Symonds if his knee is still dodgy.

While the MCG may be a ‘special place’, it’s a very ordinary cricket-watching venue.

I went across the last time we were here, did the Boxing Day thing along with 80,000 others and while the atmosphere was special, it’s just too big a ground for good cricket viewing. Most spectators are up in the heavens, miles from the action, straining to see a small red ball whizz through the air at about 145kph.

It’s virtually impossible to follow the ball and were it not for the big replay screens, I’d have seen pretty much zero of the day’s play.

Great venue it may be, but cricket was never meant to be watched in such vast theatres. Game simply does not lend itself to Eden Parks, MCGs, if you’re there to watch the cricket rather than get caught up in the atmosphere.

Merry Christmas, everyone…and may the Proteas add to Ricky’s misery over the next five days.

    Team news
Despite all the talk of potential personnel changes, Australia have made only one alteration to the side that lost in Perth. The offspinner Nathan Hauritz has taken the place of the axed Jason Krejza, with Peter Siddle holding his position ahead of Ben Hilfenhaus for his first Test at his home ground in Melbourne. A knee problem hampered Andrew Symonds in the field in Perth but the problem was not considered serious enough for him to be rested for the second Test.

South Africa have named the same side that earned the remarkable win at the WACA. The only question-mark was over the fitness of Ashwell Prince, whose cracked thumb kept him out of the Perth line-up. Prince was making good progress but was not considered quite ready for a return at the MCG and his replacement JP Duminy, who struck the winning runs on his Test debut, has proven a more than capable Test No. 6.

Well don’t you look silly. The pagan festival you refer to is either the Yule or the worship of Mithras. Both these events took place when they did because people celebrated the longest day. This year Christmas was about 2 days out from the longest day. Pretty hard to get it correct 3000 years ago and our calendar does not exactly match the events in our solar system as intended.

Yes Christians did take over the day. This was logical in the elimination of pagan festivals and as a natural substitution of holidays.

I am an atheist and I am not a fan of the commercial side of Christmas but it is human nature to celebrate days of predetermined significance. Check out some of the other holidays we have. They don’t really compare to the customs and traditions behind Christmas. I think even if belief in ***** as the son of God stopped in 2009, it wouldn’t stop Christmas Day in 2009 or in years to come.

Good luck with your polemics but this is not the place for it.

what exactly is all this hoo hah hullabaloo about on the 25th day of December all about

the earth rotates around the sun just as every other day, so c’mon I’d like your atheistic view on why everyone goes cracker bang bonkers on this day or the 1st of January for that matter, or any other fictitious day of celebration you would like to hold more special than the next or the last one?

If you believe the press, this is Hayden’s last chance saloon. Thing is, he’s scored a hundred in 6 of the last Boxing Day tests (at the MCG), and averages over a 100 at the ground.

But then, I believe Kallis also averages 100 at the MCG…

What on earth is there to celebrate other than you are here breathing in this body on this planet for as long as it takes for you to get between birth and death, what you do with your time in between is really what counts.

All this other celebratory hullabaloo is absolute fictitious jargon and is only there to befuddle and bamboozle you into believing some days are more auspicious than the next.

Absolute nonsense, but if you believe Dec 25th is more valuable than Dec 29th for example, than be my guest, after all Dec. 21st is the longest SH or shortest NH day, so if you have to go and crack open a few Carlings rather do it then.

Not so sure. Also think it affects the pitch. Not sure. Just hope we don’t watch for 5 days and its a draw. That will be frustrating.

you see how they all try warn you about this one or that one, that you must stay away from them, just like they tell you to stay away from Luke or his dad

you know how it goes, those that belong to clubs and tribes, they feel secure in their numbers and in the backslapping camaraderie

when anyone challenges that false status quo they all get their fangs out to try and eradicate the moegoe from the garbage heap

But the problem is the moegoe may know them better than they even know themselves, even though they think its them that has all the knowledge

Just like Socrates, and *****, and Francis of Assisi, and Mohamed, and Zoroaster, and Abraham and so many others, it is always the ‘Tribe’ that like to think they have the power to excommunicate or eradicate, because when some truth is spoken in their midst they cannot handle it, it becomes too much pain to recognize the fallacy of it all, so the very first instinct is for them to try and rid themselves of the focal point of their oblivion

Because after all they prefer to remain hoodwinked and blind to some very salient, non negotiable and simple truths, that ritualistic celebrations are hardly important in the greater scheme of things.

Same with rugby, it has very little relevance in the ultimate equation, but we come to participate in some nonsensical debate about it, ultimately it hardly makes any difference one way or the other about how good or bad a person you are.

The problem with old skoppie here is that in his own blinkered eyes he is infallible, and thinks he’s always right. Everyone else has it wrong, apparently

Only problem is, no matter how much he believes in his own views (and his alone), he is the one trying to convince everyone the world is flat and not round. A totally pointless crusade if you ask me.

But I have always just ignored you. Today it was just a little too much what you had said in your posts here. You don’t respect Christmas but you know we all do that come on here. Why do you keep coming onto this site when you are banned? You have no respect for yourself or anyone else. You are just a little too pathetic to even speak too. How anyone here can say the respect and want to speak to you it is beyond me. You are a complete utter fool and a waste of space and you know it. Go and crawl into your lonely little hole. You pathetic little bitter and twised man. If you don’t respect Christmas then don’t bother to speak to people who do. Now try and creep upto the ones that show you just a little respect. Thats what you do creep. Mental case you are.

at least it seems you have enough sense to hold some little bit about your indoctrinations in reserve before make false sweeping judgments on others, not that I can say the same for most of your blogging mates on here.

The infinitesimal amount of information you may have picked up about me (and it goes the same for anyone here) from my participation on this blog site hardly gives you nor anyone any real handle by which to judge anyone at all.

No I have not googled your christian website, I may or may not do, but it would if anything be purely out of some passing interest to see where you equate your humanness from.

I am already well sorted, as you may hardly be aware of my actual state of mind or my state of being, some of you people honestly believe you can deduce fact from fiction or truth from fallacy from some debate on a blog site

your frame of references are so minutely limited you would not be able to recognize such falsity or truth even if it bit you in the backside

As an example, if you, the devout Christian that you are, were to met JC today face to face, I am almost certain without much doubt, you may be one of the very first to either call for his head again, or else cast him into a lunatic asylum post haste, because I will tell you frankly and categorically, he will most definitely not be coming here again to appease your limited sense of sanity or enlightenment, nor will he be coming in the garb you might think he will be in some burning bright chariot or other, he may surprise you so confoundedly, you will be forced to reassess all that holy indoctrinated Christianity all over again.

That is if you are fortunate enough even to recognize him at all.

Now thats it, enough confounded religious debate for this 25th of December 2008, after all its just another day in the cycle of this universe.
