Mujati concern for Stormers
7 Jan 2009
A shoulder injury incurred on the Springboks’ UK tour could rule Brian Mujati out of the Stormers’ warm-up fixture against Saracens.
Head coach Rassie Erasmus told keo.co.za Mujati’s involvement in the 25 January fixture is ‘touch and go’ at present. The tighthead injured his shoulder against Scotland last November, but still played off the bench against England the very next week.
The Boks were at that stage facing a front row crisis, with Gurthro Steenkamp and Bismarck du Plessis sent home due to injury. Nevertheless, the Stormers may begin the 2009 season without their first-choice No 3.
“The Boks didn’t recognise it as a serious injury right away and I think that was the problem,” Erasmus said. “We will wait until he has recovered fully before considering him for Saracens.”
Erasmus said Conrad Jantjes (groin), Schalk Burger (ankle) and Willem de Waal (hand) are all battling niggling injuries. The good news is players like Gcobani Bobo, Adriaan Fondse and AJ Venter have shown significant progress since succumbing to serious injuries at the end of last season.
The Stormers coach believes his second season in charge will be different as he has wealth of experience to draw on. The Cape franchise were hit by injuries towards the end of the 2008 competition, and the lack of depth was an issue.
The Stormers have also altered their pre-season programme with two friendlies scheduled for late January.
“Time will tell whether it was a good decision to opt for warm up games against both and Saracens and Boland,” said Erasmus. “If we can avoid serious injuries in those games, then I’ll be happy.
“On the other hand I’m glad that we have two games before the season starts. I feel our match fitness was a bit off at the start of last year’s competition, and we only started to show good match fitness from games two and three.”
Erasmus will meet with Bok coach Peter de Villiers on 13 January to discuss various issues including the management of top Test players during the Super 14. The final Stormers squad of 34 is due to be announced on 19 January.

JC perhaps you can help here.
In the latest SA Rugby magazine someone from HSM penned an article: “Progression in Perspective” or something or not.
Can’t remember the author now, but in this story quite a bit was made by the author of the ‘apparent’ injury Mujati picked up whereas he believed rushing BJ into the starting line-up against the Poms was just a way for De Villiers to hide the inadequecies of Mujati or Peter realising his mistake…
Help me with the author of that article please.
I think I have a nice letter to write the judge@hsm and perhaps win some booze in doing so…

The Super 14 teams of the Cheetahs and the Sharks will play one another on January 24 next year in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Sport promoter Willem Strauss confirmed that the two South African franchises have accepted the invitation to play a Super 14 warm-up game in Abu Dhabi. This is the first time a Super 14 warm-up game will take place in Abu Dhabi.

So he is not going to play in a meaningless warm up game. The first choice players hardly ever do. I just can’t believe that Rassie hasn’t bought a few better front rowers in the off season.

Piy their backline at times is amongst the most exciting to watch. Rassie, being a wylie old dog, surprises me in not buying some big boys. Even worth getting Visagie from the pension barracks if it means he could hold the scrum steady.
Any takers on an Australian (aka Baa Baa) style tactic of front rowers being injured ergo uncontested scrums in the first 4 games of S14 for the stormers?
7 Jan 2009, 14:25 pm
#138 pedspin: WP has used those tactics before.
7 Jan 2009, 14:25 pm
#129 SpringbokSarah:
I’m not suggesting Rene injured him, but just most players have a niggle here and there. His = the groin.
No wonder he broke up with Tammy Fortuin – spending too much time with the physio.

7 Jan 2009, 14:47 pm
#136 SpringbokSarah: interesting buy that…Rassie is pretty astute so lets wait and see…personally dont understand the percy and aj buys…or for that matter willem de waal!
7 Jan 2009, 14:52 pm
Last year I remember the Stormers had also 2 warm-ups and they were not match-ready for the first match. There matches was not again good opposition and I think they are again going to struggle in their first match!
Rassie now says: The Stormers have also altered their pre-season programme with two friendlies scheduled for late January.
This is not correct as this will be the same preparation then last year!
7 Jan 2009, 14:52 pm
#151 grant10:
willem de waal wasnt a bad buy (until he started playing, that is),
percy .. well percy could add much needed experience when needed
aj … i remember an instance last year (cc) where aj had to sprint 10 m for a try .. the whole bench (including rassie) were cheering him, and laughing their asses off when he actually made it … which (i think) proves that especially rassie knew that aj was on his last legs when he contracted him, and that for me is a problem cause i really cant see any positives that aj bring to the team!

#91 It is just a game: The answer is simple – Mujati is NEVER the 2nd best no 3 in SA.
PDV is caught out (as was Jake) by picking players on colour and then post rationalising their inclusion on perfromance. But when the going gets tough – he calls Jannie.
When the pressure is on – transformation goes out the window – no matter whether the coach is black, white, pink or green

Jannie best bet for Twickers
Posted in JC on tour by JC
Jannie du Plessis must start at Twickenham if the Springboks are to have any hope of besting the English scrum.
Multiple front-row injuries have cut short the John Smit-tighthead experiment, and now there is talk of Brian Mujati having a sore shoulder. Du Plessis was recently called to London as his brother Bismarck and prop Gurthro Steenkamp were simultaneously released from the Bok camp. Du Plessis is likely to face one of the world’s premier looseheads in Andrew Sheridan this Saturday, and from the vibe gathered at Monday’s press conference, the Boks are feeling confident about the match up.
A World Cup winner in 2007, Du Plessis was deemed surplus to Bok requirements in 2008. He received a recall against Australia for the Ellis Park Test when CJ van der Linde was suspended and BJ Botha had left for Ireland, and did a solid job. This was on the back of a strong showing with his new Super 14 franchise, the Sharks. Many felt he was an unfortunate omission when the Boks’ UK touring squad was announced given the nature of the game up north and how Du Plessis’s strengths would be valuable.
If the Bok management pick Du Plessis to start this Saturday, it’s a sure acknowledgment of his value in northern conditions. Mujati has battled for the better part of the year, and does not boast the technical experience that comes with winning three Currie Cups and a World Cup winners medal. Mujati may be more mobile than Du Plessis, but it is the latter who will make the greater impact at the tight-phases. Up north, you need to favour set-phase proficiency over athleticism. Jake White applied this logic when playing Danie Rossouw at No 8 in last year’s World Cup, and look what came from that decision.
The question will be raised that if Mujati is fit enough to warm the bench this weekend, why isn’t he fit enough to start? The troubling answer may also point to another question as to whether he deserved a squad place ahead of seasoned specialists like Van der Linde, Botha and Du Plessis.
The same applies for Bulls hooker Chiliboy Ralepelle. If your first-choice hooker is injured, surely you’d back your second choice to slot in. It’s become accepted that Smit fulfills the hooking duties in the event of injury as he did last week, but if Smit is really supposed to concentrating on prop and Ralepelle is truly the understudy to Bismarck du Plessis, then why shouldn’t Ralepelle start this weekend? Smit’s covering for Du Plessis is only supposed to be in emergencies, as his own development at 3 was a priority on this tour.
Ralepelle has had little game time in the past two years and won his place on this tour ahead of more deserving players such as Adriaan Strauss. Strauss joined the Bok side when Smit was ruled him out of the Tri-Nations, and started for the Boks when Bismarck broke down. How Ralepelle has leapfrogged him in the hooking queue is anybody’s guess.
While calling up Jannie du Plessis is the right short-term solution, it speaks volumes for De Villiers’s lack of confidence in Mujati and Ralepelle. It may also say something about the move of Smit to tighthead, a move De Villiers promised was a long-term initiative with a view to the British & Irish Lions series and the 2011 World Cup. Either play Ralepelle at No 2 with Smit at 3, or call up Strauss to fill the hooking void. That would suggest continuity and a long-term plan.
But it’s become clear there is no plan, or at least there is little confidence in the fringe players already in the squad. Du Plessis is the best bet to scrum against Sheridan this weekend, and the Boks have a realistic chance of winning this battle. If one remembers that Mujati and Ralepelle are likely to remain in the set-up come the Lions series, then one has to ask why they aren’t being pushed through in what will be the ultimate acid Test at Twickenham. The Boks may win this Saturday, but they won’t learn anything new. “

#156 Dodgeball:
i really do hope that last year was indeed his last season. if for some unexplainable reason wprugby had contracted him for a longer period (with wprugby, i wont be surprised), i hope that he will be utilised where he can help up and coming youngsters with their game. do hope i wont see him playing for either wp or stormers this year, though!
7 Jan 2009, 15:13 pm
#18 PissAnt: Sure thing, glad to help.
My point at that instance was why, if Mujati was truly injured, was he not excluded from Bok 22? Surely if you’re not fit enough to start you’re not fit enough to warm the bench, especially if you’re a prop in your first season of Test rugby.
It looked to be a straight swap for the stronger scrummager in Jannie du Plessis. If Mujati was injured, he should have been left out and another replacement (CJ van der Linde who was on standby according to De Villiers) should have been flown in. That he was merely pushed to the bench did suggest De Villiers was not keen for Mujati to start due to his shortcomings.
Turns out Mujati was genuinely injured, but according to Erasmus, the Bok management were unaware of the seriousness of his injury.
I look forward to your letter.

November 21st, 2008 at 6:10 am
Can anybody please explain the following to me :
PDV said that the strongest possible squad was chosen to go to the UK. Why then has Jannie du Plessis come over as a replacement, and been selected ahead of Brian Mujati against England. I cant understand this.

#163 JC:
You will recall that in the press releases after the Scotland match starting from the Monday already the Springbok management said that Mujati was nursing a bruised shoulder but that they were confident he would recover in time before the match against England.
This continued right up until the Thursday, when the squad was announced, with Jannie du Plessis starting on Mujati on the bench. When the squad was announced, Peter de Villiers again stated that they were waiting for the physio’s report but that they were hoping that Mujati could recover in time before the match.
Mujati would have been rested that entire week to prevent aggravating the shoulder. Du Plessis would have been slotting in with Smit and Beast during practice.
Come Saturday, and it appears Mujati has still not fully recovered from his shoulder (which appeared to not be as serious as initially thought). Du Plessis has practiced with the team. From a tactical point of view it makes more sense then to start with the player that has been practising with the run-on team. They also probably felt that, rather than risking Mujati having to go off early, leave him on the bench as cover which limits the playing time, again to prevent possible further injury to a bruised shoulder they were initially confident would be recovered by match day.

“It looked to be ….”
nothing wrong with the first two statements. you’re a journalist (although i think you’re a journalist’s *ss), so you’re supposed to make deductions (again, my humble opinion is that i dont believe you’re able to make any!)
____________________________________________________________
“…. who was on standby …… according to De Villiers”???????
_________________________________________________________
and then of course, my favourate part of your comment is that you still go on and conclude: ” That he was merely pushed to the bench did suggest De Villiers was not keen for Mujati to start due to his shortcomings”
theres two things here that baffles me:
1. how the heck you arrived at the conclusion (even with new evidence to consider)
2. how keo can keep on paying you for the sh*t you dish up here!

7 Jan 2009, 15:42 pm
Mujati actually did quite well in the S14 2008 season.
I was disappointed with his progress in the green and gold, if one considers that he made his debut at more or less the same time as Beast.
Beast as we all know, has been sensational !
7 Jan 2009, 16:17 pm
Surely, somewhere in this country there is a decent No3 that Rassie can find… Even from Argentina or something if not here.
Or Georgia
Or Romania
Or Poffadder…
7 Jan 2009, 16:23 pm
Eddie Jones’s recruitment drive. He’s bought a Bull, a Shark now its time for a Stormer.
7 Jan 2009, 16:35 pm
People forget that Mujati dominmated all-comers in the 2008 Super14. No one batted an eyelid when he was picked for the Boks but now suddenly he’s rubbish? I don’t believe that for one moment. Stormers have some real talent and if they can pull it together like late in last years comp they’re gonna be difficult to beat.
Guys like Duanne Vermeulen, Bekker, Louw and Grant not to mention J Div…
Hope it’s a good one for da Stooomas.

#163 JC: “The stronger scrummager in Jannie du Plessis”????
Which performances have you been watching, dude?
But I suppose that’s the great thing about the scrum, and about props. Unless there’s an actual tight-head situation (i.e. where it’s obvious that one side has been dominated), most of the time no-one except the participants can actually tell what’s going on in there. Hence, you can say what you like about props, because you’re never going to be proved wrong.

I’m glad things have changed. It’s good having a captain you can respect.

#222 wooden spoon: I would settle for the “Craig Martini” time management diary……..I am not managing my time at all well when I am on here LOL

#234 carol: Hi Carol. Just saying hello quick here. Just watched Sky News here. They just don’t seem happy with KP at all. Seemed he was using his big mouth again. Sorry but that how it is with him. Sending e-mails to the ECB from here in SA while on holiday here trying to get rid of the coach. It seemed to backfire on him and now he is had to step down as captain.
Anyway how was our Magnificent Captain. Mr fantastic G. Smith. Just could not believe it when he came out to bat. Well yes I did say yesterday GS would do just that. But as the game went on thought he may not do it but there he came out to try and save the game with that broken hand and damaged elbow. Huge respect to him. Also to see the Sydney crowd all stand up and clap and clap for him was just awesome.
#236 wooden spoon: agree spooner.

Think KP will still play for England but not as the captain. Just watching Sky News.
7 Jan 2009, 21:35 pm
#240 carol: I doubt Pietersen had much to with the results personally (maybe a little as the new captain) because it appears from rumours doing the rounds that not all of the team are behind him.

7 Jan 2009, 21:41 pm

#262 wooden spoon</Interesting article on Pietersen.
London – Kevin Pietersen’s extraordinary switch-hit sixes sum up a player who has polarised cricketing opinion since his arrival in England eight years ago.
Pietersen’s ability to switch his stance to thump international bowlers out of the ground left-handed has been hailed as a feat of batting brilliance and innovation that only a special few could even contemplate, let alone pull off.
Others have condemned the shot as cavalier, selfish and against the spirit, if not the rules, of cricket and something which sums up the South Africa-born all-rounder’s approach to the game.
Is he one of the most aggressive and crowd-pleasing batsmen ever to grace the game: hugely talented, justifiably confident and fully entitled to represent the country of his mother?
Or is he a cocky opportunist whose ego too often lets down his team mates? A man whose tattoo of England’s three Lions might be replaced by one of his own image and whose brief reign as captain ended because coach Peter Moores dared stand up to him?
One thing there is no argument about is the numbers.
Batting usually at number five, Pietersen boasts a Test average of 50.48 from 83 innings, the eighth-best average for an Englishman and far superior to any of his current team mates. He has 15 centuries, 11 half-centuries and an impressive 45 sixes.
In one-day internationals he was the fastest man to reach 1 000 and 2 000 runs and in his 87 matches, playing in a generally under-performing England team, he averages 48.36, his country’s best and third in the world all-time list.
His claim to be an all-rounder has diminished with time as his tame off-spin has been rarely used in Tests. He has taken only four wickets in his 101 overs but given the chance, you get the feeling he would probably take the new ball.
Born in Natal in 1980, Pietersen has displayed a single-minded self-confidence since making his first-class debut at the age of 17.
Four years later he averaged almost 60 in his first season for Nottinghamshire.
Having served his four-year residency he made his England debut in a one-day game in Zimbabwe in 2004 and then showed dignity and concentration in the face of merciless barracking to crack three centuries in a one-day series in South Africa.
His Test debut came in the opener of the memorable 2005 Ashes and he went on to play a vital role in England’s success, particularly with a maiden test century that helped the hosts save the fifth test at The Oval.
The runs flowed in subsequent years but Pietersen’s apparent refusal to change his all-or-nothing approach also drew criticism.
“The way I play is instinct-oriented,” he said recently. “I like to do things spontaneously.”
A fair amount of pre-planning must have gone into his decision to introduce the “switch-hit”, however. In 2008 he twice thumped New Zealand’s Scott Styris over the ropes after changing to a left-hander’s stance as the bowler approached.
Cries of “not cricket” abounded, but Pietersen, who won backing from the MCC and who had previously reverse-swept Muttiah Muralitharan for six, claimed it was all part of the development of the game.
There were no complaints from Styris, either. “Sometimes you just have to take your hat off and say ‘well played’,” he said.
Pietersen took over the captaincy of test and one-day sides when Michael Vaughan resigned after South Africa secured a series win in England last year.
Unsurprisingly, his six-month reign has been a busy and controversial one.
Initially he stopped the rot with a consolation win in the final Test against South Africa then lifted spirits by leading England to a 4-0 one-day series success against them.
He then took his team to the $20 million Stanford Twenty/20 match, where, under-prepared and seemingly unsure about whether they should even be taking part, England were humiliated by a West Indies select team.
A 5-0 one-day series thrashing by India was ended prematurely by the attacks in Mumbai and Pietersen won admirers for his dignity during the fallout, as England initially went home then returned to play their two-test series.
From a strong position they lost the first test, amid criticism of his captaincy, and drew the second, giving him a career return of one win, one draw and one defeat.
England, it seems, can live without Pietersen the captain but the return of Pietersen the batsman is absolutely essential to their cause.

howzit folks
stormers thread or in fact a rugby thread sure does break up the cricket on here.
a few points on stormers for 09. thank goodness rassie has learnt at least one lesson we know of from last year. this year stormers are having preseason games. last year it took all of 6 games for the stormers to finally have some sort of match fitness along with combinations starting to click. compared to all the other teams who only took 2 to 3 games to click.
am looking fwd to any new innovations rassie and other coaches bring in this season to try and work the ELVs harder.
about mujati. and ive said this before. when he played up north he was raved about as the next big thing, a propping monster and really good contributer around the pitch. now that he plays south, te same bunch label him as a mud player and over rated. take your bias someplace else. the guy is a very young prop and will in a season or 2 come into his own. add in the experience he has now at the highest level and he could be a world reknowned force at 3 for the boks. have saffas somehow adopted the kiwi tall poppy syndrome?
reminder that in the stormers lack of depth issues last year mujati played 1 to try and help the team out. clearly not his position but he did admirably considering brok was at 3.
all im saying is it looks like this player is getting unfair comments regarding his ability and he isnt doing stupid **** like watson is.
7 Jan 2009, 22:46 pm
Got to go to rugby practice now. See y’all later.

How you have felt, O men of Athens, at hearing the speeches of my accusers, I cannot tell; but I know that their persuasive words almost made me forget who I was – such was the effect of them; and yet they have hardly spoken a word of truth. But many as their falsehoods were, there was one of them which quite amazed me; – I mean when they told you to be upon your guard, and not to let yourselves be deceived by the force of my eloquence. They ought to have been ashamed of saying this, because they were sure to be detected as soon as I opened my lips and displayed my deficiency; they certainly did appear to be most shameless in saying this, unless by the force of eloquence they mean the force of truth; for then I do indeed admit that I am eloquent.

#163 JC:
I have no problem with you making deductions based on what you saw (you were there not so) because you probably had the better view from all of us.
The problem I have in a sense is that the deductions were based on opinion passed as fact in this instance.
The tone of what was written in the magazine in the article was to the effect of the injury was manufactured by the management because of ‘their lack of faith in Mujati’s abilities’ (were the words you used in the article I believe).
Only now, do we (including you) find out the injury was in fact more serious than first thought.
If the management could be accused of anything it was that they did not properly assess the injury after the Scotland match and therefore had to make a decision on the Sunday to bring CJ in already and not give Mujati till the last minute.
The main thing here is your deduction in the article in the magazine took a clear swipe at the Bok coaching and management team (as the media has done throughout 2008) questioning their acumen or ability. You got it wrong.
Have your say
