The second day of the Paarl Gym Wildeklawer Festival saw the Western Cape schools dominate their upcountry opponents.
The hosts Paarl Gym caused a major upset by toppling Affies, who were previously unbeaten going into the fixture, by 22-16 in the feature game of the final day.
Paarl Gym outscored their northern counterparts by three tries to one. Fullback Jaque du Plessis scored twice to secure victory for the ‘Gimmies’. Paul Roos also maintained their strong start to the season by defeating Waterkloof 16-13 in a tense encounter. Goal kicker Wouter van Niekerk proved to be the Stellenbosch school’s hero, contributing 11 points via the boot.
Paarl Boys’ also had a convincing win over EG Jansen from Johannesburg, outclassing their opposition by 30-0. Flyhalf Gavin Hauptfleish turned in another stellar performance with the boot. He kicked 15 points via three conversions and three penalties. Hauptfleish looks to be a strong contender for the WP Craven Week side as he has a natural ability to read and dictate a game. ‘Boishaai’ scored three well worked tries to sink EG Jansen who looked lethargic and deflated after their loss to Paul Roos on Saturday, having squandered a 24-point lead.
Boland Landbou also produced a strong finish to the day when the Agricultural side beat Diamantveld 24-17 in an entertaining six-try affair. However, it was the accuracy of flyhalf Alex de Kock’s boot that secured victory for Landbou.
In the day’s other results Framesby had a convincing win over HTS Middelburg, in the process winning the award for the most attractive rugby on the day. Outeniqua were humbled by Monument from Krugersdorp 27-20, a shock result for the high flying ‘streepies’ side from George that have proved to be a well drilled unit so far this year.
Paul Roos, Paarl Boys and Monument ended the tournament as the only unbeaten sides. Philip Taylor, coach of the Paarl Gym side, told keo.co.za that the festival had produced some quality rugby showcasing great schoolboy rugby talent from around the country. The inaugural tournament proved to be a monumental success.
