Rose in No 15 jersey

Earl Rose has been selected at fullback for the Lions’ opening Currie Cup match against the Bulls at Loftus on Saturday.

Rose’s best position has yet to be discovered as he has alternated between flyhalf and fullback and he will form the last line of defence alongside Tukkies recruit Johan Jackson and Dusty Noble. Former Cheetah Alywn Hollenbach has been slotted straight into the side at centre, as has No 10 Herkie Kruger.

Another signing, tighthead Kevin Buys, will anchor the scrum, while former Valke captain Nico Luus will start in the second row.

Former UCT centre Pieter Engelbrecht will sit on the bench.

Lions – Earl Rose, Dusty Noble, Alwyn Hollenbach, Walter Venter, Johan Jackson, Herkie Kruger, Jano Vermaak, Willem Alberts, Franco van der Merwe, Cobus Grobbelaar (c), Willem Stoltz, Nico Luus, Kevin Buys, Hans van Dyk, JC van Rensburg.
Subs: Derek Harwood, Gert Muller, Johan Snyman, Robert Kruger, Chris Jonck, Pieter Engelbrecht, Michael Killian

I might be wrong but in my humble opinion fullback is Rose`s best position. He can cause less damage there LOL

Based on these two teams, and more specifically the tight five, the Lions will get a hiding at Loftus.

This will be good for earl, to work with world cup winning coach, jake white who rates earl very highly & hopefully will put him on a programme that will see him flourish to be like giteau, who jake compared earl’s skill to! lol

What the fck is going on in that team sheet? Surely this is not the best they could come up with. That’s a bunch of fckn nobodies, coached by a bunch of teachers.

Bulls have a top notch backline, but their pack looks a bit suspect to me. Particularly in the back row.

With their 3 top locks and 3 of the top 4 loose forwards out of action they were bound to struggle a bit in that department.

I’m quite interested to see what the youngsters can produce. If they can give the backs good ball, Pieter Rossouw’s charges should be able to score a few nice tries.

But a lot will also depend on Burton Francis’ tactical kicking. ALL Bulls gameplans are based on that aspect of the game.

Don’t be so cynical. I’m honestly interested in how well Burton will perform this season. He is the 2nd best flyhalf at the Bulls and it’s not like we have someone waiting in the wings to replace him. But he’s not had much gametime in the starting berth, either at S14 or Currie Cup level. Or even Vodacom Cup level for that matter.

He’s gotta perform, or we’re going to struggle in the Currie Cup.

There have been plenty of players who were very talented at school but could not make it at Senior level. To make it at senior level you actually got to put some effort in and actually do some training. Rose has never put on any bulk or increased his strength if he wants to make it he actually has to put some effort in.

the only way for rose to grow into his position at 10 (which I believe is his position) is by playing there consistemntly for a whole season. Look at how Morne steyn only started playing his best rugby after he was no longer being swapped around with Hougaard and started playing consistently at 10 for a loooong time- nearly a whole season.

I also think he has some potential at 10. i like the way he attacks the line and gets his outside backs running onto the ball but he has to get his mind right and has to improve his Conditioning and strength. I dont think the international stage is the right place to do it and it is actually quite frustrating seeing him play fullback all the time for his provicial team.
