Rose in No 15 jersey
9 Jul 2009
Earl Rose has been selected at fullback for the Lions’ opening Currie Cup match against the Bulls at Loftus on Saturday.
Rose’s best position has yet to be discovered as he has alternated between flyhalf and fullback and he will form the last line of defence alongside Tukkies recruit Johan Jackson and Dusty Noble. Former Cheetah Alywn Hollenbach has been slotted straight into the side at centre, as has No 10 Herkie Kruger.
Another signing, tighthead Kevin Buys, will anchor the scrum, while former Valke captain Nico Luus will start in the second row.
Former UCT centre Pieter Engelbrecht will sit on the bench.
Lions – Earl Rose, Dusty Noble, Alwyn Hollenbach, Walter Venter, Johan Jackson, Herkie Kruger, Jano Vermaak, Willem Alberts, Franco van der Merwe, Cobus Grobbelaar (c), Willem Stoltz, Nico Luus, Kevin Buys, Hans van Dyk, JC van Rensburg.
Subs: Derek Harwood, Gert Muller, Johan Snyman, Robert Kruger, Chris Jonck, Pieter Engelbrecht, Michael Killian

I might be wrong but in my humble opinion fullback is Rose`s best position. He can cause less damage there LOL

will he throw a lie out to himself (5 meters from the try line) again?
9 Jul 2009, 14:24 pm
Has Pretorius left now for Oz?

#3 byoboy: lie = line
9 Jul 2009, 14:25 pm
Very unfair to the Lions! They should be given a few points up front to compensate for having to play Rose!
9 Jul 2009, 14:27 pm
Based on these two teams, and more specifically the tight five, the Lions will get a hiding at Loftus.
9 Jul 2009, 14:28 pm
who is herkie kruger now & why is he getting first bite @ pivot?
This will be good for earl, to work with world cup winning coach, jake white who rates earl very highly & hopefully will put him on a programme that will see him flourish to be like giteau, who jake compared earl’s skill to! lol

Lot of new names here. All the best for the lions this year. Bulls will be to strong but the lions don’t have to stand back.
9 Jul 2009, 14:30 pm
“Rose’s best position is yet to be discovered…”
Hehehe.
Good way of putting it.
9 Jul 2009, 14:30 pm
I thought Jake believed Rose is a 10 and deserves a shot there???
Now they go back to Herkie Kruger???
WTF?
9 Jul 2009, 14:31 pm
#13 PissAnt: Jake was playing PdV. Next he will tell him to play January at fullback.
9 Jul 2009, 14:32 pm
What the fck is going on in that team sheet? Surely this is not the best they could come up with. That’s a bunch of fckn nobodies, coached by a bunch of teachers.
What happened to the rest of the Lions squad?
And I know Earl’s best position: back of Economy Class, heading to Cape Town.

#15 katman: ha ha…would that be to play for WP or just to CT
9 Jul 2009, 14:38 pm
#16 PissAnt: If they put teams like this on the park, a fitness programme will be like a band-aid on a disembowelment.

But is Baywatch the man to lead the Lions during this tumultuous time?
He has personified the Lions campaigns over the last few years: always losing but never quite sure why …

Bulls have a top notch backline, but their pack looks a bit suspect to me. Particularly in the back row.
With their 3 top locks and 3 of the top 4 loose forwards out of action they were bound to struggle a bit in that department.
I’m quite interested to see what the youngsters can produce. If they can give the backs good ball, Pieter Rossouw’s charges should be able to score a few nice tries.
But a lot will also depend on Burton Francis’ tactical kicking. ALL Bulls gameplans are based on that aspect of the game.

this no-name lions team are going to give the cocky bulls a big wake up to start the cc season off.

Jake White thinks Rose is good enough at fly half for the Boks but not for the Lions……

Add Johan van Deventer and Henno Mentz to the injured list.

Where did Wepener go… huge loss!

#22 Tacitus:
Dries van Schalkwyk will suprise you at 8.Very good player,is the next Pedrie Wannenburg(in his prime)
9 Jul 2009, 14:50 pm
The Lions should see this as the start of a 3 year plan.
9 Jul 2009, 14:52 pm
#21 WilladieLeeu: Where is Shandre Frolick, Doppies la Grange, Deon van Rensburg?
9 Jul 2009, 14:53 pm
#25 Sheriff: Burton will be ok. He would benefit from playing with FdP, but Heini will take some pressure of him.
9 Jul 2009, 14:53 pm
#22 Tacitus:
I thought Dewald Potgieter was one of the outstanding players for the Bulls during the S14, that loose trio is much stronger and balanced than you might expect.
9 Jul 2009, 14:54 pm
#33 fatbastard: Agree, but we will miss Stegman and Spies. Not easy to replace them.
9 Jul 2009, 14:55 pm
#27 WilladieLeeu:
Johan van Deventer is playing for the u/21′s saturday. Not injured. Clever is in the USA, but coming back in a couple of weeks.
9 Jul 2009, 14:58 pm
#28 money_man:
Went to France I think. Ja, excellent scrummer. Line-out throws a bit suspect but he is a huge loss.
#31 katman:
Frolick also injured. Deon is back with the Leopards. Doppies was on his honeymoon recently, maybe still getting over that.
9 Jul 2009, 14:59 pm
#25 Sheriff:
Don’t be so cynical. I’m honestly interested in how well Burton will perform this season. He is the 2nd best flyhalf at the Bulls and it’s not like we have someone waiting in the wings to replace him. But he’s not had much gametime in the starting berth, either at S14 or Currie Cup level. Or even Vodacom Cup level for that matter.
He’s gotta perform, or we’re going to struggle in the Currie Cup.
So fall guy? No. Vital cog in the machine. For sure.
9 Jul 2009, 14:59 pm
#35 WilladieLeeu: I saw Clever play for the US 2 weeks ago, he got man of the match award.
9 Jul 2009, 15:01 pm
#26 pepinillo:
He said that to try and influence PdV to select Rose at 10.
He knows very well that Rose is not ready for that role.
You can see his true opinion here cause his soft parts are indirectly on the line, he immediately ensures that Rose is NOT at 10.
Jackal.
9 Jul 2009, 15:02 pm
#36 WilladieLeeu: I was going to say we should lure Deon van Rensburg to a proper team, but then I realised there’s not that much to choose between the Lions and the Leopards right now.
9 Jul 2009, 15:03 pm
#38 AGTEROSKOMOOKINNIEKRAAL:

Don’t sell Brummer short… he was instrumental in bringing the U20′s back from a 20-nil deficit to annihilate the French to make semis of the RWC this year!

#40 katman:
Let’s hope that changes.
Our centres for the CC:
Pieter Engelbrecht; Ruoan Cloete
Jaque Fourie; Barry Goodes;
Walter Venter; Doppies la Grange and now Hollenbach. He’ll back-up for FB.
