Rose in No 15 jersey

Earl Rose has been selected at fullback for the Lions’ opening Currie Cup match against the Bulls at Loftus on Saturday.

Rose’s best position has yet to be discovered as he has alternated between flyhalf and fullback and he will form the last line of defence alongside Tukkies recruit Johan Jackson and Dusty Noble. Former Cheetah Alywn Hollenbach has been slotted straight into the side at centre, as has No 10 Herkie Kruger.

Another signing, tighthead Kevin Buys, will anchor the scrum, while former Valke captain Nico Luus will start in the second row.

Former UCT centre Pieter Engelbrecht will sit on the bench.

Lions – Earl Rose, Dusty Noble, Alwyn Hollenbach, Walter Venter, Johan Jackson, Herkie Kruger, Jano Vermaak, Willem Alberts, Franco van der Merwe, Cobus Grobbelaar (c), Willem Stoltz, Nico Luus, Kevin Buys, Hans van Dyk, JC van Rensburg.
Subs: Derek Harwood, Gert Muller, Johan Snyman, Robert Kruger, Chris Jonck, Pieter Engelbrecht, Michael Killian

Rose should play at 10 or not at all. He is a useless fullback. Too small, too slow.

#54 adi: please do clarify what you mean by putting earl rose in the same sentence as cullen and robinson

  • 59.adi: Reply to this comment

    the same attacking abbility

    lack of defensive skills

    build.

the lions are always on the backfoot.

Cullen was small but extremly strong, he could bench 180 kg. I doubt Rose can bench his own body weight. Cullen was extremly quick. Rose is extremly slow. Cullen had a side step of a God! Rose has a side step of a prop!

The word Rose and Cullen should never appear in the same sentence ever again.

earl has pace, flair and speed.

    xellent side step.

    Earl is switch between positions.

when cullen played centre his defense was lacking and he did not have the space to step.

was fired at an early age

Are you for real? Not even dignifying that with a full response.

Just know this, you obviously know nothing about rugby if you think Rose is anything like Cullen or Robinson.

Its incredible how delusional some people are.

Ask Adam Thompson, the Highlanders flanker, about Rose’s devastating sidstep and Pace!

You are obviously taking the piss and just fishing.

In 1999, Rose was selected for the Western Province Under-Fifteen Merit Team, an accolade followed up two years later with his inclusion in the Under-Sixteen WP Academy. He played in Hoërskool Strand’s First XV from 2000 to 2002, in which year he also made the WP Under-Eighteen Craven Week, the WP Under-Nineteen squad, the SA Schools team for matches against France and Wales, and the South African Under-Nineteen training squad. 2003 brought the IRB Sevens World Series in New Zealand and Brisbane, Australia, and the SA Under-Nineteen FIRA-AER World Championship. He was included in the Western Province Under-Twenty squad in 2004

    Jody rose

    Dollie

    croy

all of them represented their sa age groups. not good enough for a province 10

Not good enough for a number 10 anywhere in the world!! Not even a club team in Japan

I remeber watching Rose play for the SA u21 team and watching Luke Mcalister run over him about a hundred times. He must of let through about 3 tries in that game.

    Ja, daai is sad man.
Earl is die Michael Jackson van SA rugby.
Maar soos jy se, hy was baie goed as n jnr.
Sy pa moes hom in die Kaap gelos het, dan was hy lankal Springbok.
Maar toe raak ou Enver gulsig en verkoop hom aan Transvaal.
    En kyk nou….

Alle grappies op n stokkie, Earl was moosa goed as n youngster.

There have been plenty of players who were very talented at school but could not make it at Senior level. To make it at senior level you actually got to put some effort in and actually do some training. Rose has never put on any bulk or increased his strength if he wants to make it he actually has to put some effort in.

  • 83.Pietman: Reply to this comment

    #82 Sonito:
Yes, Earl needed to bulk up a bit.
But he is still a talented player regardless…
And PdeV WILL play him at some stage.

  • 84.St.Petersburgbok: Reply to this comment

Earl will probably look like a superstar.
it is after all the early rounds of the CC with all the best players out on bok duty and no pressure whatsoever.

exactly the opposite end of the scale when wanting to access a players character and potential.

Twakkie no doubt will point this out as justifying Rose’s selection to the Bok squad.

    what a joke.

    Next stop for Rose.
    Griekwas,Olifants or Cavaliers.

Why does rose get so much airtime…..

    the guy is super ****,..!!!

  • 86.SjamBok: Reply to this comment

    #51 Sonito: I agree.

the only way for rose to grow into his position at 10 (which I believe is his position) is by playing there consistemntly for a whole season. Look at how Morne steyn only started playing his best rugby after he was no longer being swapped around with Hougaard and started playing consistently at 10 for a loooong time- nearly a whole season.

  • 87.Dunx: Reply to this comment

rose should go he aint that gr8

  • 88.Sonito: Reply to this comment

    #86 SjamBok:

I also think he has some potential at 10. i like the way he attacks the line and gets his outside backs running onto the ball but he has to get his mind right and has to improve his Conditioning and strength. I dont think the international stage is the right place to do it and it is actually quite frustrating seeing him play fullback all the time for his provicial team.

When’s the last time that the Lions fielded a CC team without a single test cap in the match 22?

  • 90.Kietzphat: Reply to this comment

Rose’s best position is either staying in the changeroom or sitting in the stands…

The more you talk up rose the more you embarrass…rose is kak.

He was a good age group player but failed to make the step up to the big time as his defence is shocking, he is to erratic and has lots & lots of brain farts.

  • 92.adi: Reply to this comment

jake white tells PDV to play rose at 10, but at the lions he must play 15.

This is a plot to keep him out of the springbok plans.

  • 94.Paws: Reply to this comment

Earl rose has lost more games for the lions than he has won .. and I’m afraid that trend will continue.

Yes, maybe he was a good age group player .. but that was long ago. He has now been at the top level for 3/4 years and has not shaped up.
The sooner he leaves the Lions the better .. he might shine in the B section of the cc, but really has no place in the A section, s14 or Boks.

  • 95.adi: Reply to this comment

I agree he should leave the lions.

    The lions have no ambitions.

herkie kruger is played flyhalf, before earl or jody

Are u stupid or something. if is was a better flyhalf . fine

why do you buy these guys as 10′s and then you use rejects from other provinces.

he lost more games , because when he came on the game was already lost.
