Air New Zealand Cup might not have caught on with some myopic bloggers in SA but the weekend’s happenings may have won some of the limelight back from rugby league in NZ. The Northland v Auckland game was played in little Kerikeri in the Bay of Islands (pop; 6000), attendance 7000. Not bad and well done NZRFU for getting the game back to the people. Now SARFU, about that Sharks game in PMBG?

Bay of Plenty move to the top of the Table.
They don’t even have a Coach.
He resigned 3 weeks ago, and no replacement has been made.

What is it with Rugby League that has Oz and Kaaiwaailand so enthralled? It has to be the most shite game ever concocted next to Aussie Rules. All that gyrating on the ground while another man tries to pin you down and feel you up.

1. played it ?
2. been to it ?
3. lived it ?
oh
thought not.
Best thing about Rugby League for Sth Africa is they dont play it. Its a major sport in NZ and Aus. Imagine who much stronger NZ/Aus Union teams would be with their player-numbers doubled/tripled, whilst 100% of player-catchment is kept with Union in SA. NZ are World R.League Champions, Aus are generally the Best in the World, so presumably 1 or 2 mighty be worthy additions….

#18 WakaNathan: Whateva loser, Soccer is our national sport. Imagine our player pool increased 10-fold. Stick to reality, League sucks the only reason it is gaining in popularity in NZ is because you won the world cup. Who else is even competitive? England?

#19 Ratel Brussow (MSIUR):
Yet another Sth African charmer on board. No wonder the bloggers flee here in their droves.
Given the body-type similarities, not to say the game itself, between League & Union, the example is far more relevant than football.
‘Gaining in popularity’……. so the answer to the question @ 18 above is clearly ‘(4) none of the above’.
League is and has been for many many years hugely popular in NZ, and bigger still in Aus. The League World Cup Final was played at a sold out Eden Park in 1988, which given that was 21yrs ago apparently made it quite popular back then too. The NRL competiton (in whatever guise) had massive ratings in NZ for 10+ years before they even entered a team (Warriors) in 1995. Ask any kid about Olsen Filipaina, Howie Tamati, Mark Graham and Clayton Friend – NZ players from the 70′s & 80′s and they will wax lyrical.
So whilst I dont expect an Ignoramus to appreciate sports found in others countries, it might be helpful to keep schtum on those that others do.
Have your say
