Guildford trounces Tasman
28 Aug 2009
Zac Guldford scored a 77th minute try to boost Hawke’s Bay to a 28-26 win over Tasman.
With time running out, the Hurricanes winger accepted a pass from the explosive Israel Dagg and showed good speed to finish in the corner. Andrew Horrell missed the conversion, but it didn’t matter, as Hawke’s Bay managed to maintain possession until fulltime.
In other New Zealand Cup matches, Otago thumped Nothland 29-7 in Whangarei.
Adam Thomson scored two tries as Otago went to a 22-7 lead at the break, while further tries by Ryan Shortland and Ben Smith ensured the southerners secured the four-try bonus.

Guilford could be an outside bet for the RWC squad. Already many S14 caps for a youngster to go with his Juniors and 7s success. Looks a tidy player, not powerful like many NZ wingers but nippy and alert in the Howlett mould. He seems to have won many a match for the Magpies already in last 2-3 seasons and the Bay are buzzing on finally selecting a home-bred team instead of them being pinched by Wellington and Otago.
The names of Guildford, Robinson, Dagg, Vito and Cruden will be names closely followed in NZ during 2010, all of them heavy in success with the RWC Juniors of past 2 years.
