Canterbury smash Wellington

Canterbury secured the Ranfurly Shield losing 36-14 to Canterbury at Westpac Stadium.

Canterbury had sealed the result by half-time with 26-0 lead and carried that momentum into the second to regain the shield for the first time since 2007.

All Blacks flyhalf Dan Carter scored 21 points off the boot, while George Whitelock, Tim Bateman and Corey Flynn all scored tries for Canterbury. Blacks’ captain Richie McCaw was omnipresent at the breakdown.

In other results, Taranaki beat Manawatu 12-10. Manawatu had an opportunity to win the game when they were awarded a penalty in the final minute. However, flyhalf Aaron Cruden failed to bank the points.

Callum Bruce scored 20 points in Waikato’s 30-8 victory over Counties Manukau with a try, three penalties and three conversions.
