Canterbury back on top

Canterbury jumped to the top of the log in the New Zealand Cup after a 29-17 victory over Taranaki on Friday.

The defending champions brought Taranaki back down to earth after the latter recorded a rare victory over Wellingon last weekend. They did, however, hold Canterbury in the first half.

The sides were deadlocked at 14-14 at the break, but the flood gates opened as wing James Paterson scored a try within four minutes of the restart.

Fullback Sean Maitland then crossed the chalk to secure the vital win. Pivot Stephen Brett added the other five points with a conversion and a penalty, while Taranaki only added three points to their tally through flyhalf Willie Ripia.

In other Friday results, Waikato edged Wellington 23-18 in Hamilton.

The home side went into a 20-6 lead in the second half, but Wellington fought back in the last 16 minutes, scoring 12 points in quick succession. However, Waikato kept their composure and held on for the win.
