Go Hammies. You’re a shining example of the future of club rugby in this country.

Hamiltons RFC, Cape Town, and Waikato province, headquartered at Hamilton city, NZ, play in identical jerseys.

    #4 the peanut gallery:

Waikato adopted the gold, black and red strip in 1928, combining the town of Hamilton’s colours of gold and black and the “Old Boys” colours of red and black. (The Waikato Rugby Union was created in 1921.)

Hamilton Rugby Football Club started in 1875. There was a Scotsman named Nightingale who convened a meeting in the offices of Messrs Hamilton Ross & Co in Cape Town, there they decided on the name of Hamilton Football Club – their first strip was a white jersey with a diagonal red stripe from right shoulder to stripe and a red Maltese Cross on the left of the chest. In 1914 the current Hammies strip was created, after Hamilton Rugby Football Club and Sea Point Rugby Football Club merged.

So I guess that means Hammies came first.

Same colours, but not identical – Hamiltons have red, black and gold in three wide bands, whereas Waikato strips have at least two stripes of each colour.

How these fellas manage full time jobs, gym training, and full contact rugby is beyond me. But then I’m from Joburg:).

Hamiltons winger looks to be a very good player

It takes a lot of commitment.

But then, that’s exactly what the Springboks did before the professional era – they all had full-time jobs and had to request leave to go on tours!

I remember Divan Serfontein telling me he once received a bottle of red wine as “payment” for playing a Springbok match!

Anyone who has followed Hammies thru the lean years, and there we a lot of them.
Will appreciate the amount of hard work, commitment and yes, money that has gone in to turning them around from being cannon fodder to one of the best and most professionally run clubs in the country.

I was at UCT two Saturday’s ago when a come from behind try in the dying seconds of the game secured them the League. It was truly a memorable game and one that I will remember for the rest of my life….

Beautiful as it is, unfortunately Hamiltons’ history won’t help them come the final – Pukke will defend their crown methinks (by 10+) Heil Puk!

Win or loose, it has still been a great season for Hammies…

#11 gretep: LOSE. (“Loose” applies to dangerous wheel-nuts and dodgy women.) LOSE means you don’t win.
