Canterbury survive Northland scare
26 Sep 2009
Canterbury held on for a 31-21 victory over Northland in the New Zealand Cup in Christchurch.
With 15 minutes remaining the scores were level at 21-all before winger Sean Maitland’s try sealed the result.
Canterbury led 13-3 at one stage before Joel McKenty struck twice for the visitors to ignite hopes of a famous upset victory. Canterbury went into the break 16-15 ahead, but Maitland eased the pressure on them with a try soon after the restart.
However, Lachie Munro slotted two penalties to bring his side level, but Maitland’s second try and a Stephen Brett drop goal was enough to kill the spirit of a determined Northland and maintain top spot in the table.
In Saturday’s other match Hawke’s Bay edged Manawatu 32-20.

Maitland was great in the World Juniors and then had a quiet year last year. This year he is on fire
Have your say
