Moa double downs Southland
2 Oct 2009
Taniela Moa scored twice in Auckland’s 27-13 victory over Southland in the New Zealand Cup.
The burly scrumhalf scored the tries which proved to be decisive either side of half-time, helping guide Auckland snap a two-game losing streak.
The win lifts Auckland to fifth on the table and sees Southland remain at third, with three other matches to come in the round.
Auckland were bolstered by the return of All Blacks prop John Afoa and loose forward Jerome Kaino, and their presence made a telling difference to the pack. They were dominant at the set phases and breakdown, never allowing Southland to get any flow to their game.
Southland were in the game for 30 minutes but Auckland’s three tries, thanks to Moa brace and one from Peter Saili, killed off their challenge.

Southland are going to find it hard now.
On form and fixtures it looks like Canterbury and Wellington are in for home semis. Hawks bay should get 5 points against Counties next week to almost secure a semi spot too.
The last spot is very open.
The thing going for Southland is that in the final week when they play Canterbury all of the All Blacks are away.

…. oh and Otago now have 3 home games to try and prove that they are better than the 4 teams below which are all good candidates for the drop.
Manawatu
North Harbour
Northlands
Counties Manakau
Unfortunate that Counties appear to have just played their last Div1 home game. They did go much better though.
How can the NZRU justify 2 WC semi finals and a final in the North Island when 40% of Div 1 teams are from the South Island? Woops, almost forgot where the NZRU offices are
Going to be an interesting finish to the season.

Moa is the most physical scrumhalf I have seen, simialer size and build to Ma’a Nonu.
Have your say
