Puttick klaps Kiwis

A breathtaking Andrew Puttick century set up a resounding 55-run win for the Cobras over the Otago Volts.

Puttick reached 100 off just 60 deliveries, his sparkling knock including 12 4s and three 6s. The Cobras lost Herschelle Gibbs and Henry Davids early on, but it was a 95-run partnership between Puttick and JP Duminy that rejuvenated their innings.

When Duminy departed, Justin Ontong followed Puttick’s lead by playing some expansive strokes straight down the ground. Ontong finished on 39 off just 14 balls, cracking two 4s and four 6s.

The Volts suffered a major setback when key batsman Brendon McCullum was out in the sixth over just when he had begun to hit the ball sweetly.

Davids’ speed to the ball and quick release left McCullum stranded, and two other great pieces of fielding by Davids proved the undoing of Aaron Redmond and Hamish Rutherford.

Wickets began to tumble as a direct hit by Gibbs resulted in the Volts’ third run-out of the innings. Nathan McCullum got stuck into the Cobras for a valuable 38, but his demise spelled the end for the Kiwis.

The victory is the Cobras’ second from as many Champions League games.

it’s nerves! I’m worse than Jean! We could be playing the Leopards U19 team at home and I’d be nervous!

Gibbs needs to come to the party. A duck and one in his 2 innings so far.
