All eyes on Bash
16 Oct 2009
The solitary Springbok in WP’s starting backline, Peter Grant, holds the key to an unlikely upset over the Bulls this Saturday.
Not renowned for his kicking exploits, Grant is in for the duel of his career when he lines up against Fourie du Preez and Morné Steyn. Territorial dominance is all-important, and the Bulls halfback pairing specialise in pinning the opposition in their own half.
WP backline coach Robbie Fleck feels Grant isn’t given due credit for his kicking contributions. Fleck said Grant will be able to match Du Preez and Steyn on Saturday.
‘Guys have been questioning Bash’s kicking ability since the start of the season, and he’s delivered week after week. It’s true that it’s not his real strength, and we’re hoping the game opens up where his attacking abilities will come to the fore.’
Province are relieved to be playing this game at Newlands and not at Loftus Versfeld, where the rarefied atmosphere allows the ball to travel further and saps the energy of visiting players in the latter stages.
It is because of this fact that Fleck believes Du Preez and Steyn’s impact should be reduced. WP are also aiming to pressurise the Bulls up front, and if they manage to dominate, the Bulls halfbacks will be further quelled.
‘Any flyhalf will feel the heat when his pack is retreating, and we’ll certainly look to apply that kind of pressure,’ said Fleck.
‘I remember Steyn did struggle earlier this year when the Boks were going backward. He has progressed a lot this season, while Fourie du Preez is the best scrumhalf in the world, but even they could be susceptible if they are playing on the back foot.
‘It’s good that this game is being played at Newlands, so Steyn won’t get the usual distance on those kicks.’
Everybody’s talking about the forward battle this Saturday, and while the Bulls are the favourites at the lineout, the hosts will feel confident at scrum time.
Both sides will look to play in their opponent’s half. Should WP realise their lofty ambition of forward and territorial dominance, they’ll still need to make their opportunities count. This is where Fleck sees Grant exercising his greatest strength.
‘Bash has been massive for us this season, he’s really taken on the senior role in the backs since Jean de Villiers left for Munster. He will have the experience of Frikkie Welsh to lean on, but Bash is calling the shots.
‘There are ways and means of breaking down that Bulls defence, their system certainly isn’t flawless. Our pack’s done very well this year, and if they can lay the platform then it’s a matter of executing and getting over that tryline. It’ll be hard work, but we’ve done it before and we’re capable of doing it again,’ said Fleck.
‘This backline has come a long way this season, but there’s no need to be content with only making it this far. We have to front up. If we fail, we can’t blame it on youth.’
The senior players had a meeting with the management on Monday and Fleck said he was pleasantly surprised with their attitude throughout that exchange. Grant, Luke Watson and the other seniors are confident ahead of this weekend’s semi-final, and like Fleck, they’re glad the media and rugby public view them as underdogs.
‘The pressure is all on the Bulls,’ said Fleck. ‘They’re the team laden with Springboks, they’re the team that has won a Super 14 title recently.
‘We’re playing at home where we’re unbeaten, so there are positives for us. There’s no pressure, only the pressure we place on ourselves to execute effectively.’

All said and done — it’s gonna be tough for both teams.
16 Oct 2009, 07:19 am
If he really thinks WP have a chance of forward dominance, he’s deluded. Their scrum is overhyped, like everything in Cape Town. The Bulls just need to run their S14 semi game plan they used against the Crusaders on muscle memory. I’m a Sharks fan, but, the Blue Juggernaut will crush WeePee.
16 Oct 2009, 07:23 am
Love all the beating of the Bulls chests….30 points winning margins…’crushing of wp….just pitching and relying on muscle memory to win, etc, etc,ad nauseum…..
So am hoping the bulls players feel the same way….sadly i doubt it.
May just be a bit tougher than some rather big mouths on this blog believe.
16 Oct 2009, 07:39 am
Not saying they just need to pitch up, but that they’ve done this all before against more illustrious opposition.
16 Oct 2009, 07:41 am
I dont believe the pressure is all on the Bulls – they are a professional outfit ( now) and the key to playing FINAL rugby is mental preparation – they certainly have the edge here …… But maybe a bit of complacency in the Bulls camp , has sunk many a ship
16 Oct 2009, 07:41 am
Bulls are a settled experienced team. It’s going to be an asswhoopin’ of atomic proportions.
16 Oct 2009, 07:46 am
All eyes on me!
I hope Paul Bosch’s defence is solid. That guy is going to have to make alot of tackles on a large, strong, fast, afrikaans men!
I know the odds are against us, but I think we can pull it off!

#16 BESTER:
I see that Puma and Sharks-Lover are trying to recruit more Sharks fans for RT. Seems they don’t get the respect they feel is their due.
If WP supporters felt the same way, considering all the cheap shots we take, we’d never have the courage to post on any rugby blog.
16 Oct 2009, 08:46 am
#16 BESTER: nee man, let’s leave the other site alone, our friend ashley is the quota blogger there according to sheriff, and he is a staunch wp supporter. So the site can’t be THAT bad.

Anyone who comes onto keo and blatantly trys to recruit is a poacher and shows a lack of class….undermining a site that brought them together in the 1 st place….not on in my book.
Did those people take poaching classes from Rassie??
16 Oct 2009, 08:58 am
Anyway….my bloody nerves are shot….best i avoid the site today…may end up in trouble with some of the Sharks and Buklls okes…..
Go Cheetahs and WP……slat hulle met n slap snoek!!

Stop talking abov the other site guys before pietman receives emails about your conduct here!checked out the site and discovered that pietman got an email about my run- in with sharkslover.looks like this chap is the head of the gestapo over there.

Bash? Is that not one of Santa’s reindeer? Or is it one of the seven dwarfs?
16 Oct 2009, 09:24 am
The bulls are a great team but they have one weak link in my opinion – Frans Ludeke. He’s not in Meyer’s class and mental prep has a lot to do with the coach I think. It’s really up to the senior bulls to get everyone in the right frame of mind for this one.
16 Oct 2009, 09:25 am
SL and Puma are huge dissapointment, not sure they will have success recruiting here.
If you want to be censored on what you say and want to surround yourself with bullying Bulls supporters and agree with all commnets on the site and be controlled by GBS and the biggest poepal of them all that is fatman…….i mean Pietman, then by all means RT is for you !!!

Care to elaborate on that comment a bit, maybe enlighten me. What else is over-hyped in Cape Town, the beaches maybe, the mountain, the wine farms, the 400 year tradition perhaps, could it be the waterfront, or could it be all the beach front houses, would love to know.

Don’t worry, it’s all bark and no bite, Chooser of the Slain.

Sharks – 5

16 Oct 2009, 09:56 am
#43 justrugby:
Having said that I think the Sharks have a great chance of making it 6…..they have a well balanced side , will be tough against the Cheetahs but I think the Sharks overall quality will pull them through.
Think the Bulls will win at a canter against Province, just to many settled combinations and overall experience in the Bulls side.
But the Province revival has begun……. always said we are a year away from winning trophies.
I hope i am wrong , cream always come to the top and this year year the Bulls and Sharks got more cream thean we have at Province !!

16 Oct 2009, 10:09 am
#51 justrugby: well I think you might be right with your prediction especially now that WP have a more competitive pack, Fourie and Habana will be good acquisitions and JDV will probably be back for next year’s CC, Pietersen will be a year further along in his development. It seems that when WP have had a good backline they’ve had weak forwards and now their forwards are stronger, the backs don’t look so dangerous.
16 Oct 2009, 10:10 am
#57 Big Hit: next year they should have both in place.
16 Oct 2009, 10:15 am
I think I’m in the mood to go and cause some k@k at this site.
16 Oct 2009, 10:17 am
#58 Big Hit:
Corect, it will definetely be a more balanced and experrienced side with the aquisitions you mentioned.
Luke will be missed though , not sure who the captaincy will revert to, Schalk seems to be the front runner……if we can overcome that issue and the players are settled and behind their captain, I do think next year we can make our trophy cabinet look more attractive !!

16 Oct 2009, 12:41 pm
#103 Ig:
I was also young, once.
16 Oct 2009, 12:41 pm
Peter Grant has held the key in so many games he played for WP or the Stormers and never has he delivered and won the game for his team when it really counted and it’s not gonna happen this Saturday and it gives me no pleasure to say it.
16 Oct 2009, 12:48 pm
#120 Slappes:
And no more Müchener Schweinshaxe or Eisbein for me!
I was wondering why my fellow passengers at the airport got all nervous when I started doing my travel prayers…
16 Oct 2009, 12:54 pm
#125 Sharksgirl:
that’s very nice of you
16 Oct 2009, 12:56 pm
Don’t know what to say anymore ! Province die CC kom weer

#133 Andre_WP:
Oppas, nounou word jy beskuldig daarvan dat jy ‘n tipiese arrogante WP-ondersteuner is!

#129 WP Till I Die:
Stop I am holding my sides!
16 Oct 2009, 13:12 pm
#20 Transformation: I was wondering where Ashley found himself. I now only realise that he has taken up Sheriff’s position, being the wingman to the Senior Blogger. Sheriff must be absolutely gutted.

Friends, fellow rogues, soothsayers, non-conformists, misfits and rabble rousers, I stand here before you with the fire in my heart and the dedicated faith of a red Disa flower. I hoop all will be well tomorrow in Hoopsland.
I hoop the supporters are going to be so magical that strange things happen to the Bulls. ( Like 5 red cards!!
). I hoop the streeptruie can doen a ding wat sing.
I hoop and hoop that the hoops pull through and punch above their weight.
Fanks for tuning in. Now where are my rizzlas?
16 Oct 2009, 13:17 pm
WPtid,
yeah and your new name: Mustapha Daliel. Oh and i forgot the about minor medical procedure?
16 Oct 2009, 13:20 pm

No potions to dispense o wise sage? I wanna spike the bulls energy drinks.
16 Oct 2009, 13:23 pm
#136 The Jinxta: Please gooi some more mojo there! We’ll need lots of that stuff tomorrow, BUT stranger things have happened …
16 Oct 2009, 13:23 pm
#139 Slappes:
Actually, I’ll have you know it’s Mustafa Kant.
And they cut to the chase, they cut it fine, they cut corners, they cut me some slack – and, to cut a long story short, I had to cut my losses.
16 Oct 2009, 13:27 pm
#140 WP Till I Die: howzit!
i see you were in durbs the other day?
never enter my stomping ground again without drinking the traditional offering please.
my kingdom is small, but it still has rules.

It’s done. Suzy went deep undercover a few days ago and has been monitoring the Bulls camp in a v-e-r-y below the radar way. She knows ex-acker-mi-ly what to do. Tonight at supper time she’ll increase the dose of anti- Bull-dust sprinkles on the teams “chow” at the hotel.
Tomorrow **** will fly as all hell breaks loose and WP will stride through dem Bulls with effervescent joy as the Mutha City goes bedonnered in paroxysms of pleasure and delight!
16 Oct 2009, 13:30 pm
#143 rangerman:
It was in March, for a wedding, rangerman – spent most of my time in ‘Toti and Winkelspruit!
16 Oct 2009, 13:30 pm
ag i dont mind who the sharks play IF we win tomorrow.
a streeptruie brigade in the tank would be just fine.
but will they travel in the numbers that the bulls fans do?
huh? will they?
16 Oct 2009, 13:31 pm
#145 Slappes:
It was a cut and dried procedure.
16 Oct 2009, 13:33 pm
#146 WP Till I Die: aaah…winklespruit.
another kingdom unfortunately.
they have different rules down there but are accomodating about a sly pint or 12.
the northeaster does blow the smell of pollution their way for the majority of the year unfortunately.
bygones then.
but if province make the final, then we braai at the tank eh?
streeptruie round the fire, imagine!
16 Oct 2009, 13:34 pm
#146 WP Till I Die:

16 Oct 2009, 13:38 pm
#151 WP Till I Die: bad idea.
the south coast is a backward locale foreshore but it is full of chilled out dudes.
16 Oct 2009, 13:39 pm
#147 rangerman: hiyas boet ^5 , your nerves ok for 2morrow??
btw did you go diving recently in durbs??
16 Oct 2009, 13:43 pm
WPtid,
cut to the point, sharp as a knife I see.
16 Oct 2009, 13:45 pm
#156 Slappes:
Unfortunately the work performed didn’t quite cut the mustard.
16 Oct 2009, 13:48 pm
#156 Slappes:
And I have a tip for you, cut your coat according to the cloth you have.
16 Oct 2009, 13:56 pm
#153 sharks_lover: howdy boet.
nah, will hopefully dive next week but the sea is a mess at this time of year.
16 Oct 2009, 13:59 pm
toti and winkels are blue bull retirement villages with a few local low lifes thrown in.
don’t throw a line when the chads are dik – the retrenched spoories ous get violent – it’s their territory
16 Oct 2009, 13:59 pm
#157 rangerman: thought so thats why i asked , because of all the rain the water is pretty mercky , all the **** flowing into the ocean from the rivers too
16 Oct 2009, 14:00 pm
#160 charo:
Yes, I got that vibe when I was there. Man, was the booze cheap though!
16 Oct 2009, 14:00 pm
#158 charo:
hiyas charo , how ru doing mate?? ghana still treating you well ??
16 Oct 2009, 14:02 pm
#134 John1976: lol…i don’t know hey, last night sheriff was pretty concerned about the well-being of asha1, you know him being the only quota blogger there on the other site. I still have no idea how HQ allowed one of their finest slip through the cracks
16 Oct 2009, 14:11 pm
#161 sharks_lover:
good thanks.
great excitement here – ghana play brazil tonight in the final of the u20′s soccer.
huge big smiles everywhere.
16 Oct 2009, 14:11 pm
#160 WP Till I Die:
that is all that counts really…
16 Oct 2009, 14:17 pm
#162 Transformation: I doubt it that he is merely concerns about Ashley’s wellbeing. he has some personal interest in getting Ashley away from RT. This would clear the way for him to take up his favourite position as the wingman to the Senior Blogger and perhaps being the only quota blogger.
16 Oct 2009, 14:18 pm
#160 WP Till I Die:
yeah, like r10 a quart.
as opposed to r25 a pint of windhoek draft at fireman’s.
and you can drink the quart in the sun…takes effect faster lol
16 Oct 2009, 14:26 pm
2 great games for sure, would be nice to see WP get into a final, but cant see them beating the Bulls, on the plus-side they do have home adv and burger off the bench.
sharks/freestate should be close, but with bismarck and deysel back, again you gotta put your buck on the favourites.
16 Oct 2009, 16:50 pm
Peter will once again be awesome thank you very much… so he doesn’t drop kick as often as Morne but on everything else he beats him… or comes insanely close
Have your say
