Saffas abroad

Keo.co.za looks at the South Africans who performed in European club action this weekend.

Springboks centre Jean de Villiers opened his try-scoring account for defending European champions Munster against Treviso. He’ll be pleased with his overall contribution as well, as he was a constant threat to the Italians and a creative force in their 41-10 win in Limerick. Marius Goosen and Corniel van Zyl could not make an impact for the visitors.

Sadly, De Villiers’ one time Springbok team-mate Marius Joubert will play no further role in Clermont’s European Cup campaign. He missed Sunday’s defeat to the Ospreys. The injury comes shortly after his return from a lengthy spell on the sideline at the end of last season, which resulted in him missing the Top 14 final.

Darling of Toulouse, Shaun Sowerby, scored a try in his side’s dramatic 23-19 come-from-behind win over Harlequins. Daan Human was a third minute introduction off the wood and became a dominant force as the match progressed.

Meanwhile, there were just a handful of other saffas who tasted victory for their clubs. Springbok prop Brian Mujati came off the bench for Northampton to score in their 24-13 loss to Perpignan. Juandre Kruger (lock) and Regardt Dreyer (hooker) also turned out for the Saints, while Gerrie Brits continued to impress with Perpignan.

Gerhard Vosloo’s Brive went down 36-13 to Leinster, despite the flanker, who will qualify to play for France shortly, scoring a try. Frans Steyn didn’t feature in Racing Metro’s 20-16 defeat to Bayonne, but Jacques Cronje and the lesser known Ashley Clarke played at No 8 and openside flank respectively. Sam Gerber got Bayonne into an early lead in the match.

In the Magners League BJ Botha and Robbie Diack were on the losing side as Edinburgh defeated Ulster 17-13. There was also defeats for the saffa-laden Saracens, as they went down to Toulon in the European challenge Cup on Thursday. Wikus van Heerden scored a try for Saracens while Derick Hougaard kicked three penalties and two conversions. However, it wasn’t enough to oust the Joe van Nielerk-led French side.

Last year, I meant last season. The final was less than 6 months ago.
