Southland edge Canterbury

Southland ground out a 9-3 win over Canterbury to qualify for the semi-finals of the New Zealand Cup.

It was the defending champions who scored the first points as flyhalf Stephen Brett slotted a drop goal to give Canterbury a 3-0 lead. Southland’s pivot Robbie Robinson then converted a penalty in the 37th minute to leave the score level at the break.

In the second stanza, Robinson kicked his team into a 9-3 lead with another two penalties. Southland followed with an impressive defensive effort to hold on for the win.

Southland are now assured of a play-off place and won the Ranfurly Shield for the first time in 50 years in the process. Canterbury were already certain of a home semi-final with the win over Hawke’s Bay last week.

Get that boy Robbie Robinson in a Black jersey asap, he’s simply a natural. We will see alot more of him come 2011, fer sure. Better than Cruden, fer starters.

With the AB’s out of the picture, the Air NZ Cup (NPC),
would appear to be there for the taking.

Good luck Southland and Hawkes Bay.

9-3 and a drop-goal too? I thought it was all about ‘exciting running rugby’ in NZ…

Haha, Go the Stags! Well done boys.

9-3? Surely this wasnt as boring as the rugby the Springboks got crucified for playing?

Must have been action packed, with the kicks at goal and all…

Please someone explain the Ranfurly shield to me

  • 8.cane: Reply to this comment

    #7 Lions_Soutie:

The Ranfurly Shield is NZ’s oldest existing National Rugby Trophy.

    Whoever holds the Shield,
    Accepts Challengers.

These Accepted Challengers, are traditionally ONLY home games. Only the Brave (read stupid) take the Shield on Tour.

P.S. Given the choice of an NPC Title, or winning the Ranfurly Shield. 100% would take the Shield.
The players sleep with it. Drink with it…….

    Too right Grunter.

And it’s great to see it leave the Famous Five (Waikato, Canterbury, etc).

I lived in Marlborough back in the 70′s when they held it.

Oh happy days for the little fish in the big pond.

My fellow Southlander mate just rang. He was at the match. Said it was an extremely exciting match, huge D, but lots of thrilling stuff. As for Robinson, other than superb kicking both for position and at posts, he was fairly average. The kudos goes with the pack, McIntosh & Berkhuis the stars.

Fook it, Im off to the boozer to calm my nerves. Do you think I can find a pub in Edinburgh that serves a nice cold jug of Montieths ?

Montieths…………….now you are talking. I was a Greymouth lad……………..Stole 4 bottles from the Brewery when I was 15.

Montieths the finest drop brewed in NZ, better than the runs-inducing Speights and that insipid Tuis ****. I would have said Black Macs as the best until they scaled it back to a 4% beer and all the flavour went with it.

‘Stand-in Canterbury captain Tim Bateman paid credit to the victors’ resilience.

“We didn’t put the points on the board really, did we?” second five-eighth Bateman said.’

gee, theyre smart those fullas in Canterbury huh….

Sorry to bud in in a southlander conversation, but who are the other tweo teams in the semi’s or is that not yet established?

Southland & Canterbury both confirmed Semifinalists.

The remaining 2 spots still up for grabs between Waikato, Hawkes Bay, Wellington, Auckland and possibly Bay of Plenty – results from this final round depending.

Has been a really exciting NPC this season, mainly because of the smaller provinces (HB, Southland, Manawatu, BoP) all having their moments. Even minnow Tasman beat Auckland. As a result, viewership is up 75%.

I think most neutrals would like to see Hawkes Bay take it as they play an exciting attacking brand of footy. They got nearly 20k people for the Canterbury match, which for a town (Napier) of only 60,000 is pretty good. The deserved a draw too against the Red’n'Blacks featuring all their ABs but their last min try was denied them, altho replays showed it was fair. Zac Guildford, new AB, has been scoring tries for fun.

Southland the real surprise package, there mostly thru sheer mongrel.

‘style’ ? a Kiwi, talking rugby, using english ?

Im just here for the footy banter. Love Bok rugby too. Thought those CC semis were fooken brilliant. Subbing on that Fijian bloke was about as smart as subbing on O’Gara in the 2nd Test, no ?

To be honest, on yr ‘similar style’ criteria, youre all looking like the same blogger so far. Maybe you are, and its just the 2 of us…

Is Puma an Argentinian or a MILF ?

Be sure to go up to Dundee and Aberdeen some time, cold as hell around this time of year but a good night out. Glasgow’s good too if you can stick the accent and the fake tan. :)

hey mate, I might be pissed but Im not talking to myself !

Yeah, Im in the oil trade so most of my work is actually in Aberdeen. Like the City of Stone altho feels a bit austere compared to Edinburgh. Fook me but I cant understand a word those Galswegians say. Keen to catch some football there tho.

Foods a bit dodgy up here….might have to go out and shoot me a haggis.
