Wellington secure home semi
23 Oct 2009
Wellington will host Southland in the play-offs after beating Tasman 22-14 on Friday.
The victory sees the Lions finishing second behind Canterbury, who are waiting on Saturday’s results to determine the fourth semi-finalist.
Hawke’s Bay scored a 32-13 bonus-point over Northland to give themselves a good chance of claiming that fourth spot, but will hope Waikato don’t record a bonus-point win of their own against Auckland on Saturday.
If Waikato clout Auckland, they will finish in fourth place. According to New Zealand Cup rules, if teams are tied in the final standings, the side that won the corresponding league match will advance. Waikato beat Hawke’s Bay 30-22 earlier in the season, and so would claim fourth place in that event.
Southland are level with Hawke’s Bay on 41 points, but are guaranteed to finish third as they beat both Hawke’s Bay and Waikato this year.

Good old Wellington. Just setting themselves up for yet another fall come the knockout games.
Fingers crossed that the Magpies make it thru, by far the most attractive team to watch and the most loyal supporters too. Go the Bay !

Your Lot….The Stags, will still have hangovers come Semi’s.
As far as I can reason, it is all done and dusted.
Canterbury at Home to Southland.
Wellington to Host Hawkes Bay.
2000 people at the Airport to Welcome Home the Stags. Shield Parade next week.

Oooops, I didn’t read paragraph 4 of JC’s article.
Perhaps it’s not done and dusted.
I was basing my premise on points for and against.

My email and mobile simply hasnt stopped since yest. In fact, it seems to be gathering pace.
I like this thrilling extract from todays Southland Times. Altho I do struggle to believe there were 3000 there unless they closed the meatworks momentarily.
“Up to 3000 Southlanders crammed Invercargill Airport this morning to welcome home the drought-breaking Ranfurly Shield-winning Southland Stags.
The enthusiasm reached such a fever pitch the welcome got off to a faltering start when an Air New Zealand flight touched down about 11.15am.
The cheers were interrupted by the airport’s intercom.
“Your attention ladies and gentlemen — this is NOT the Ranfurly Shield flight,” the announcer said. “This is NOT the Ranfurly Shield flight.”
Undaunted, the crowd erupted again a short time later when the actual flight carrying the team, which beat Canterbury 9-3 last night, touched down.
Chants of “Southland, Southland” followed later by “where’s the timber” and “show us the Log o’ Wood” greeted the players as they filed off the plane, across the tarmac and into the terminal.’.

Well winning the Shield is obviously cause for celebration Southland-wide but as for it being the ‘highlight’, well that may just open you up to accusations of ignorance. Once the local auithorities have had their protests quelled, then we can look forward to the Big One:-
“Oct 22nd: A contest that involves children seeing how far they can throw dead rabbits has been banned in New Zealand following outcry from animal welfare campaigners.
The annual ‘Rabbit tTrow’ in the South Island town of Waiau has been a tradition for years but officials have had to cancel the event following complaints from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).
An animal cruelty inspector with the charity, Charles Cadwallader, said: “Do you throw your dead grandmother around for a joke at her funeral?”
The bizarre competition is part of the town’s annual pig hunt – a highlight in the calendar for Waiau’s 400 residents.
Organiser Jo Moriarty claims banning the bunny contest is “political correctness gone mad”.
She said: “You know, the children of the community here are fantastic, they love their animals.”
