Bulls 36 Cheetahs 24
Keo.co.za brought you live commentary from the Currie Cup final at Loftus.
80 mins: The final hooter blows, but the Cheetahs continue to attack for a consolation try. However, the Bulls steal possession at the breakdown and Du Preez clears to end the match. The Bulls raise their arms in celebration. The Bulls are the Currie Cup champions!
78 mins: The Cheetahs are awarded a scrum 5m out from the Bulls’ advantage line. Brussow passes the ball to Bosman, but the centre knocks-on the ball in their last chance of comeback.
73 mins: Strauss is sin-binned for verbal abuse on the assistant referee after a marginal call that denies the Cheetahs a try. The Bulls are now 12 points ahead with a one-man advantage for the remaining seven minutes of the match.
68 mins: After 14 minutes of attack from both sides, frustration creates tension between the players. Richardt Strauss is penalised for foul play after the whistle and Steyn adds another three points to the Bulls’ tally. 36-24 to the Bulls!
54 mins: Steyn keeps the Bulls’ score ticking as he kicks another three-pointer after Potgieter is penalised for holding on. 33-24 to the Bulls!
49 mins: Potgieter kicks a 25m drop goal to reduce the Bulls’ lead to six points. 30-24 to the Bulls!
45 mins: Cheetahs try! The Cheetahs’ pack turns the Bulls’ forwards in the scrum. Heinrich Brussow steals the ball and offloads to Viljoen, who passes to Nico Breedt and the lock crosses the whitewash. Potgieter kicks over the conversion. 21-30 to the Bulls!
44 mins: Steyn picks up where he left off as he kicks the first points of the second half through a penalty. 30-14 to the Bulls!
Half-time: Bulls 27 Cheetahs 14
39 mins: From a 22m lineout, the Bulls create position in the midfield. Steyn then cleverly slots a drop kick as the hooter blows. 27-14 to the Bulls!
35 mins: Cheetahs try! The Cheetahs are awarded a penalty in the Bulls’ danger zone after the home side is ajudged to be offside. Joubert takes the quick penalty tap and the ball is passed wide to Corne Uys, who scores in the corner. Potgieter comes to the party as he slots the challenging attempt from the right touchline. 24-14 to the Bulls!
31 mins: Cheetahs try! From a scrum 5m from the Bulls’ try line, Ashley Johnson sets up Bosman for a run. The Bulls’ defence holds firm, but Frans Viljoens bursts through in the second phase. Potgieter adds the vital two points. 24-7 to the Bulls!
25 mins: Potgieter is penalised for kneeing a Bulls player at the set-phase. Steyn converts the massive 53m goal attempt to extend the lead. 24-0 to the Bulls!
18 mins: Bulls try! Deon Stegmann poaches the ball from Danwel Demas at the breakdown. Du Preez again creates an opportunity with the boot as he chips the ball over the Cheetahs’ defence and Habana chases. The Springbok wing outruns JP Joubert to the ball and touches down for his second. Steyn continues his fine kicking performance as he slots the difficult conversion from the left touchline. 21-0 to the Bulls!
14 mins: Bulls try! After the Cheetahs apply the pressure, Meyer Bosman loses the ball forward and the Bulls steal possession. The home side then pass the ball wide and run at the back reeling Cheetahs’ defence. After two offloads from Zane Kirchner and Du Preez, Bryan Habana has a clear run to the line. Steyn converts for the two points. 14-0 to the Bulls
7 mins: The Cheetahs are awarded a penalty in front of the posts moments after the restart. However, Potgieter pulls his first attempt wide.
5 mins: Bulls try! After a try-saving tackle from Lionel Mapoe, the Bulls are awarded a penalty and take a quick tap. Fourie du Preez then chips the ball to unmarked wing Francois Hougaard, who dives over for the first score of the match. Steyn bags the extra two points. 7-0 to the Bulls
1 min: High kickoff from pivot Jacques-Louis Potgieter, which is claimed and controlled by Victor Matfield. Morne Steyn clears, but does not find touch. The Cheetahs run at the Bulls’ defence, but the ball is knocked-on after several phases.

October 31st, 2009 at 5:53 pm
#37 David: I only tuned in just before the first habana try, apols. But I reckon when they were dominating the Bulls scrum inside the 22 they should’ve launched a strike move, the ball was eventually turned over.
October 31st, 2009 at 5:53 pm
3 tries, its all over in 10 mins, bladdy cheetahs had 76 percent possession.
JL stepping like a hot-stepper, but its all over.

October 31st, 2009 at 6:02 pm
Well prove me wrong.
October 31st, 2009 at 6:02 pm
It has just been bad tactics by the Cheetahs. Trying to play wide to avoid the Bulls forwards backfired in a big way. You Always risk turnovers when you play wide from first phase. Heinrich Brussow is a turnover specialist, not a ball protection specialist.
October 31st, 2009 at 6:02 pm
blue bulle now blikseming much heralded cheetahs scrum – guthro is monstering wp.
October 31st, 2009 at 6:03 pm

Morne droppie, 27-12. Cheetahs will be glad it isn’t a try, I think the Cheetahs get stronger as the game goes on, full of running.

October 31st, 2009 at 6:24 pm
great game so far
October 31st, 2009 at 6:25 pm
FS giving up about 15 kg in the forwards yet still drukking these bully brekers scrum
Bulls lucky in the early exchanges Fs doing all the play and getting turned over at critical times, Bosman guilty of giving away possession couple times in Bulls 22.
Bulls going to need that 19 points early lead cause Cheetah’s gonna come storming back at them.
Stats show Fs dominance, score board shows that you don’t need territory or possession to win.
October 31st, 2009 at 6:26 pm
kaplan should’ve never been made referee, why is he always consultitng victor?
October 31st, 2009 at 6:28 pm
#96 Transformation: Kaplans reffing well imo
October 31st, 2009 at 6:29 pm
#95 skopskiet:
“Bulls lucky in the early exchanges Fs doing all the play and getting turned over at critical times, Bosman guilty of giving away possession couple times in Bulls 22.”
There was nothing lucky about the turnovers in the beginning. It was because the Cheetahs were going very wide every single phase, and if you do that, you are going to get turned over.
The possession stats just show that the Bulls have been giving the ball away alot. However, they usually gave the ball away as a result of scoring points.
October 31st, 2009 at 6:30 pm
Lucky Bulls Cheetah’s their own worst enemy so far, if didn’t cough up possession on attack so often Bulls wouldn’t even be in it now. Been all Cheetah’s both territory and possession, Bulls scoring off turnover ball.
Come Cheetah’s stick it to them this half.
October 31st, 2009 at 6:33 pm
Bulls 30 – FS 14
October 31st, 2009 at 6:34 pm
#99 skopskiet:
I guess that’s a good point. The Bulls are lucky the Cheetahs had bad tactics to begin with. Now it will be interesting to see if the Cheetahs can turn it around.

October 31st, 2009 at 6:36 pm
Crickey, the Cheetah’s front row is making a big statement
October 31st, 2009 at 6:37 pm
Kaplan having a kak game giving Habana first try when Fdp pass was about 3 mt forward. Also giving Bulls marginal breakdown calls all game long. Must be a gold watch in it somewhere.
Cheetah’s going to f.up these bully brekers big time. Kyk maar net.
October 31st, 2009 at 6:37 pm
‘Os had daggers in his eyes’ = skinstad.
its over for the bulls.
October 31st, 2009 at 6:38 pm

October 31st, 2009 at 6:40 pm
Naka must be eating his fingers
October 31st, 2009 at 6:41 pm
What did I tell you Kaplan pulling Fs back for certain try but couldn’t see the Habana forward pass early on. Should have been Cheetah’s in lead by now.
October 31st, 2009 at 6:41 pm
Brussow must be the best player in the country. Surely!!
October 31st, 2009 at 6:42 pm
#118 skopskiet: ball went forward in fairness

October 31st, 2009 at 6:45 pm
#124 Transformation:
Spies just stole a lineout, got a breakdown turnover, and he’s beating tacklers. How can Ashley Johnson be having a better game?
October 31st, 2009 at 6:46 pm
yessus, steyn is a robot.
October 31st, 2009 at 6:46 pm
Skopskiet,

Adriaan Straaus is playing a great game as well.
October 31st, 2009 at 6:50 pm
Skopskiet, feel like complaining again? Its been almost 10 posts since you last whinged about nothing?
October 31st, 2009 at 6:53 pm
Cheetahs starting to look a little tired to me
October 31st, 2009 at 6:54 pm
BIG HIT,
Tough to play at that level for a full 80. Unless you are Brussouw
October 31st, 2009 at 6:54 pm
brussow is player of the year!
October 31st, 2009 at 6:55 pm
Skopskiet – did you see Kaplan run into the ball…Sabotage I tell you. Call Oregon Hoskins and tell him! Muhahahahahaha
October 31st, 2009 at 6:56 pm
TRANSFORMATION – Totally agree. I think that Morne challenges that as well, purely for his BMT versus the Lions.
October 31st, 2009 at 6:56 pm
Brussow looks injured! Rush him to the nearest hospital, now!
October 31st, 2009 at 6:58 pm
mapoe is a BOK written all over him….simon borchardt must eat his words
October 31st, 2009 at 6:58 pm
Playing France in couple weeks time and these guys f.ng each other up here both Brussow and Mapoe limping now, not good for Bok’s.
October 31st, 2009 at 6:58 pm
Juries on?
October 31st, 2009 at 6:58 pm
**** mapoe looks the real deal, could have been good for the tour.
October 31st, 2009 at 6:58 pm
First time I have really watched Mapoe, and the good thing is that he goes looking for work, and does not just sit on his wing.
October 31st, 2009 at 7:00 pm
SKPOOIE – a post without complaining?
Well done , loose that Pommie tag!
October 31st, 2009 at 7:00 pm

October 31st, 2009 at 7:02 pm
CAB,
Never seen that it the rule book.
SKOPSKIET – is this not just a case of bad officiating from Kaplan?
October 31st, 2009 at 7:02 pm
Fs shot their bolt early on no more gas left in the tank. Only prick with gas left in his gab is this twit Bullet.
October 31st, 2009 at 7:03 pm
Great comeback Skopskiet, I enjoyed that one!
October 31st, 2009 at 7:05 pm
#155 skopskiet: yeah those soft tries at the start killed them, they’d be right in it now otherwise
October 31st, 2009 at 7:05 pm
Hope Mapoe is good to tour. That lad is the next Habana in the making.
October 31st, 2009 at 7:05 pm
Whoever said that FS supporters had no sense of humour did not know what they were talking about.
Now Skoppie – go have a beer, tuck your shirt into your sarafi suit and patrol the fence of the farm.
October 31st, 2009 at 7:06 pm
Hopefully Mapoe is going to Europe. At least one game…

Kaplan denying Cheetah’s yet again certainly a gold watch in this one.
October 31st, 2009 at 7:07 pm
Skopskiet,
Seriously now, when has Kaplan denied the Cheetah’s?
October 31st, 2009 at 7:08 pm
Kaplan just killed the cats
October 31st, 2009 at 7:08 pm
The ball has to travel five metres. It doesn’t matter where the player is standing. You can’t reach over the 5 metre line to grab it.
October 31st, 2009 at 7:09 pm
I would say that Straus has just killed the Cats
October 31st, 2009 at 7:09 pm
Kaplan just ruined the rest of the game congratulations Jonathan.
Cheers for Kaplan. Its all over now baby blue.
Currie cup goes to Tshwane
October 31st, 2009 at 7:09 pm
SKOPSKIET,
Was it not the players breaking the rules who ruined the rest of the game?
October 31st, 2009 at 7:09 pm
If not for Kaplan’s cheating, the Bulls sould have won by 50!
October 31st, 2009 at 7:10 pm
You can’t criticise a ref for making the right decisions. That’s his job.
October 31st, 2009 at 7:12 pm
COHERENCE,
No room for logic here with SKOPSKIET.
October 31st, 2009 at 7:13 pm
lol, wp nel like a little sherman tank.
October 31st, 2009 at 7:13 pm
Too little too late shouldn’t have given them 19 points on a plate.
Bulls poppies now thats something worth coming to the party for.
October 31st, 2009 at 7:13 pm
Did the Cheetahs just do the Bulls scrum with 7 men?
October 31st, 2009 at 7:14 pm
#170 BULLET:
Atleast he supported PDV when he was being blamed for… winning the Lions series?
October 31st, 2009 at 7:14 pm
It’s blame the ref time!! Sponsored by: Cheetahs supporters.
October 31st, 2009 at 7:15 pm
Game set and match!
October 31st, 2009 at 7:15 pm
SKOPSKIET – keep your pommie hands off our Blou Bulle Poppies.
COHERENCE – post 174? Not sure I understand what you mean.
October 31st, 2009 at 7:16 pm
Yip, well played Bulls, helluva season, probably the best team in the world at the moment.
October 31st, 2009 at 7:16 pm
I would like to see Nico Breedt in the Bok squad as a replacement for Bakkies, is he too old?
October 31st, 2009 at 7:16 pm
Thanks for coming Bully brekers got lucky just like in Cape Town two weeks ago.
Brekers lift the cup. Too bad.
October 31st, 2009 at 7:18 pm
Sore losers? Sheeez FS are a sad bunch – wanting to fight after the final whistle
October 31st, 2009 at 7:18 pm
#175 Ezee-23: there are no Cheetahs supporters here yet.
Congrats Bulls, deserved win. Congrats to the Cheetahs too, some sensational rugby played in the last few weeks.
October 31st, 2009 at 7:18 pm
Well done Bulls. Cheetahs – you went down with courage.
Both teams did there jersey & country proud.
October 31st, 2009 at 7:18 pm
Hugh Bladen comment of the evening during the handbag sling after the game:
“Get Bakkies in there, he will sort them out!”
October 31st, 2009 at 7:19 pm
Dominant aspect of the Bulls’ play:
Goal kicking
My prediction:
Goal kicking
Dominant aspect of the Cheetahs’ play:
Poor discipline
My prediction:
Breakdown turnovers.
I guess Heinrich Brussow becomes irrelevant when his team is giving away penalties.
October 31st, 2009 at 7:23 pm
Take Wian Du Preez and Nico Breedt and Lionel Mapoe and Richard or the other Strauss on tour. Maybe WP Nel too. You see Nel’s stats he’s only 98 kg little light for a TH. Gurthro is 118 kg in comparison.

#187 skopskiet:
good selection, wonder how old nico breed is?
October 31st, 2009 at 7:29 pm
Ashley Johnson not a bad option for a tour spot too.
Lets see who gets a call up.
October 31st, 2009 at 7:29 pm
nah he’s older than bakkies, rather take sykes.
October 31st, 2009 at 7:35 pm
Locks and Props don’t have age limitations they mature around 30 and go on well for another few years after that Nico Breedt playing better rugby now than earlier in his career same as with Anton Van Zyl is already 29 but a good shout for a tour spot.
October 31st, 2009 at 7:37 pm
Another boring win!
October 31st, 2009 at 7:38 pm
true, but bakkies is even younger than breedt, 31 is pushing the envelope even for a no 4.
October 31st, 2009 at 7:40 pm
Unsung heroes of the game
1.) Demas.
2.) Kirchner
October 31st, 2009 at 7:49 pm
Damn, the Dark Side wins again.
