I agree, Lawrence is probably the best there is at the moment. But you cant have doubt 1 minute and then be sure enough to award a try the next. No, thats poor decision-making. Otherwise, bar a few minor incidents he was good. But that 1 decision – which can affect a result – was very very poor.

Hynes clearly loses the ball after grounding. Only debatable point was whether the grounding hit the line. I sympathise with the *** TMO because not 1 camera angle was conclusive on that point. In fact, probably the worst camera work for the whole game I can remember. They might be abl to invent the stuff, but they cant use it. Atleast they have 10yrs to practise before RWC 2019.

Lawrence allows the game to flow and unlike a whole lot of referees involved in the Air NZ Cup does not miss forward passes or become whistle happy like his namesake Bryce!

Must say that a ref who requires a TMO 1 minute because he was unsure only to give it the next deserves demotion, you cant reward doubt to the attacking team. He was also blowing some earlier pens that were simply wrong eg Cowan kicking a ball that was clearly out of the scrum ?!

Well done ABs, great start to the tour. Also well done to the new coaching roles – lineout and kickoffs were better, Smiths defence held well with only the dodgy Try-NoTry ruling breaching it (looked like Hynes lost control to me before it hit the line), and attack was excellent other than 1 or 2 obstructions.
