Wellington surge into final
31 Oct 2009
Wellington beat Southland 34-21 in the second semi-final of the New Zealand Cup on Saturday.
Southland scored first through hooker Jason Routledge and took a 7-0 lead early in the first half. However, All Blacks scrumhalf Piri Weepu kicked his side ahead with three penalties.
Wing David Smith then extended Wellington’s lead with a try and Weepu bagged the extras. The No 9 kicked another three pointer to make it 19-7 at the break.
Two tries from scrumhalf Jimmy Cowan and centre Kenny Lynn brought Southland back into the game with the score at 22-21 in Wellington’s favour, but that would be the last points for the visitors.
A late brace from replacement hooker Dane Coles sealed the victory for Wellington, who will now face defending champions Canterbury in the final.

#4 schalla: you are right – it was his brother Scott scoring the tries in Wellington.
