Wallabies down Gloucester
4 Nov 2009
The Wallabies opened their European tour with an easy 36-5 win against Gloucester on Tuesday.
Robbie Deans fielded a second-string side to face the struggling English club and produced a mixed performance with their lineout still a concern.
The Wallabies, however, still did enough to win game comfortably as they scored five tries. Wing Drew Mitchell grabbed a late second-half brace, while centres Ryan Cross and Tyrone Smith, and pivot Quade Cooper also crossed the whitewash.
Cooper was the Wallabies’ Man of the Match as he scored a personal tally of 16 points. The flyhalf also spearheaded the attack and played a pivotal role in each try.
The visitors started off strongly as they were up 10-0 in the first quarter. Quade opened the scoring with an early penalty, and set up Cross for the opening try with a cross kick eight minutes later.
Gloucester pivot Carlos Spencer then replicated the Wallabies’ move with a cross kick of his own, which put wing Freddie Burns in the corner. However, that proved to be Gloucester only points of the game.
A swift set-piece move from a scrum between Cooper and Cross allowed Smith in for the Wallabies’ second five-pointer. Cooper then converted to make the score 17-5 at the break.
The Wallabies struggled to build momentum in the second stanza, but they scored three tries in the final quarter as Mitchell touched down twice and Cooper dived over in the last minute.
The Wallabies will now travel to Twickenham for their first international against England on Saturday.

Hmmm, “Cooper was the Wallabies’ Man of the Match as he scored a personal tally of 16 points.”
Yet Sports24 says, “Cooper’s late try gave him a personal haul of 20 points.”
Who to believe?

#12 Ruggaluvva: the Namibian, Sharks, Southern Kings & Wallaby supporter: There were four tries scored by other players, which equals 20 points. Quade Cooper scored the rest. 36 – 20 = 16
