Cheetahs add to hooker depth
5 Nov 2009
The Cheetahs have signed hooker Skipper Badenhorst from the Sharks on a two-year deal.
Badenhorst has been brought in to replace Richardt Strauss, who has decided to continue his career at Irish club Leinster, while the former was the third-choice hooker at the Sharks behind Bismarck du Plessis and Craig Burden.
Adriaan Strauss will be considered the incumbent No 2, which means Badenhorst will have to compete with Griquas hooker Rayno Barnes for a place in the match 22.
The Cheetahs have more depth in the No 2 position as Shimlas hooker Hans Grobler has been included in their 42-man provisional Super 14 squad. They also have rookies PW van Vuuren and Frank Herne for back-up.

#2 Dunx: I just hope its good signings! Craig Burden is way better than Skipper, less yellow cards too! Worried though, all are moving out, but who is coming in?

I think the Sharks are sucking up to the Cheetahs in order to ensure that they get Brussow.
It’s an interesting situation that Brussow will be in at the end of 2010, if he he hasn’t already moved to the Sharks. With 2011 being the WC year, his agent will be telling him that his value will rocket after the WC and the NH clubs will be lining up with some amazing offers. A 2 or 3 year overseas contract will set him up for life and he can still return in time to qualify for the 2016 WC.

I reckon only Thailand has more hookers than SA at the moment.

so how much does these hookers earn – cause seems to me everyone is either buying one or interessted in buying one.

#4 David: I am thinking on the same wavelength as you:
1. Swap of Monty for Wessels, the Brussow to be, is I believe a trade on the Cheetahs part to get the Sharks to abandon their active pursuit of Brussow (and we all know the OFS boys love the sea
) until the end of S14/2010.
2. Sending some of our players that we wouldn’t use any way to assist the depth issues at the Cheetahs, also keeps them cool when the Sharks do take Brussow, etc.
Why the Cheetahs would want Skipper has me puzzled.

#4 David: Somehow I don’t think Brussow will whant to move overseas. But you never know!

When the Sharks told them they’d sell them their Skipper, they probably thought they were getting John Smit.

Cheetahs are short sighted, they should’ve taken the R2 mill they would’ve got for Brussouw and then they could contract other players, instead if Brussouw does leave next yr then the cheetahs wont see a cent
5 Nov 2009, 08:39 am
Brussow will never go to the sharks.

#9 David: ha ha. And because he’s from the bargain bin, there’s a no-return policy.

I know for a fact that there were talks between the Unions and the players agents!

Katman, that is exactly what we are saying on Sharksworld

Geez whats going on – the Cheetahs are signing Sharks players??? Next headline: Cheetahs sign Bakkies Botha. rofl.
But seriously – this is very interesting. This should start to go the way of soccer – when you want a player, offer the union that has him the money to take him. That money can then be spent again on other good players.
5 Nov 2009, 09:22 am
Hmmm… let’s see. Second year the Sharks failed to buy Brussow. Are you really sure it is on the cards? If he wanted to go, he would have.

#10 ShaunMichaels: I agree with you whole heartedly. They could have bought two or three solid players in positions where we lack (lock, flyhalf or centre). Selling Brossouw will be a loss, but the Cheetahs have more than enough good loosies. But, bolstering the side in other areas, even when that means loosing Brossouw, would have been better for the collective.
Skipper and Monty not to bad. I don’t think they are being seen as 1st choice players, but rather as solid back-up with S14 experience. Our player depth is what has tripped us up in the past.

#18 fsjakes: They will most probably play Vodacom cup until something serious happens. I don’t think you’ll see them in the S14.
5 Nov 2009, 09:26 am
PS, as for the headline, if you watched Carte Blanche last Sunday, you’ll know there are more than enough hookers here.
5 Nov 2009, 09:28 am
#19 Bouts: Agreed. At least when something serious does happen, the cheetahs will have good players with experience to fill the gap.

The Sharks are losing a hell of a lot of depth. I don’t mind seeing us clearing the deadweight, but it would be a lot more comforting to hear of a few better quality replacements coming in. We’ve brought in Mostert, hopefully Alberts and Ludik. An outside chance of Brussouw. Shaft Andries Strauss for a quality inside centre. Peter Grant should return home
5 Nov 2009, 09:39 am
Ja, good signing. Herne and V Vuuren are both brilliant prospects, but still very wet behind the ears.
Skipper will give solid back up. He is a typical Free State hooker – not particularly mobile, but strong as hell.
Good signing. Now we need to get Albert vd Berg !!!
5 Nov 2009, 09:48 am
23. Cheetah Champs: Albert vd Berg? rofl no man. Get real. He’s too old. FS needs continuity, long term signings. Albert is good, but he doesn’t have many seasons left in him. We just got Rudi Matthee. Played Craven Week with the likes of Stegman, Brussow, Straus and the rest. Watch this space…
Incidentally, I think AvdB is the least injured player in SA – played something like 4 seasons of Super 14 and CC without an injury! Amazing.

#24 VyfSlot:
Of course he doesn’t get injured. The water boy gets more game time than he does.

#25. DAVID: lol

#5 katman: You’re the man!
5 Nov 2009, 10:27 am
#27 Papoose: Then I guess you must be the poose.
5 Nov 2009, 11:44 am
#24 VyfSlot:
Rudi Mathee played craven week against those players, because he played for EP alongside his former Leopards teammate Ligtoring Landman.

#4 David: david according to what i know is an agreement was reached between the sharks and the cheetahs , thus the movement you see
its said brussow will join the sharks after the super 14
thus wessels will return after super 14 duty with the sharks
skipper is however a 2 year deal

Ratel in black and white. What a glorious thought. The honey badger cometh.
