Beast cleared for Boks
7 Nov 2009
Tendai ‘Beast’ Mtawarira will tour with the Springboks after talks between the South African Rugby Union and the Sports Ministry cleared up questions around his eligibility.
The Star reported that the Zimbabwe-born Mtawarira was in danger of missing the year-end tour if the Sports Ministry weren’t satisfied with the reasons that a foreign national had been selected for the Springboks.
The Sharks player debuted for the Springboks in 2008, after completing his three-year residency and has since established himself at loosehead prop. He is likely to start against France and Ireland.
Saru was alerted to clauses in the National Sport & Recreation Amendment Act, 2007, which needed to be completed Mtawarira’s place in the end-of-year tour squad could be confirmed.
‘We are delighted with the news after discovering this problem during the week,’ said Saru president Oregan Hoskins. ‘The government has been very helpful in expediting the completion of the necessary protocols and we’re all relieved that Beast will be available for selection for the Springboks against France in Toulouse on Friday.’

Why does this goverment of ours not leave sport to the sport people, stop stealing our money and start running this country like a country should be run? When they need to get involved in sport, for example trying to sort out our joke of a soccer team, they are not to be heard, Instead they try and f#*k up the only truly successful sporting code currently in this country.

How does some uneducated fat-cat, tax-dodging, benefits raping, BMW 7-series pilfering struggle veteran get to make a call on a player’s eligibility?
7 Nov 2009, 13:48 pm
#8 groenie: No you can’t
7 Nov 2009, 13:54 pm
So would this turn Beast into a non-POC player, or an honorary black ala’ rasool’s bestowment onto Luke Watson?
or does it just make him a neutral player with a fulfilled residency, and picked on merit?
7 Nov 2009, 13:55 pm
are these morons aware tht the boks have 3 upcoming tests ??? do they know the team needs a loosehead ?, did they see te abysmal perfomance from jannie du plessis and guthro yesterday????and yet they want to question the beats eligibility

7 Nov 2009, 13:56 pm
luckily we have a REAL South AFrican in Guthro Steenkamp ready to replace this cultural impersonator…
7 Nov 2009, 13:58 pm
What’s the problem. Is he legally in the country. Does he fulfill the IRB requirements for representing a chosen country? If the answer is yes then surely there’s no problem.

#13 ali: I guess Sephaka lands tomorrow morning.
7 Nov 2009, 13:59 pm
guys it’s a short article devoid of any details about what aspect of his eligibility they are investigating. so can we perhaps keep the racist comments to a minimum until we know exactly what is going on…and even then try restrain yourself for the sake a decency. just an idea, use it, don’t use it.

Yip
South Africa has got such great rugby players from all race and colour.
I really cant take this political **** any more. I live in Europe and follow all the going ons via the net, If South African rugby was left to day what is best for the sport and selecting players and coaches to win games, we would be unbeatable. The Kiwi and Ozzie mates I have hear are so glad we have this quota system, the think it is the best thing to happen to SA rugby, the only way they can beat us!
7 Nov 2009, 14:03 pm
Bwaaaaaaaaaa hahahaha. This is wind up chaps. Erm…. surely?
7 Nov 2009, 14:07 pm
#15 katman: Time for the recall of the mighty Eddie Andrews!
Though to be fair, we was a very decent loosehead, and only struggled when Jake moved him to tighthead. History repeating itself anyone?
7 Nov 2009, 14:14 pm
#17 groenie: I agree with you. We really are handicapped compared to the rest of the rugby playing nations and all this because of politicians wanting to stick their noses where its not wanted. How i long for the days where we could just select those who are good enough. In the bad old days we had a saying ‘No normal sport in an abnormal society”. I guess we could alter that to ” No normal sport with an abnormal goverment”.
7 Nov 2009, 14:36 pm
Poor Beast. Maybe if he was Mugabe’s grandson he’d be made Captain of the Bok team.
Maybe Malema wants to play in the front row. Maybe Malema should play in the front row
I know a few guys who’d like to scrum the little dirtbag.
7 Nov 2009, 14:50 pm
Why are we worried, we have Guthro!
Muhahahahahahahahahahahaha
7 Nov 2009, 14:53 pm
well like i told everyone yesterday, this was a clause that was in the amendment of the Sport Act that Stofile & his ministry snuck into parliament last year in december when every other sport administrator in the country @ CSA, SARU, SAFA had gone off for christmas vac. In the bill they had some of the most draconian proposals i’ve have ever heard of.
- any foreign player that wants to play for a south african national team must first be in possession of a south african passport! Hence the IRB & ICC’s three year residency prerequisite is nullified.
- any sporting federation that wants to draft a foreign player must apply to the Minister of Sport & prove that there aren’t any south african citizens that can play the same position in the whole country.
- in the case that they have proved that there are no saffa, a fee must be paid to the Sports Ministry – development fund -, the fee to be determined by the Minister.
Hoskins, Gerald Majola & Raymond Hack promptly got together to plan an appeal & accused Stofile of sneaking the Bill into parliament.
I don’t know what came of their appeal, but i guess if Stof & them are brazen enough to contest Beast’s eligibilty then they must’ve had some parts of the bill ratified to law!
Crazy if you ask me.

No racial incidents within the Bok camp… A whole bunch of players of colour selected for the Bok touring squad… No white player being picked above a “superior” black player…
These politicians are just looking for something to create controversy about. They’re scared we’re going to forget who wields the “real” power in SA rugby.
7 Nov 2009, 15:22 pm
unbelievable
ANC, African National Corruption, want to destroy the BOK team
Beast is essential to us
7 Nov 2009, 15:25 pm
How long is it until a SA Sports Minister says that this incident is an obvious case of racism and that they checked his papers before they left ?
7 Nov 2009, 15:28 pm
If Beast is ineligible then doesnt that reverse the decision in the Lions 1st Test and all thereafter ?
7 Nov 2009, 15:34 pm
well I really do not care for the Beast anymore, especially after what Buys did to him just a few weeks ago … making Beasty soil his pants brown.
This whole Beast saga makes no better than those poachi ngkiwis.

7 Nov 2009, 15:50 pm
Beast is a Saffa end of story he’s doing A LOT more than any ANC fat cat to bring people together in this stupid country.
7 Nov 2009, 15:57 pm
#23 Transformation:
Those parts of the were subsequently dropped, if I remember correctly and never became law. It was the Sports Ammendment Bill, which put rugby under the auspices of SAFCOC and away from Radebe and the parliamentry sports commission.
The drafting of foreign players was put in to slow down the import of foreign soccer players.
7 Nov 2009, 16:09 pm
#33 David: i’m very much aware of the football aspect of the bill.
7 Nov 2009, 16:11 pm
Typical incompetent, illiterate fools from the government try to ruin everything! Retards
7 Nov 2009, 16:13 pm
there was a segment on the SABC News last night on this story. apparently, the Beast has been traveling with a Zim passport. and apparently thats where the problem started, getting a visa with his Zim passport. the

I wonder which of the Cheetahs management tipped them off?
7 Nov 2009, 17:30 pm
The sad thing about this is that things are becoming more and more like a police state….and worst of all, the sporting governing bodies are becoming more and more submissive.
What they are doing is illegal, but nobody would want to challenge it in the High Court probably for fear of their lives.
We’ve had one of our best years in rugby, which hasn’t gone down well with the government. A great advert for SA as sport is the one aspect to make your country known for the right reasons.
This really needs to stop.
7 Nov 2009, 18:28 pm
xenophobic and racist ANC…that’s all. They did nothing do stop the killings and they will burn down all that’s still good and working in SA untill we are just like the rest of africa…a dark black bloody hole

So to recap…. a murderous Zimbabwean tyrant will have the full support of the SA govt, but a Zimbabwean who plays by the rules and fulfills every requirement is to victimised with mysterious “questions about his eligibility”.
Questions about his eligibilty?????????? In a country where a man who believes having a shower is protection against AIDS can become president, there are no standards anymore. Do these chimps really believe there is anyone outside of Africa who does not see them as stooges of the lowest order? The sports administrators in SA have turned our soccer and athletics into the laughing stock of the world. Why stop there?
Have your say
