Improved Proteas down Zim
11 Nov 2009
The Proteas produced an impressive display with bat and ball to beat Zimbabwe by 212 runs at Centurion.
After an average performance in the first ODI, head coach Mickey Arthur demanded a stronger showing in the second match. This time, the Proteas didn’t disappoint.
Jacques Kallis returned to the team and opened with skipper Graeme Smith. The pair gave the Proteas a solid start as they hit a 108-run partnership before Smith was stumped after a good spin delivery by Prosper Utseya.
AB de Villiers fell cheaply, but JP Duminy came to the wicket and scored his maiden international ton.
Duminy, along with Mark Boucher who fired a quick 31 off 22 balls at the tail, steered the Proteas to a formidable total of 331-5.
The South African bowlers then ripped through the Zimbabwean batting order as the visitors were bowled out for 119.
Captain Tatenda Taibu provided the only resistance with 52 runs. Charl Langeveldt, Albie Morkel and Roelof van der Merwe got three wickets each, while Lonwabo Tsotsobe grabbed one.
South Africa 331-5 (50 overs)
JP Duminy 111*, Jacques Kallis 81, Prosper Utseya 2/53.
Zimbabwe 119 (34.3 overs)
Tatenda Taibu 52, S Matsikenyeri 13, Albie Morkel 3/33.
South Africa win by 212 runs

Very impressive showing.
Terrific knocks from Kallis and JP. Superb.
11 Nov 2009, 11:39 am
Poor Zimbuggered. They aren’t exactly real competition are they…
11 Nov 2009, 11:40 am
Am glad Kallis is opening, has all the ability and technique to do and opens up an extra place for a bowler or batter by getting rid of Gibbs who unfortunately is way past his sell by date..
11 Nov 2009, 12:39 pm
Alviro Petersen shouldnt be in the team. Hashim deserves the spot more, he has a better all round game they must just try to fit him in.
Alternatively play two spinners and move everyone up the order
i.e
1 Smith
2 Kallis
3 de Villiers
4 Duminy
5 Boucher
6 Morkel
7 McLaren
8 van der Merwe
9 Botha
10 Steyn
11 Langeveldt
Tsotsobe unlucky to miss out.

81 from 105 balls = S/R 77.14 against Zim

Oh please, he’s just getting back into form…
11 Nov 2009, 12:44 pm
duminy will become the greatest and that is a fact!
11 Nov 2009, 12:46 pm

He’s pretty darn good at the moment! But it’s true he is a superstar in the making
11 Nov 2009, 12:49 pm
#1 WP_: Kallis is doing well to opening the 20/20. Duminy was superb in Australia last Dec so was Smith and AB.
Cant wait for England to come. Going to be a great series.
11 Nov 2009, 12:50 pm
#9 Puma: opening = open.
11 Nov 2009, 12:50 pm
wp,the idiot bloogger, here on keo must be really pissed off that duminy is the wrong colour as he has no choice but to include him in his teams because he would look rather silly if he doesn’t as duminy is regarded by greats of the game as the next superstar of cricket.mcclaren haven’t done anything yet to deserve a permanent spot in the south african team and will have to make way for parnell in any case
11 Nov 2009, 12:55 pm
Puma
Yeah I agree, Kallis is looking great at the top of the order. Was very good there in the Champs League for Bangalore too! Cant wait for the Series v the Poms. Should be fantastic!
Valkyrie
What is your problem? You just made up rubbish!
11 Nov 2009, 12:57 pm
#12 WP_: Ignore him. He is now blogging under another nick. Actually is banned here. Just a troll and comes here to stir.
11 Nov 2009, 12:58 pm
#12 WP_: Now back to the subject. Yip, looking forward to the series with England. Going to be great. Hope it is as good as last year when we played in Oz. Only thing no more up at 2am to watch the tests. This year back to normal time
11 Nov 2009, 13:01 pm
#13 Puma: i have never blogged under another nick so don’t believe everything you are spoonfed ‘moangat’ but you can believe it if you like.in any case you are a sad excuse for a human being and it doesn’t bother me at all what you think of me.
11 Nov 2009, 13:03 pm
Puma.
Yeah thanks mate, he’s just looking to cause here. We dont need that.
I know it was only Zim but at Albie Morkel found some form in his bowling. He was looking really good.
Also it’s great to have Langes back in the line up. Best swing bowler in the country and very effective at the death too.
11 Nov 2009, 13:04 pm
#12 WP_: what is rubbish?,that duminy will become the greatest saff player or that mcclaren needs to prove himself and that he in any case will make way for parnell who has proven himself in the one day arena?
11 Nov 2009, 13:05 pm
Building some good depth plus side is picked on merit! We just need to groom some tough buggers to take over the old toppies in the test team
11 Nov 2009, 13:06 pm
#16 WP_: Always rated Langes. Pleased he is back. Good to see Albie Morkel bowling well again. Then he needs to do that against England. They have some good batsmen in their side. Well Strauss was superb in the ashes.
11 Nov 2009, 13:08 pm
Haha ya Puma I actually quite enjoyed waking up early then. Maybe it was better because we were dominating!
This should be a wonderful series, I’m most looking forward to the tests, but the the One dayers and T20′s will be a nice warm up for that.
11 Nov 2009, 13:11 pm
#18 Lions_Soutie: How you see us doing against England in the Tests? If the weather plays out (thunderstorms that time of year in the highveld) we should get the 5 days in all the tests. Think we have a good test/odi and 20/20 side now. Should beat England but they did play well in the Ashes.
11 Nov 2009, 13:12 pm
Puma
Unfortunately Strauss is in good form, annoying bugger that! And KP is fit again. Trott is in good form too.
Valkyrie
Parnell is injured and will only be fit in a week or two. Who better than an all rounder like McLaren who has been very good domestically and been in the National plans for a long time to replace him?
11 Nov 2009, 13:13 pm
#20 WP_: First time I got up at that time….hehe. Was so tired after the tests were done. Was worth it though. Pity you never blogged with us then. We had many good laughs here during the early morning blogging and watching the tests.
11 Nov 2009, 13:15 pm
We really should beat England in all three forms but the Tests will be the hardest.
We should who the t20′s and ODI’s quite comfortably, they dont have the best team for that format, despite beating us in the Champions Trophy, but they are best suited to Test cricket.
11 Nov 2009, 13:15 pm
#22 WP_: With those 3 all fit and batting well they have some really good batsmen. I know that Strauss was born in Joburg and KP we all know is a Maritz boy. Think Trott was born here too? Not sure.
11 Nov 2009, 13:18 pm
#22 WP_: i’ve got nothing against mcclaren,in fact i was worried there for a while last year that he might declare for england but i do believe that he has to prove himself over a period of time, just like parnell and duminy, to be considerd an automatic choice.
11 Nov 2009, 13:19 pm
#26 Valkyrie: just like parnell and duminy did before they became regulars.
11 Nov 2009, 13:20 pm
#24 WP_: It is the tests that I enjoy the most. Do enjoy the odi/20/20 games too.
Going to be tough in the tests but think we have the players to beat them.
Now just hope the weather is great. Lots of thunderstorms in the highveld that time of year. Which always seem to ruin a test up there. Then of course Durban has quite a bit of rain in the summer too and humid. So it is tough to play there too.
11 Nov 2009, 13:22 pm
Yeah Trott was indeed born here, he went to school at Rondebosch in Cape Town actually. Saffa boy through and through!
Pity I didnt pop in here at 3 in the morning. Would have been a laugh.
The greatest day of that series was when we were in trouble and trailing in the first innings and then JP along with Harris and then Steyn batted for most of the day. The Aussies were dropping catches, it was great!
JP got his 166, Steyn 76 and Happy 40 odd.
11 Nov 2009, 13:25 pm
Yup I hope the weather stays away so we get some great 5 day contests. I also worry about Durban. It always seems to rain up there when there’s cricket on…
11 Nov 2009, 13:27 pm
#29 WP_: That was probably the greatest test I have seen us win. I watched and thought no we going to lose big time here. Went to sleep for about 3 hours. Thought when I woke up would have seen Oz on about 300 but to my surprise. There was JP and Steyn, Steyn of all batsmen..hehe Still batting. It was a brilliant feeling. We had great laughs here on the blog that morning. A few of us regulars that enjoy the cricket blogged together during the whole tests. Good fun especially that we won.
11 Nov 2009, 13:28 pm
Harry 40 odd is what I was looking for!
11 Nov 2009, 13:28 pm
#30 WP_: Always rains there in the summer and the humidity too not good. Then in Joburg also the thunderstorms can cause havoc. Hope all that stays away.
11 Nov 2009, 13:30 pm
#32 WP_: Yes he did. So see Trott is from the Cape and also a South African. Jeepers that English side have a few South Africans in there hey!!
Going to feel like brothers playing each other
11 Nov 2009, 13:33 pm
Yup that was truly amazing stuff. Had a laugh listening to some of the bemused Aussie commentators!
That series was so special, the first test at Perth was nearly just as good with AB’s brilliant 100 on the final day and JP getting a gutsy 50 on debut to chase 400 odd. Wonderful stuff.
If this one can be anywhere as good it will be one to behold!
Gotta run now. Cheers Puma! Catch up soon mate. Cheers
11 Nov 2009, 13:38 pm
Ya it’ll be ridiculous. About 15 South Africans on the park and only 7 English!
11 Nov 2009, 13:44 pm
#36 WP_: Have to laugh at it. We saffas are everywhere.
11 Nov 2009, 13:50 pm
#21. Puma.
I think we’ll win the series. Just the notorius Wanderers test we have to worry about, we’ve got a terrible record there. Our guys will be as rusty as hell, last played in April!
11 Nov 2009, 13:50 pm
You guys forgot Prior. Born and lived in Jo’burg till about 13 I think.
England did not play that well in the Ashes. The stats back it up. They had 1 century, Oz had 8. 3 of top four wicket takers were from Oz. Poms just won as Oz had 2 woefull session.
11 Nov 2009, 14:01 pm
#38 Lions_Soutie: That is the only thing that worries me. Not game fit. In the Pro/20/odi maybe but not tests.
#39 gecko: There seems to be plenty of saffas in that England side.
11 Nov 2009, 14:11 pm
not to mention coach andy flower…who was born in cape town… also if they had heir way alan donald would have been their bowling coach….
11 Nov 2009, 14:14 pm
There are 4, Strauss (left SA when 6, emigrated to Oz, parents lasted one year then moved to UK), Prior (English mom, left for UK when +/- 13, Pietersen & Trott (SA u/19)). Apart from that, they have Craig Kieswetter (SA u/19) in their performance squad – and he only qualifies for England next year. They have Stephen Moore playing for England A and they have Dawid Malan (born in UK while his dad was playing cricket here, but grew up in WP, playing for WP schools) in their performance squad.
There is one more batsman nearly qualified for England, but his name escapes me now.
11 Nov 2009, 14:16 pm
And you can add Chris Jordan – young fast bowler from West Indies they are grooming to play for England.
11 Nov 2009, 14:19 pm
#42 gecko: Soon the whole 11 will be saffas playing in a England jersey?
Have to have a laugh but we are losing a lot of saffas everywhere not just in sport. Sad really but it will happen even more.
Watch eventually Oz will have as many saffas in their rugby team. Think they will start to scout here from our schools. Get them over there while still young. Really cant see how they will fill another franchise in the S14. They just don’t have enough players.
11 Nov 2009, 14:23 pm
There are rumours that Jacques Rudolph will be picked for the Poms as soon as he qualifies in about a year I think.
Hope he doesnt take them up on it.
11 Nov 2009, 14:23 pm
#41 gunther: andy flower moved to zim when he was like 1 month old so u can hardly say he has any ties to south african cricket, besides…his own country are the one’s that need his help bad by the look of things!
11 Nov 2009, 14:30 pm
Ja not sure what is going on with Rudolph. He score heavily, and he qualifies next year. Can’t really blame him with his first two test selection (India non-test game) and Oz (Ontong affair). If England picks him, I hope he averages 1.5.
11 Nov 2009, 14:41 pm
Ya he’s been in great form over there and now here for the Titans in the MTN40 has Rudolph.
He did get messed around here but hopefully he’ll get another chance for the Proteas. I know that’s complicated with his Kolpak deal.
It would be very sad to see him playing for England however after his 30 odd tests for us.
11 Nov 2009, 14:46 pm
The Kolpak rulings have changed, and nearly all the players lost their contract. The one expection – Rudolph. Allows him to stay, and then qualify.
11 Nov 2009, 15:05 pm
#46 flanka:
chill tiger we were talking about players with souh african connections…
