Boks lose No 1 ranking
16 Nov 2009
The Springboks have slipped to second on the IRB rankings after their defeat to France last Friday.
After the weekend results, the All Blacks have jumped the Boks into first place with their victory against 12th-placed Italy at the San Siro. Other climbers include France and England, who are now fourth and sixth respectively after their wins last weekend.
These movements see Ireland (fifth) and Argentina (seventh) fall one place each.
Scotland have also moved into ninth position, while Fiji drop to 10th.
IRB Rankings:
1 New Zealand 90.52
2 South Africa 89.97
3 Australia 85.63
4 France 83.20
5 Ireland 83.20
6 England 81.07
7 Argentina 80.49
8 Wales 80.39
9 Scotland 76.06
10 Fiji 75.69

I must admit, I don’t get the maths where a loss to a 4th place vs a win against a nobody, suddenly shifts 2-3 points for the 1st and 2nd place holders.
But, congrats ABs.
16 Nov 2009, 15:33 pm
Its all irrelevant until the EYOT-Fat Lady of tours has sung.
Altho its an indicator of how close it was to begin with. France should surely be no1 on form, altho the ABs beat them last time out and Frances win the previous week in NZ was against a team without McCaw or Carter.
Until Boks have played Ire and NZ played France, then it remains neck’n'neck.

What a load of hogwash.
We dominate the Kiwis all year and then lose to one of the best teams in the world.
The Kiwis beat upstarts and jump us.

So if we thrash the Ityes this weekend will we go back to #1?
Methinks not!

#3 YoMama:
ABs, without McCaw & DC, beat France in their most recent match.
Boks played ABs without DC in 2 home matches. The ABs have only lost once, by a slim margin, with DC.
Boks didnt France. Nor the time before, nor the time before that.
So youre saying France are now no1 ?
16 Nov 2009, 15:46 pm
#4 YoMama: I doubt it. They use different calculations when SA are concerned.
16 Nov 2009, 15:49 pm
#5 WakaNathan: ABs also lost to France. Does it matter who played and who not?
Boks played without Spies and Juan this weekend. Does that also count then?
16 Nov 2009, 15:57 pm
#6 Bouts: Calculation method is explained here
irb.com/rankings/explain/index.html
In a nutshell, it’s not about the place in the table team occupies, it’s about rating points they have.
That means, any team with better rating will not get any points, if rating point difference between it and the losing opponent exceeds 10 (if game is played at home) or 15 (if game is played away).
So SA will not get any points, if they beat Italy, because SA have 89+ points, while Italy 71+. New Zealand, too, did not get anything from their win in Italy.
SA will leapfrog NZ, however, if they win in Italy and NZ do not win in England.
If SA lose in Italy, they still will remain 2nd, thanks to huge gap between them and Australia. But that gap will become very narrow then.

Eish ! so quickly moving off the first spot. Be worried , be very worried.

Eish! So if the Boks beat Ireland and Italy, they won’t reclaim first place?
And what’s the plan for the Boks next year? I just up on John Smit’s interview with the Mercury (UK), and he intimated that the core Bok players will be rested a lot more next year. So the Boks may have another 2006 in store? I doubt it though… But it’s gonna be tough for the Boks to reclaim the number one spot if the core players will not play as much… But I’m not worried, the Boks will defend the World Cup in two years time!
16 Nov 2009, 16:42 pm
It’s fine. We’ll get it back when NZ loses to the Frogs in two weeks.
No sweat. No problem.
16 Nov 2009, 17:15 pm
So sad, too bad.
If you wanna play like ****, you’re gonna get a crappy rating
16 Nov 2009, 17:31 pm

oh, says who, Monobrow ?
#7 Bouts:
fair enough, forget that.
ABs beat France in their most recent Test at home, as well as the last Test in France.
Boks lost to France in their most recent Test both home and away.
Tables/Rankings are supposed to indicate form over time. Thats why the tables have turned.
16 Nov 2009, 20:04 pm
#21 WakaNathan: dude you played a two match series with them, we played one game! most recent test my @ss, they beat you at home too…why do i even bother..
16 Nov 2009, 20:36 pm
#22 Transformation:
Please tell me which stat above at 21 is incorrect ?
The Boks have been avoiding France since Jake White realised he couldnt beat them (he won 1 match, at home, in 4 Tests vs France).
The Blacks accept and invite the French challenge – The ABs have played France 5 times from 2007 (for 3 victories, incl RWC 07).
The Boks ? well this was the 1st Test vs France in the same period. 0-1.
Still hurtin huh ?

According to supersport.com the latest world rankings are:
1 SOUTH AFRICA 91.69
2 NEW ZEALAND 90.52
3 AUSTRALIA 85.56
4 IRELAND 83.27
5 FRANCE 81.48
6 ARGENTINA 81.29
7 WALES 80.38
8 ENGLAND 80.27
9 FIJI 76.52
10 SCOTLAND 75.23
It seems someone’s talking sh*t again!
16 Nov 2009, 20:43 pm
Does this mean that old Moaner Henry’s ‘master’ plan of not peaking between the world cups and avoiding the perennial choke has backfired?

#24 U.R. Soles: No, we’ve lost it somehow. Amazing.
16 Nov 2009, 20:55 pm
Oh well, at least our record against the best team in the world this year is 3-0. Obviously BI tour counts for nought. recent form my arse. NZ lost 2 times at home this season!
16 Nov 2009, 21:12 pm
#26 WakaNathan: Yeah! Like this one!
16 Nov 2009, 21:13 pm
I actually prefer No 2; but they must just win the 3N every year and the World Cup every 4 years.
Use End of Year tours to build depth.
Im not to worried about losing to those crazy French, an arrogant ref. They could not even ensure that our anthem was done properly.
It seems like with white guys and sprinting, black guys dont go with rugby. Or is that harsh?
16 Nov 2009, 21:16 pm
#30 Sheriff: Definitley harsh!!
16 Nov 2009, 21:17 pm
#24 U.R. Soles: Hey soles boy! From my S14 experience I daresay that SupertJorts are lagging as per usual, and needs updating…..
16 Nov 2009, 21:18 pm
It is laughable tho that one 7-point defeat can so radically change the permutations….we beat them Kiwis 3-0 this year after all!

Im not advocating hate speech.
As a person that enjoys reggae music Im disgusted that that freak can come and mess up our anthem like that.

#28 Ratel Brussow (MSIUR):
but ABs werent poor enough to lose to Australia (or Leicester C).
The only other opponent ABs lost to were France. As has SA.
Thats the difference.
The 3rd Lions Test also means that Boks have lost to 3 different opponents in 2009, altho I dont think the Lions Series counted for ranking pts.
16 Nov 2009, 23:04 pm
#24 U.R. Soles: It’s a week old rating before SA loss in France (see IRB archives). Update it.
16 Nov 2009, 23:05 pm
#42 WakaNathan:
waka, wind your neck in for crying in a bucket.
all blacks were whitewashed by the might boks in 2009…live with it.
16 Nov 2009, 23:10 pm
#33 Jacques Snyman Website Design: If dropping from 1st to 2nd is “so radically”, what is not?
SA lost to France who lagged way behind in rating points (followinf mediocre 6N season), therefore SA lost plenty of points. If NZ lose (or even draw) in England, they will los huge amount of points and SA will be back on top, of course, if they beat Italy. If not, they will plummet down.
That’s the beauty of rating points. The higher rating, the more effort needed to say afloat.
16 Nov 2009, 23:12 pm
#44 charo: Sure, ABs were dominated by the Boks, no problems with that. And France showed once again why they are better than Boks in the last decade. Life is not just linear.
16 Nov 2009, 23:16 pm
while we bok supporters may ***** and moan about the “unfairness” of the irb rankings, over the last few seasons the ab’s have definitely been the most consistent team.
however, being rwc champs, tri n champs and s14 champs has a special ring to it.
oh, and 7′s champs as well – sorry paul treu
16 Nov 2009, 23:35 pm
the rankings are a joke.we won 5 out of6 tri-nations games and in the process humiliate the sheep shaggers 3 nil and we still went into the eoy internationals less than 1point ahead of the sheep shaggers..what a joke.if the shaggers had that record heading into the november internationals they would have at least been 5points ahead of us.seems it is one math calculation for the boks and another for the shaggers
16 Nov 2009, 23:44 pm
All these complaints about losing the top spot when everyone is subject to the same rules and calculations is pretty foolish.
17 Nov 2009, 00:03 am
#44 charo:
but the Ques was WHY the Boks were longer no1 ?
Which theyre not.
Live with it.
#48 Valkyrie:
Dont forget the Rankings in 09 started where the 2008 left off which means the TriN Wooden Spoon ’08 points to inconsistency at the Boks core. Further illustrated by the loss to Aus in Perth
btw – you seem to have a preoccupation with shagging. Are you that chap I see on the bus in the morning dressed as Austin Powers ?
