Saffas abroad

Keo.co.za looks at the South Africans who performed in European club action over the past weekend.

Saracens, with their array of South Africans in Schalk Brits, Wikus van Heerden, Ernst Joubert, Derick Hougaard, Brad Barritt, Ethienne Reynecke, and Mouritz Botha, secured their spot on top of the Premiership with a 22-6 win over Wasps. All of Sarries’ points came from Brits (try) and Hougaard’s boot.

Marco Wentzel and Scott Mathie couldn’t stop a second half surge as Leeds lost to Sale. Gcobani Bobo helped Newcastle to a shock win over London Irish as he came on as a substitute for the final half hour.

Former Bulls enforcer lock Juandre Kruger sparked Northampton’s comeback win over Harlequins as he scored early in the second half after they had trailed 11-3. Jake Boer started on the flank for Gloucester in their shock win over Leicester, while Bath’s trio of Luke Watson, Pieter Dixon, and Michael Claassens played in their dour draw with Worcester.

In the Top 14, Frans Steyn continued to show Bok coach Peter de Villiers what he’s missing when Steyn slotted a customary long-range penalty in Racing Metro’s 20-18 win over neighbours Stade Francais. Steyn started at centre, while fellow former Bok Jacques Cronje played at No 8. Noel Oelschig started for Stade.

Eduard Coetzee and Trevor Hall started in Biarritz’s pack in their 16-13 win over Clermont, who had Willie Wepener at No 2. Joe van Niekerk and Ross Skeate also gave dominant showings up front as Toulon defeated Brive, who had backs Scott Spedding and Ronnie Cooke, and flanker Antonie Claassen.

Daan Human and Shaun Sowerby‘s Toulouse struggled without many internationals as they went down 30-10 to joint log-leaders Castres, who had former Cheetahs loose forward Darren Nell on their bench. Sam Gerber got his name on the scoreboard as Bayonne easily accounted for Montauban.

Skeato – go you good thing! Heard Lievremont’s been sniffing around re ‘eligibility’ and that Wilkinson’s mentioned him to Martin Johnson as well. That’s the rumour in France anyway!

Personally think that Bekker is lazy – to me he doesn’t appear to have a good rugby brain. Prefer my players slightly more cerebral.

Bekker lazy – the guys all over the place. Never mind your players maybe you should get a bit more cerebral.

Bekker ha been showing the potential to be better then Victor. His taller, faster and has shown to have brain to steal opposition lineouts.

What Keo IT dude took away the shortcut on the side of each post so we can comment on each others comments or is it just a mistake?

Bekker is all over the place except where he’s needed – shoving in the scrum and clearing out in the loose. But, without a doubt, he has potential. But we could do with Kruger and a few of the others back (Rawlinson even).
